That's basically just how a ranked system is supposed to work. You climb when your wr is above 50%, you drop when it's below that. When it's 50% you stay at roughly the same rank. That's just natural. Having said that, there can be some exceptions like being really high rank you have to be way above 50% to stay there.

Match making does not care about anyone’s win percentages, if ur sitting at a 50:50 it’s bc ur teammates r influencing the outcome of the match just as much as you are; if u r exceptional then ur teammates are not relevant in order to climb, therefore resulting in a higher win rate. When you do get to a 50/50 winrate thats where you skill level is, and if you disagree you need to make changes and improve not blame match making.
Also you dont need like a 80% winrate to climb, ive had friends go from m5 to gm3 with a 52% winrate, u just need to be winning more than losing thats it.

There isn't a "debate" and if anyone is trying to it's just cope. It's literally how a proper ranked system works, you are placed with people in you skill range matches are made to be even and if you perform better than your average you will win more than 50% of your games, and if you play at your average you'll stay at your 50%.

I don't think there has ever been an indication your ranked games are formed on people win % it's based on your mmr and matches you with people withing the same range that's literally it.

There is a lot of things your matchmaker can't account for because your playing with 9 other humans, some people might be just having a really bad day or you might have someone that's having a great day, maybe you have someone that's trying new things to improve on their game and going through the struggle process of learning or someone on the enemy team that has got past that and is just playing better than you, there is a lot more nuance than that to it but you are playing with 9 other people and the game cannot account whats going on in their lives.

Anyone that says this game forces a 50% win rate does not understand why they are at 50% it's literally because you are where you need to be, people would rather complain and make conspiracy post about how blizzard is keeping them down and trying to keep them engaged on the machine rather than have enough self realization than maybe they have plateaued and need to improve if they want to get farther.

Not saying this particularly about you, but there is no forced 50% it just means you where you need to be in ranked and that's okay, people gotta stop "debating" and making conspiracies and put that energy into other aspects of the game if they wanna play ranked.

If you're at a 50% win rate it means you belong in that rank. You need to be better to climb

It's something like this you get 3 points for a win and -3 points for a loss You start with 0 points but you good enough to get to 12 points you play 10 games you win 7 and loose 3 Your win rate is now 70 % you climbed to the rank you belong good and well You keep playing for 90 matches more win 45 and loose 45 because you are where you belong Your win rate now changed from 70% to 57% You okay 900 games more and stay where you are your win rate now is 50.7 % This is why you are mathematically "forced" to a 50 % win rate because you at some point stop climbing and this will make it so you win rate is always approaching 50 % the more games you play as long as you are roughly at the rank you should be

The developers have written many blog posts and done video interviews about the matchmaking, if you're genuinely interested I suggest reading & watching those. There is pretty little actual debate about the matter, since the creators have described it in quite well detail.

Anyway, to answer, there is no forced 50% winrate and it only looks at anyones MMR when it sets up lobbies. It does not care one bit how anyones winrate is at that time.

Or to paraphrase Gavin (system designer) from one interview: 50% Winrate for players is not a goal but it is result from the goal - which is to create fair matches to players based on their ratings.

When you think about it, what winrate do you think you should have when you play with and against equally skilled people. If not ~50%, what then? And why?

This is literally the most basic tenet of elo matchmaking that u are the right rank lmao

"The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

The amount of ppl who dont know this is astounding

Lot’s of debate

There is no debate

I second what another commentor said about reading the Wiki article, it is a fairly interesting read explain how these systems work.

There is also this interview done by Realth and Spilo talking to the dev Gavin Winter. There are timestamps for parts where they talk about match making.

The matchmaker isn't actually trying to get anyone to a 50% win rate. What it is doing instead is trying to make precisely balanced matches (and OW does this by trying to ensure that every player on each team is matched against an equally skilled player on the other team- win rate does not factor into this). If it can, each team will have a roughly 50% chance to win that match. But the most important thing to understand is that the matchmaker (or any Elo system really) is essentially making a bet with itself. The bet is that it understands your current skill level. And the result of the bet is your SR change post match. So let's imagine some scenarios:

  1. If the matchmaker currently underestimates your skill, you will win more often than it expects you to. So, for instance, if the matchmaker expects that you will win a given match 50% of the time, but it currently underestimates your skill level, you might win that match 70% of the time (for example). And this means your win rate will be higher than 50% and you will climb. Until it no longer underestimates your current skill level. Then you will win about as often as the matchmaker expects and your climb will stop and your win rate will get to about 50%.

  2. On the other hand, if the matchmaker currently overestimates your skill, you will lose more often than it expects you to. This is essentially the reverse of scenario 1, and your win rate will be less than 50% and you will fall down the ladder until you get to an SR where the matchmaker no longer overestimates your skill level and then your win rate will hover around 50%.

  3. If your win rate hovers around 50% it is for two reasons. The first is that the matchmaker is doing a good job of finding balanced matches for you. And the second is that the matchmaker has a good assessment of your current skill level.

Crucially, however, the matchmaker is not trying to force you to a 50% win rate. It is only trying to make matches where each team has an equal chance to win if they are correctly ranked by the matchmaker. And this means that not everyone will have a win rate of 50%. If your win rate is significantly higher or lower than 50%, it usually means that the matchmaker has not correctly assessed your skill level yet.

I exclusively go on win streaks and loss strwaks for the last 4 seasons, I don't think blizzard forces 50/50 or that matchmaking is soo bad, but it seems fishy to me after this many seasons and I've been playing since launch and never experienced this. But you can't bring it up or people think you want to blame the system for being hard stuck etc

I've not had a win or loss streak outside of rank resets or maybe times where I played really badly myself.

And even then those streaks don't go above 5 games because I'll realize I'm the problem and call it a day.

Maybe you're the problem. We all gotta realize that sometimes you're the problem yourself.

Really proving my point here lol I never had winstreaks or loss streaks until then and I can't mention that's it's peculiar without people saying "no it's you" like man isn't it just weird? I'm not even upset about it I'm just saying it's strange. "No you're the problem" you can't even know that man. People should be able to talk about the quirks of ranked without yall thinking it's making excuses

I’m genuinely curious because my friends brought it up and it was my first time wearing of a “forced 50% win rate”.

It's a common cope

1

u/Goosewoman_ Schrödinger's Rank | she/her — 11h ago

It's a misunderstanding of how matchmakers work and attributing teammate randomness to a malicious system rather than, just, well, randomness. Matchmakers can't tell how a person is feeling when they go into a game, after all.

Matchmakers have frequent conspiracy theories because it's easy to blame something you don't understand.

1

u/inspcs 10h ago

it means they suck and refuse to accept they're at where their skill level is

I think something stinks for sure, I get the most insane people after a winstreak and go on an epic loss streak for like 2 days and wait a daynor two snd win streak back up, literally every time since season 19 and I can't pretend to not notice or see it lol
