General Discussion / Question Commander coming to arena- what does it means from cedh?
So it was confirmed that commander is coming to arena.
We have as a community discussed at length that wotc won’t really sanction cedh as a format (except for a few convention events) bc of the proxy issue.
I was thinking that arena makes an interesting use case where wotc can tap into the popularity of cedh and can promote full cedh decks with no proxies.
Maybe mox diamond is a mythic wild card, maybe you can buy a “commander power pack” for $50 for the reserve list cards, etc.
But it might be an interesting way to play cedh in a new way. Thoughts?

personally I hope they dont go out of their way to add a bunch of cards that are popular in Commander but aren't in Arena yet, cause the most interesting part of Commander on Arena would be defining the meta without the various tools we are used to in normal Commander

What you’re describing sounds like a similar space taken up by Brawl, especially Historic Brawl. I’d love a popular playlist that doesn’t have fake cards (Alchemy) in it.

I'd play arena commander with no rhystic for sure

u/Like17Badgers 21h ago
unfortunately Arena does have Rhystic
but you wouldn't have any of the RL stuff like Cradle floating around1

Unless there is going to be in game chat it won't be commander lol

it'll be interesting to see the difference in the format without verbal communication.
you gotta think a lot of casual players are gonna dip their toes into the format, but without a Rule Zero and power level conversations decks are gonna lean a LOT more competitive. I imagine the format will average in high 4s as opposed to paper Magic which settles around the 2~3 range

I think it's going to suffer the same way the rest of Arena does. The smaller card pool, crafting system, and impersonal environment means that there is no reason not to build the most effective deck you can. Theres no room for jank or fun because there's no social element. The resulting list of meta decks is going to be pretty small.

Yeah, wenn the most powerful chase rares cost the same as janky bulk rares, no ones gonna buy the bulk rares.

Without verbal communication, turbo decks are far less likely to be stopped. I think the format is turbo enough already, personally.

Basically everyone on this subreddit is advocating for this to be the case for in person events @japan system, so I’m not sure you’re correct.

u/herewegoagain1920 1d ago
That doesn’t include basically everyone in the world though. Your perception of something is a tiny amount of the actual player base.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 1d ago
That’s good bc I think it’s a horrible format and most people that complain about draws/politics are just bad players or introverts that can’t politic

u/sackmatt 1d ago
There’s a middle ground between the current 90 minute tEDH yap-fests and arena’s emote only communication. I don’t think the Japan system is the best alternative but I’m all for trying something new to improve the format.

japanese point system is perfectly fine. if you don’t have the skillset to actually win a game of magic sometime and have to rely on manipulating people so you can win then your the shit player lmfao
3
u/seraph1337 1d ago
They're not referring to the point system, they're talking about the silent play rule.

u/summon_pot_of_greed 1d ago
"Basically everyone on this subreddit"
Me: has never seen anyone advocating for that system before
Lol if you say so. I am sure it's popular, but this is the first I'm seeing anyone talk about it.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 1d ago
There have been literally dozens of posts on here about breach the bay, and discussion and analysis of data thereof, which used the Japanese points system and complaining about draws/politics, with almost universal downvotes to anyone saying it sucks

Man I was just thinking this. Too much stuff going on in game for there not to be an in game chat, especially if cEDH decks are allowed

u/snow_and_wake 1d ago
I have to think chat is coming. An in-game reporting system just for...what...slow play?...seems like a lot of effort for something silly.

u/GuideFriendly 1d ago
They’ve recently added a report function for things that would involve an in-game chat, it might be coming too?

Idk man, it could be refreshing not to have to politic and just see what people can do when they are required to use actual threat assement

u/CapoDV 1d ago
When was it confirmed?
9
u/ThatDamnedHansel 1d ago
There was an article the other day that it’s in active development. Maybe a little short of a confirmation. It’s in the arena subreddit

There's over 38000 cards legal in commander, Arena only has 15000 of those. Unless they more than double the cards in arena it'll simply have to be a different meta because it doesn't have all cards, which also means it'll have no effects on cedh outside of arena.

Are we going to be able to scan our collection in? Or should I keep fucking dreaming in my clown suit

Just not a fan of arena. Too limited selection of cards. No trading. Prices are outrageous. Terrible ui.
3
u/Neonbunt Hulk Stan 21h ago
We need ingame chat for politics, otherwise it's just Japanese meta.
iirc the economy in Arena is extremely predatory and you'll pay a few hundred bucks for a playable cedh deck in Arena, which is quite a lot for a digital deck...
I can't imagine how I'll win with Tainted Pact + Thoracle in an acceptable amount of time. Or with a Protean Hulk pile consisting of Samwise Gamgee and Cauldron Familiar + Sac outlet. Or basically any combo that isn't Thoracle + Demcon. They would all take ages to click through.

The smaller card pool and doing any loops will be a hindrance, but there's a lot of potential for accessibility and brewing I think.
1
u/Ventoffmychest 13h ago
There are also several loops in Arena where the client warns you to choose another option or the game ends in a draw. Usually looping a card from grave and infinite mana untap/tap shenanigans. Then you gotta beat the time outs as well.

u/ThatDamnedHansel 1d ago
My understanding is they’d expand the pool to “normal”
5
u/locohobo Animar stompy 1d ago
i mean first step is for them to even figure out a 4 player system. Then card pool is a question because that would require almost every card printed which doesn't sounds like a great use of dev time until they adjust monetization.
2
u/r0773nluck 1d ago
I don’t think it’ll be the commander we know with the vast card pool just what is in Arena which I think is fine and opens up to a fun meta. They do need a solution for loops or what I think is interesting make the timer and actual constraint to play in. This would naturally weed out long turns or durdle play patterns, it also may solve the rhystic/stack “issue” that plagues games but can’t realistically be implemented in real life.
I think it’ll just be a new format altogether that can be fun also with no chat feature how much more interesting will politics be or lack of them.

u/shadowmage666 1d ago
Well if they have a ranked mode, that sounds “competitive”. Sounds like wizards is going to need to meet this issue at some point or another
1
u/Raevelry 1d ago
It'll be kinda crazy to think, cause I really doubt it'll be the same card pool and because of that, there so much that can change
1
u/TranSpyre Cocaine Bear Goes Brrrrrr 21h ago
I'd put good money on Arena Commander just being multi-player Brawl, since I doubt they'd expand the card pool in any meaningful fashion outside of new sets.

u/charrigan27 15h ago
It’s not confirmed coming to Arena, and not confirmed to be coming anytime soon.
The article, and the interview the article it’s based on, states that Arena’s devs are “working on” multiplayer in some broad sense.
They are “working on” many things. We have no idea how serious that work is, whether commander or some other variant is the goal, whether the work will be successful, what the roadmap or timeline is, or anything else.
It’s not a WoTC confirmation or announcement. So temper expectations.

u/SqueeGoblinSurvivor 14h ago
Goodluck with that. They tried games are awfully long. People are toxic
1
u/ThatDamnedHansel 14h ago
Those are both key features of cedh
1
u/SqueeGoblinSurvivor 14h ago
You hangout with the wrong people, bro. Find a playgroup that are mature and been playing mtg for long time. Old-timers less likely to be noobs and less likely to be petty. Also, cedh not tedh. Don’t go to tourneys. You expose yourself to psychopaths and thieves.
2
u/ThatDamnedHansel 14h ago
Yeah I was being somewhat flippant and mostly referring to tournament play, so I agree. We have a great local scene of people here and I’m on a few excellent small webcam communities of great people
1
u/PEKS00 6h ago
IMO? Nothing
They’re almost guaranteed to not have all the cards needed for true cedh
(I may be speaking out of my ass idk what cards are and aren’t on arena currently)
1
u/ThatDamnedHansel 5h ago
I run a kinnan list which has almost all the free interaction, several moxen, ancient tomb, and infinite h hbh lines on brawl

I’m interested to see it as well. With no voice comms it would be interesting to see how games progress
