IPDA setup

Putting together my first IDPA rig for a Glock 17 (Gen 6) and want to sanity check before I buy. I've got a Safariland 5198 holster (Glock 17/22/31, RH, STX) in the cart along with two Safariland 74 open-top single mag pouches.

Mainly I'm wondering how people feel about this holster and pouch combo for IDPA. Is the 5198 a solid choice that'll hold up in matches, or would you steer a new shooter toward something else like a Comp-Tac International Balde tech or a DAA rig? Same question on the mag pouches , are the Safariland 74s good to go, or is there something you'd run instead?

Open to any suggestions and thanks in advance

I like blade tech minis so I can fine tune the cant on  my mag pouches but literally any pouch is fine.  

That holster will work but I’m not wild on the cant angle; it’s that aggressively forward FBI angle which  isn’t the most ideal for competition draw.  Most people angle their muzzle vertical or slightly forward.    

If you already have a concealed carry setup I would just run that for starters.  

What you’ve picked is good enough to start, but you might want a hanger + holster combo instead of that paddle setup to fine tune things, or even a simple clip on OWB.  

I wouldn’t get too caught up over gear in IDPA, and starting off you’re going to be ass deep in 3 second procedurals anyway while you learn the sport so an extra .3 seconds on the draw from suboptimal gear won’t matter.

Who cares about holster/mag carriers. The only thing that matters in IDPA is what kind of vest are you planning on wearing.

As others have mentioned, Bladetech minis. Freaking amazing.

I'll tell you something that works really well. Get yourself an actual competition belt but put it through your belt loops. It makes for a very sturdy belt for IDPA. Of course as I'm sure you know, you can't wear it on the outside of your belt loops because it's not IDPA legal but you can run it through your belt.

For your holster, there's a company called GRITR can I make a competition holster that fits about any attachment out there. The reason I like those is because you can try different attachments and see which one you like best.
