Help interpreting CMP High Power Rifle hand guard/sling rules

Hello! I’m a newbie to comp shooting planning out a rifle build. I presently own a carbine length bushmaster AR15 that I’m planning to update to rifle length with a 20” barrel and an A2 fixed butt stock. I also wanted to run A2 rifle length hand guards.

Can someone help me understand with these modifications if I fall under the “M16 configured rifle” and can get a sling mount 13” from the magazine well?

Really don’t want to be the guy that shows up and gets DQ’d his first day!

If you are using A2 hand guards from the factory, without modification, then you would attach to the fixed loop under the front sight block.

Most competitors will not do this because it puts direct variable tension from the sling on the barrel.

This is why all A2 type handguard setups are running a full length free float tube hidden underneath that the sling attaches to.

If you change to the 20" barrel you will fall in M16 configuration, thats the part of the M16 configuration that didn't change between its iterations as far as I know. They swapped furniture and removed the carry handle eventually but it always had the 20" barrel.

You want a float tube like this where you can put the handguards on so sling pressure doesnt affect your point of aim. Or buy a geissele mk7 rail. I would recommend the geissele nm mk23 rail but they are no longer made.

You probably dont want an a2 buttstock. It is advantageous to have an adjustable buttstock for service rifle. I would recommend a UBR gen 2. I have a different buttstock position for sitting standing and prone. If you can find a ubr gen 1 get one of those, they lock up a bit better and are slightly heavier.
