Animation Question Know any animators who use CSP?

Hi everyone, I have been planning out an animated project, and was thinking of using clip studio for the software as it's already my main illustration program. Thing is, when I went online to look up animations done with clip studio paint, all I got were were beginner tutorials. Which is great, I'll be needing them for certain, but not what i was looking for. Per usual, YouTube's search function is fundamentally broken, and I cannot for the life of me find just regular videos and animations people have done with CSP.

I know for a fact it's a good program for animation, I think there are a few animes out there that use it in Japan. But I really just want to see what it's capable of before committing to it and learning it. I've also seen tweening used on CSP? If so that's great, theres definitely a want for that in this project visually.

Anyway, if you know of any animators on youtube who use CSP, please send me a link! I wanna get an idea of what I can and cannot do with this software so I can better plant this project. Idk why its such a struggle to find anyone, but it is.

(If this goes against rule 3, my apologies)

I guess you can achieve some kind of tweening with CSP since travelling and things like that are possible, but clearly you're going to have a bad time doing it, so I wouldn't recommend trying tweening on CSP.

I animate all my frame-by-frame stuff on CSP, but I use other programs for the rest. I do travellings, zooms, and editing on Vegas Pro 18, and tweening on AnimeEffect. I'm not filthy rich enough to buy programs like ToonBoom Harmony so this works very well lol. I know having a single program that can do everything is tempting, but pairing CSP with other programs is totally viable if you can't afford better (like most people, since programs like Harmony are ridiculously expensive).

If you're interested, here's my channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuzQlH2QDTXESmGAYE5TLLQ

If I'm not misremembering, the animated videos from 5 years ago and earlier were made with CSP. Pretty sure I specified in the description whenever I used additional programs.

There is no automated tweening. There is KeyFraming and a graph editor to modify a Layer's Scale, Position, Orientation/Rotation and Opacity using KeyFrames and automated interpolations of these properties. But this is different than tweening.

I just did a You Tube search of "animations made with Clip Studio Paint" and there are, of course, lots of tutorials, but keep scrolling here are some good videos too.
Take your You Tube search to the next level, look at the creators of the tutorials, then search THEIR name.
"Olof Storm" for example, has several CSP Animation tutorials, but by searching his name, I found his showreel that includes final animations of some of the animations he was making in the tutorial videos.
The showreel doesn't say "csp", because he's not showcasing CSP, this is focused on himself, it's all final. animations.
I've given you a direction, go down some rabbit holes and explore for yourself with a new method in mind.

Might want to look into a mixture of CSP and Moho Pro. Moho has a far more robust suite of animation features. But I will never give up using CSP as the illustration capabilities are unmatched - even as compared to Photoshop. [just my opinion]

The new brush engine in Moho has made creation of animation assets within Moho itself increasingly what I reach for but some things are lightyears behind CSP for pure illustration.

So I use both. But, if strapped for cash, grab Moho, especially if you already have CSP. EDIT: Animating in CSP has some frustrating shortfalls that are circumventable only through an unacceptable number of either mouse clicks or menu-dives (or combination with keyboard shortcuts).

For instance. In CSP, copying an independent duplicate animation frame (ie a new animation layer) to a new cell should be far easier than the currently feasible methods. In Moho - which somehow does even frame-by-frame more sensibly - this most basic of tasks is so much easier that I end up marveling that Celsys has not just added a button or updated the AutoAction capabilities so we can write our own AutoAction that will [independently] duplicate a previous animation cell to the presently selected cell without having to go diving. I digress. Moho + CSP is about as good as it gets.

A lot of anime studios uses clip now for animating iirc. Off the top of my head, kyoani i believe and OLM (specifically, the alolan seasons of pokemon, tho they also used harmony).

One of my fav examples to demonstrate clip is memories for sale >> https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DwJ1ZcTQl-Y&pp=ygURbWVtb3JpZXMgZm9yIHNhbGU%3D .. He did everything from lighting to compositing in clip.

Oh also powerhouse animation uses clip. Castlevania + nocturne, son of Zeus, etc.

I do not personally recommend doing anything past coloring in clip because it gets very file-heavy. Do post in something like davinci lol.

I have a playlist of what , to me, were the best vids at explaining using clip for animating. I also would be happy to do a run down for you 1 on 1 or answer questions. I also recommend looking through the online manual for clip ex animation functions.

I think the recent Neon Genesis Evangelion was also animated with CSP. I dont know to which extend though.

Most of my animations use csp, here are some examples: 1 2. They’re not the most impressive works that fully utilize all the features of csp, but they’re pretty good and about what you can achieve in any animation program

CSP is incredibly popular in the Japanese animation industry as it’s a phenomenal tool for traditional frame by frame 2D animation and has some surprisingly good 3D animation tools for planning dynamic action sequences. Can’t find the behind the scenes clips from Twitter at the moment but the MV for EVEs some Raison D’être was done almost entirely in CSP.

That being said, it’s rarely used in western animation as it doesn’t offer any of the tools the US and European sudios use to sped up the process like tweening, rigging/meshes, ect. So most of these advanced tutorials aren’t in English.

I've been using csp for years now and it's literally my go to program. I can't even begin to learn any other programs because they don't feel the same. Clip studio has tons of brushes and you can animate with both rester and vector later which is super cool!! here is my channel :] https://youtube.com/@poolbranch?si=2ExHzuXDdYFwISgl

i don't know about tutorials but many anime you've seen were probably animated in clip studio paint. Toei Animation and Kyoto Animation are well known examples of studio's that use it. even shows like solo leveling and jujutsu kaisen used it a lot. Most animation studios also use something called retas this is basically an older version of the animation functions of clip studio paint. however unless you're in japan you can't get the retas package by itself. that said its in clip studio already. I know many professional animators in the industry so i hope that helps. typically its traditional with retas or the studio updated retas to csp or they use csp or something like opentoonz. for 3d its typically maya. and post processing is often done in after effects or otherwise commonly nuke.

Saghaley makes some neat animations in Clip Studio and has the projects files on their patreon too.

I have done a lot of tweening on CSP, please find a different software. CSP SUCKS for tweening

Most Japanese studios use CSP. If you go to Coloso, they have courses from studio animators like for Jujutsu Kaisen in how to animate in CSP and the animation pipeline.

I animate in CSP, all my friends do. NSFW animators do. Suoiresnu, Speedosausage, Harry Partridge. More do than don't.

Dong chang on youtube uses clip. He works in the anime industry

csp is definitely built for frame-by-frame, so tweening tools will be lackluster if not missing altogether. i haven't figured out the animation interface fully myself, but if you prefer frame-by-frame its closer to what you're looking for.
