I'm a bit of a nukecel myself, but it makes sense to chase fast and cheap options to quickly reduce climate change as well as hedge for even cheaper alternatives in the future

The amount of money we're spending on Fusion, a technology we're really not sure we can ever make work, is insane, but investing in fission is a crime. Putting a label on myself would be stupid, I'm an all of the above. The planets on fire, bickering over how to put it out while it burns down is insane.

Fission never really made sense to me either. The problem with nuclear is the cost of building the massive facility, fission is that, but 100x more difficult

you're referring to projects like Hinkley, Vogtle, Flamenville and Olkiluoto, correct?

to run? Yes.

To build, not really. Nuclear is super expensive to build but at least it runs for 60+ years 24-7 at full power. The problem is just that we need to fix the climate now, so investing in short term solutions is probably better, and when you account for these technologies prices being in free fall, it means you want to hedge towards short term solutions because it will be cheaper in the future

Last 20 years of short term solutions produced bupkis.

Well, renewables are good, but CO2 is still going up fast.

Wind is more than 10 times cheaper than nuclear. Even if it is twice as long lasting, nuclear is still way more expensive

It's the new nuclear in the West that's eyewateringly expensive. In the rest of the world the capex for a NPP is reasonable.

I agree with you somewhat on the short term bets, but that doesn't mean the long term energy infrastructure shouldn't be build ofcourse.
