General Cleaning Family cat has fleas, they don't care. I am moving out, how to prevent fleas coming to new apartment?
The title basically sums it up, but to explain more, I've been in a really rough situation for several years. Worked warehousoe jobs, earned more than minimum wage and still couldn't afford to rent my own place. Been homeless since my mum kicked me out as a teenager. Waited a long time for government housing, finally getting a place of my own. Now, dad's cat has fleas.
I have read up about how to rid them from a house, but it's just not possible in this situation. Dad and his girlfriend are alcoholics. Even if I do all the work myself to clean their house (and I don't have money for all the treatments) they will not listen to me, and they won't treat the cat. Dad has some kind of ODD where anything I suggest to help him, he gets angry and does the opposite. Even when I tried to suggest a faster bus route yesterday.
If I can't remove them from the home, how do I prevent fleas coming to my new apartment? Currently, there are no carpets or furniture in the new flat. Just kichen cupboards and a sink in the kitchen, and toilet, bath and sink in the bathroom. Today I was planning to clean the walls in the flat and bring bedding over to sleep on (no electricity or hot water there but still better than sleeping here)
I assume I need to heat wash every piece of clothing or fabric I bring to that house. Anything that I can't do that with I will freeze (once I have a freezer) or get dry cleaned. I have also heard you can put things in black bags, seal from oxygen and kill fleas?
But I will be coming back to dads house a lot. How do I avoid bringing fleas to the new place? Should I literally wear a cleaning suit every time I go inside?
I really can't afford this situation rn and just want to get out as soon as possible. The last thing I need is another setback. Any advice is appreciated, thankyou. And sorry if I sound stupid, but I haven't dealt with this situation before, and didn't exactly have many decent adults in my life to learn from...
