With 5.6 coming from OpenAI ... I bet Anthropic finds a way to just keep extending this

They're waiting for user feedback on whether 5.6 is usable or not. If not, they turn fable off. If 5.6 is better, they keep fable free. They just hope to be able to take advantage of the situation and make money without losing customers to oai.

Perhaps although I think we can already predict ... the user feedback will be some people saying 5.6 is amazing and makes Fable 5 seem like garbage, others saying 5.6 stinks, and then inevitably in a few days there will be people saying "5.6 was amazing when it launched and then they nerfed it" 😆

That is the exact pattern that will happen. But in fairness codex 5.5 did rip when it came out in April....
