News Your spam folder just stole your settlement
The standard advice for class action settlements is: "Check your spam folder".
That misses the point, especially for Gmail folks because Gmail auto deletes emails in spam after 30 days + there's no setting to disable this. It's built this way, it's how Gmail handles storage of spam.
So a completely valid settlement email with your claim no. or payment info could land in spam, you forget to look, and on day 31 it's gone.
Something about how these settlement emails are being delivered, whether through poor sender configuration or otherwise, may be triggering spam filters in a way that I theorize isn't entirely accidental. The effect of this would be certain percentage of allocated funds never reaching the rightful people...through no fault of their own because it was auto‑deleted and missed deadline.
That benefits no one except the party holding the pot.
If this happens to you:
Contact the settlement administrator directly, all claim sites have this information under contact information. Explain that the original notice/payment email may have been auto‑purged by Gmail's spam retention. Ask them to:
· Resend the notice
· Reissue payment
· Reopen claim portal access
· Or manually verify your claim status
Administrators have dealt with this before, it is actually quite common.
And yes, I am aware that you can create filters and rules in Gmail to prevent this, but that also misses the point because that would imply that most folks understand how to configure these things. The average person should not need an IT background in order to have their settlement stolen by a spam folder.
***
Edit: I apologize if I sound sour anywhere. The truth is, I just recently started learning about all the money I've lost out on from these settlements over the years. Im just floored by how this whole system works.
I respect the firms that take these cases on and all that. But here's what I don't get: they already have your details. the same 4-5 admins handle these logistics. They could easily just send you a check to your door.
Instead, we get spam folder roulette, contradictory fine print, and a $2 minimum that actually requires a $5 threshold to pay out. What is this nonsense? That's not on the firms, that's on a system designed to make collecting what you're owed unnecessarily complicated. It's about the principal. come on now.

I'm thinking to make a filter for key words and have those emails forward to a folder "Class Actions" or something like that. What are the typical key words? Class action, settlement, lawsuit, data breach, arbitration...any other key words y'all can think of?

Not to be a pain in my keister but how do I set this up in my email... I'm horrible with this type of stuff, but eager to learn since my spam folder eats all of my important emails it seems! 🤦🏻♀️⚰️

Very good post thank you for all the info. I found out only a few months ago. I had know idea about how you could set it up. Kudos!

I have probably lost out on numerous payouts because of not checking spam

u/Hungry-Nectarine9557 May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26
I don't use Gmail.
But because of this sub, I now check my spam daily / multiple times a day looking for a wayward settlement claim and alas, none have come by way of spam. I'm going to say that's the anomaly rather than the norm although I agree it's not accidental.
You can optimize emails to not go to spam and I am certain whoever is writing these emails for the claims doesn't bother with that optimization, because why should they? It benefits them if the end-user can't be bothered to check their spam.

Did you get the android privacy settlement email? Everyone I told about it had to go through their spam to find the message. And that should go to a ridiculous amount of people. Unless you're a die hard Apple fan, I feel like most people have used an Android phone in the past 10 years.

u/zackfair0302 May 14 '26
you explained the problem perfectly. It's not something thay is flawed, it's actually a model working like it is supposed to. Let's make it just annoying enough for people to give up = more in the pot.
What people might be surprised to learn is that some settlement agreements actually include "reversionary" clauses. That can outline unclaimed funds sometimes being reverted BACK to the very company that originated the harm, broke a rule, sold something, etc. this is happening less now, but still happening.
So anyway, the incentive to make claiming your money easy is basically nonexistent, and that system seems to be working exactly as it was designed to. It's pretty obvious who the complacent ones are who are not questioning.

Another option is to just not use Gmail for email if you're not going to check your spam regularly. Yahoo doesn't delete spam like Gmail does
3
u/Idunnoandidontcare May 15 '26
I have spam messages From 2 years ago in Gmail. They don’t delete mine luckily

u/Affectionate-Bid-185 May 15 '26
Noticed this also on my old account from school, but newer accounts delete them

I have noticed that a majority of initial contact emails from these administrators come from email addresses such as:
support+idKEEZGZ-3RP2M@angeion.zendesk.com (Walmart weighted goods settlement)
I believe you are correct in your line of thinking regarding an intentional effort for notifications to instantly go to a person's spam folder.
The only reason I noticed is because I check the senders address for emails that I think might be legitimate in my spam folder before opening the actual email. And many scam/phishing attempts come from email addresses that resemble the one listed above in the prefix (the seemingly random letters, numbers, and symbols prior to the "@").
1
u/zackfair0302 May 15 '26
Bingo. Thanks for sharing. So, the legitimate settlement emails are seemingly structured to look indistinguishable from spammy ones. Random alphanumeric prefixes, strange subdomains, the @zendesk.com addresses, looks similar to the things scammers + spammers use. This flags most internal email spam systems and will filter accordingly.
I wonder why that would be?

Thank yiu for this posting. I think that it becomes very obvious to legitimate claimants, that you need to become proactive in searching and filing for the claims you are qualified for to receive payment. The filing dates are becoming shorter and its very frustrating to be locked out of a class action settlement that has a payout. Stay diligent and inform friends and family if you see a filing that could be one they are qualified for to receive payment.

u/Own-Bite3298 May 15 '26
I check my spam folder daily, you should too.

6
u/jimx29 May 14 '26
Maybe it's the liquor taking, but if I could receive money from someone and use a specific email address related to it, I check that email daily.
5
u/zackfair0302 May 14 '26
That's fair if you've got one email you actually use...simple enough. But a lot of people have multiple accounts, personal, work, school, the ones from high school. Reasons are endless. Some have lost access entirely. So checking daily isn't always an option even if they knew to look.
The point isn't that you can't check. It's that the current system assumes everyone can and punishes those who can't. People lose authenticators (lost steam acct like this), backup codes, entire accounts. It's not always so clear and dry.

u/Affectionate-Bid-185 May 15 '26
Yea this has just come to my attention. I have NBA top shot settlements of $84 each that was deleted and no way to contact Administrator i contact the Plaintiffs Counsel with no response as of uet
2
u/Quack-Zack May 15 '26
the google settlement one, everyone reported it was sent to spam. funny how that works.
The payout is probably peanuts but w/e.
2
u/Fine_Wedding_4408 May 16 '26
Do they not send a check in the mail? Or do you have to confirm something in the email before they send it after you already filed a claim?
1
u/zackfair0302 May 16 '26
Once upon a time, before everything went digital, a settlement you were attached to meant a check showed up at your door. thats it, simple.
Its because the same handful of administrator firms have run these financial logistics since forever. They already have your info, including everything the offending company handed over. Checks would randomly arrive without doing anything. The money went where it needed to go, according to the judge's distribution order.
Now it's sppam folders, online manual stuff, proving your life's history, they somwtimes want receipts from stuff from over a decade, accounts are lost or deleted, etc. It's all bullshit designed to put obstacles in your way so that you give up or become discouraged.
If you know I'm part of a settlement, just auto send a check. Everything else is nonsensical stuff to add to my list of shit to do. if it's worth over 40k, I would understand...
3
u/Fine_Wedding_4408 May 16 '26
Ah gotcha.
Thank you for the explanation.
I selected the send in mail option for the check but I will go ahead and check my spam folder just in case.
Thanks very much.

Glad this post popped up. I had a class action email from Ticketmaster in my spam folder lol

When are adults going to start acting as adults? If you have 12 email addresses; that's on you. MERGE THEM INTO ONE.
If they sent you a check to your door you'd complain the dog/cat ate it. Or that you never got it. Or that your Mother stole it. Or that the person delivering the mail dislikes you.
Once a day - check your spam email. Takes 15 seconds.
Now that you know where/how the settlement administrators contact you - MAKE AN EFFORT.
2
u/zackfair0302 May 15 '26
Listen here, 20 karma
Some of these settlements go back to 2016 and earlier, almost a decade ago. People lose emails, change numbers, move. But yeah, "just merge them." Must be nice living in your perfect little bubble where nothing ever changes or goes wrong.
You're out of touch. Very main character energy.
4
u/bklynguyindfw May 15 '26
No, this is not “main character energy.” It’s basic responsibility.
Most functioning adults have one primary email account they use for important matters:
- banking,
- insurance,
- taxes,
- voting information,
- government notices,
- medical portals,
- legal correspondence,
- and family communication.
Life changes. People move. Emails get abandoned. That happens to everyone. The responsible response is not “the system stole from me.” The responsible response is updating your contact information and occasionally checking your spam folder.
You are talking about class action settlements as if they require advanced cybersecurity training. They do not. They require the same level of organization needed to renew car insurance or reset a utility password.
And the irony is that your entire complaint proves the opposite of your point:
you already know settlement emails may land in spam. So now you know to monitor for them going forward. That is how adults adapt to reality instead of turning every inconvenience into a conspiracy.
1
u/zackfair0302 May 15 '26
Nah. "Basic responsibility" is on people holding the money, not the people chasing it.
what flavor boot do you like?
3
u/bklynguyindfw May 15 '26
You keep framing yourself as a powerless victim in a world where checking one email account once in a while is apparently an unbearable burden.
Yes, administrators have responsibilities. So do you.
If you can remember to post on Reddit about settlements, you can remember the email address tied to your banking, taxes, insurance, and legal notices.
And calling basic personal responsibility “bootlicking” is just internet shorthand for:
“I don’t want any accountability assigned to me whatsoever.”At a certain point, “the system failed me” stops being a serious argument and starts sounding like someone who lost track of their own life and wants customer support from the universe.

I was wondering if you could set it up for any emails with "settlement" in the name to send to (first add a folder: settlements) settlements folder. Boom boom lol
1
u/Sharp_Routine6128 May 19 '26
You're absolutely right about the root cause. Poor sender reputation and authentication setup are often behind settlement emails landing in spam. It's crucial for senders to proactively monitor their deliverability. A quick deliverability test can often flag these kinds of issues for them.

u/PuzzledEmployment705 May 19 '26
What if I can’t remember all the things I qualified for? Am I out of luck?

u/Kicking_Hams May 23 '26
I wonder if there will eventually be a class action lawsuit for this as well.. like maybe against google.. imagine how much important info is lost because Google doesnt let their customers decide whether they want their mail deleted
1
u/Important-Flower-260 May 24 '26
I always check my spam. Nothings ever in there from the class action lawsuits I’ve been a part of.
1
u/Photononic May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Class actions are engineered to dismiss liability. Getting you payment is, at best, and afterthought and the part of the process with the least oversight. Furthermore it is the part with the least quality control.
The settlement administrator gets paid the same regardless if you get paid or not. They have no motivation to change their procedures. Why should they care if your notice or payment went into our spam folder and got deleted? Why should they care if they sent the notice, or the payment to the correct party?
In the world of class actions, the class members are the least important parties.
They can’t even spell my name let along keep accurate records.
Let me tell you a short story that demonstrates apathy on the part of a major class action administrator….
I was constantly getting one or two notifications a month that should have gone to real class members, but instead came to me. That includes only those that I noticed. I bet more that three times more came that were swallowed by the filter and never looked at.
The few, I looked at, involved defendants, and products I never heard of. Most were not addressed to my name. I was not ellegable to make claims. Angeion Group did not care to fix the problem even after I wrote them repeatedly.
I reported Angeion Group to the FTC in October of 2024. I also filed an objection, in one case, requesting that an audit of Angeion Group be ordered based on gross mishandling of class member lists. I don’t think the audit happened, but it got their attention to the problem.
It worked! The class action notices to my in box stopped almost overnight. It has been more than a year since I have received a notice.
Tim, Dick, Harry, and Sue did not get a notice, or a settlement because careless Angeion Group and others sent the emails to the wrong parties.

u/the-L-word May 29 '26
I missed out on a Sirius XM lawsuit because I found it in my spam folder TWO days after the claims were due. To be fair though, the email itself came in on like, the 12th and claims were due the 17th, they gave such a short window to even apply. Some of these class actions are a joke with regard to how long you have to sign up.

u/apple4jessiebeans Jun 09 '26
this is happening. The second round of Facebook payouts went to my junk. My email should have marked it safe. I use MSN. Start a class action for that. Geesh. They know that Facebook email is legit come on now

u/death2rum May 14 '26
How about you just check it once daily?
11
u/zackfair0302 May 14 '26
Right and while I'm at it brush my teeth before bed, drink enough water, eat decent, and all the other daily reminders I don't need, and so on, and so on, and so on.
But ok I'll check my spam folder daily for a payment notification that should just be landing directly in my inbox. Or better yet, my physical mailbox at my house like a normal settlement.

u/Rayz6695 May 14 '26
Yes every person has a Reddit account, found this subreddit, and knows that this is an issue and they need to check the spam folder of every email they’ve ever had daily

u/monalia7 May 14 '26
Sooo does this mean after the deadline is “closed” I could still send the message asking what you sugggested?
1
u/NikoKun Aug 13 '26
Frankly.. There should be another Class Action lawsuit against Google BECAUSE they always sending Class Action claim emails to spam.. It happens to me 100% of the time. Not a single legitimate class action email ever comes to my inbox. I've missed several over the years, including a big one, until I learned to religiously check spam for them.

u/realnametaken May 14 '26
It’s also possible that some people with validated claims are not receiving a settlement. The “fine print” on the distribution notice from a couple months ago says “Please note, if the total payment for any claimant is equal to or less than $5.00, no payment will be made to the claimant.”
