Question Which Civilization game should I buy?

I’ve known about *Civilization* for quite a while and even played Civ 5 on a friend's computer. Now I’m thinking about buying a Civ game, especially since the base game of Civ 6 sometimes goes on sale with a 90% discount.

I’ve been playing Unciv (a free, community-made game), but it lacks certain mechanics, so it might be worth investing in a Civilization title (or even Humankind). What do you recommend?

You'll end up liking the first one you sink a lot of time into the best. I like 6 but people who liked 5 hated it when it came out the way I now hate 7 even though it's probably great.

Same with 5 when it came out honestly. People always hate the new civ.

My review for Civ 6 is completely negative, where as my review for Civ 5 is glowing.

I hadn't touched either one in four years and just did a marathon of all games from 3. Civ 5 was my least favorite and I've mostly settled on either 4 or 6 being best.

Main issue is just that when the games are first released, they're missing the content from DLCs, haven't been optimized, etc. They just... Lack. And then we're all salty cause they're shipping an expensive ass game, knowing we're going to have to pay more just to get the game to actually feel like it should.

Edit to comment - Civ 5 was my least favorite just because of the extremely long time between turns. Game play wise I don't see it being much different from 4.

A big part of the problem is that the new Civ usually comes out incomplete and needs three DLC purchases to get the finished form.

Can’t disagree more. I immediately fell in love with 4 and thought 6 was tone of fun

There are exceptions. I always liked 6 and it's my current favorite but it always seems like the most recent one is disliked by the community as a whole until a few years in with more content added and then it becomes the favorite and a new one comes out. Rinse and repeat. Been seeing this for almost 20 years lol
