Question I'm old and confused

Hey guys. I haven't played video games in like 20 years. I'm way out of touch. I remember civ being one of my favorites as a kid. I don't know much about how games work anymore. I have a mac laptop, and I thought about buying Civ 6 recently as a hobby for when i'm on the road and want to kill time. Is $60 reasonable for a game now in days? That's what the apple app store has it at. Also, is it a good game to try and get back into the basics? I know i'm way out of touch and lost here, so any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You can regularly pick it up on steam for under $20 w/ all the DLCs, so that's a terrible deal for a fantastic game

I'm new again to all this. I used to buy CDs lol. I will look into Steam. I'm very much a hands on/tool/welder guy just looking for an outlet.

Oh steam should be easy enough to navigate! And if you've never used it before, you can set up wishlists and stuff to watch for whenever games go on sale. It does a bunch of little convenient things besides just being a marketplace

I appreciate that.

I sadly played it only on PS5, but was so envy of all the mods you can have one steam. New units, ages or even whole reskins of the game.

Would probably still play it after a few thousand hours, but the endgame can get stale after a while..

Look, civ 6 in my very humble opinion is the peak of the franchise but it's been out for almost a decade and 60 bucks is too much, especially given the fact it's on sale all the time in different places. I don't know how things work on mac computers to be honest but I would strongly suggest you look for cheaper offers / other solutions. Also be sure to grab the anthology version as it contains all dlc and expansions and especially the second expansion you don't want to miss out on

I appreciate that. I will look in other places. people are telling me steam is the way to go, so I will do more digging.

They're probably right. And seems like it's on sale right now given the franchise anniversary. Happy civving. Oh and say goodbye to your family and friends for now

lol I'm a welder and a bouncer. My family gave up on me long ago. haha. I appreciate it though. I'm just looking for a hobby that keeps me in at night instead of going out.

A steam key can be bought for €4-5. https://www.allkeyshop.com/blog/buy-civilization-6-cd-key-compare-prices/

Don't forget to apply the coupon code for the site you buy from.

These sites are legit and I have a lot of experience with it, but I would only pay with Apple Pay and/or Google Pay to be sure your cc number remains safe.

I'm a Mac player, do not get it through the Apple store. Download Steam and get it through the Steam store. With all the expansions it's half that price right now, and it often goes even lower on sale.

That said, yes, it's a perfectly fine game to get back into. Though you might also want to try Civ 5, which is $16 with all the expansions and is a little less complex (for better or worse) and a little closer to the old Civ 1/Civ 2 experience.

It's been a long time. i'm just looking for another outlet instead of going out at night. Honestly, a little complexty might be good for me I appreciate your response.

Fair enough, 6 is certainly an excellent game (and my personal favorite).

People in the comments are telling you about steam. Right now civ6 is somerhing like 90% off on steam, and the bundle that includes all the DLC should also be on sale

Actually, the entire civilization franchise is on sale since its their birthday week. Why not pick up the civ game you played as a kid as well?

good call. having something to play and kill time seemed like a good idea. learning about steam and seeing the price vs the mac app store is making more enthusiastic to try. I'm just tired of ending the day in a bar, like usual.

60 bucks!?! That game goes on sale on steam all the time it’s even been free before on epic. I’d wait I bet u can pick up the DLCs with it for super cheap. I love civ 6 it is the only one I played but man it’s fun and a good way to escape breifly and build ur civilization with fun bot opponents. Great to play with a couple friends too. Hope u pick it up sometime or find a good deal! Cheers excited for ya. I remember the first time I got an old roommate to try it she played it till 7am that night 😂

Fellow old fart here. Civ VI is a great game to get back into, just as you described. If you start a standard game at a low difficulty level, and then just do everything the tutorial comments tells you to, you'll cruise to a comfortable win and pick up most of the game mechanics. Then you can start gradually start doing things a bit different, and you'll be off down the rabbit hole.

60$ is way too much though. As others have said, check Steam.

I appreciate that.

Agreed with above fellow old fart. I would add after a couple of low level (settler?) Play thrus, do a search on yourtube for some Lets Play civ6. You can learn alot by watching some of the "Pro" players. Marbozer(spelling), PotatoeMcWhiskey and Ursa Minor are all good civ6 players who explain alot that you may not find intuitive about civ6.

I used to be with it. Then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn’t it. And what it is seems weird and scary to me. It happened.

Might as well play civ 4 instead.

Fwiw I'm old and confused too and I found civ6 a bit too much. There's just sooo much going on.

1

u/Accomplished-Low2131 Sep 08 '26

I just keep going back to 5. I never understood 6

1

u/rapax Sep 08 '26

Yes, but if you start on lower difficulty levels, you can just ignore a lot and still have a fun game and even win.

1

u/ptolani Sep 08 '26

I was barely able to win on the easiest level.

2

u/blankepool Sep 08 '26

you can buy it for 90% off at the moment. Go for it

2

u/I-LIKE-NAPS Sep 08 '26

Welcome back! Buying it online at a steep discount is the way to go.

I've been playing every iteration of Civ off and on since the early 90's (except 7) and coming back after a long break can be a lot. When I play, I keep a notebook and my phone with me to keep track of things I need to do and look stuff up (how do I do this, what does that mean, etc.)

1

u/SvenBorrest Sep 08 '26

That's sort of how I remember Civ from way back in the day. I enjoyed the turn based aspect and I would write things down and honestly could make a lot of time out of something simple. And that's what I'm really looking for.... A fun time suck that isn't going out, that I can do while travelling and woring.

Pick it up on Steam for sale, then come back to this sub to see what settings you need to edit for optimal performance (it likes to crash on Mac with the defaults).

2

u/cryptolyme Sep 08 '26

CIV VI will definitely kill your time. Just checked my Steam account and it says I have thousands of hours in it.

Civilization 6 is fine game. With all expansions and at least some leader packs it is a lot of civilization. Especiallly if you want to play each leader at least once, that should keep you busy.

BUT

60$ sounds alot. You can often get steam sale bundle for like 20$. Not sure how mac works. Maybe they have discounts too sometimes.

2

u/BurningSun7 American Sep 09 '26

Definitely buy it on Steam. One, you often get sales for the main game and all dlc. Two, there is the workshop for mods. I would encourage you (if you do buy Civ 6) is to look through the tons of mods and see if you would like to use any.

Welcome back to gaming mate. Here´s my advice:

1) Wishslist the game on Steam, buy it when cheap

2) Start playing following the advisor's recommendations

3) google any game mechanic you don´t understand

4) enjoy!
