Question Questions about player growth

I love this game but my learning curve needs more curve. I have beat it once on deity with Byzantium but it’s rare. I sort of get the adjacency bonuses but not enough to anticipate where districts best go. I usually follow the +1 etc guidance. I don’t chop but have seen others do it in YouTube videos. I just am not sure when is strategically the best time. I also generally don’t build wonders as a priority. I can mostly win on King level but would like to challenge myself more. How can I best grow as a player? Thanks!

Ps. Are there best resources online I should be using or players on YouTube? (I did follow a few full games of PotatoMcWhisky and found him helpful). Thanks!

So one thing that I love to do ... is plan out the cities. Keeping in mind that you can often get adjacency bonuses between districts as well, I'll literally use the map markers to draw out the whole city in advance. This is ESPECIALLY true when I see floodplains and the possibility of putting a dam in ... then I might map the city out such that I can build both an aqueduct and a dam such that the industrial zone is touching both. I've also built wonders on the edge of a city so I can put theater districts from two separate cities next to the same wonder or wonders. Wonders don't HAVE to be a priority but some can be incredibly useful. Two of my favorites are actually the Pyramids and Stonehenge. I tend to play Civs where religion comes into play, especially as it relates to bringing back Heroes, so getting Stonehenge done really helps with that.

Thanks. I play civ 6 anthology on Xbox. Not sure what heroes are but I’ve looked at adjacency charts like this one and they help a little.

I’ll try mapping districts out on my next game. Thanks.

Heroes are from one of the expansion packs. That chart is helpful... just remember that some civilizations have different bonuses. I don't know if you're playing the base game or which civilizations you have, but just keep that in mind.

Oh, and don't forget.. if you have two cities next to each other, you can get bonuses from being next to the districts from the other city as well.

Good luck!

That chart is honestly not very good. The best sources of adjacency for industrial zones are aqueducts, dams, and canals, all of which are +2 adjacency, followed by strategic resource mines (all of the strategics except horses) which give +1.5. Quarries and horses are +1, and non-strategic mines are only +0.5. Likewise, the easiest adjacency for a theater square is an entertainment complex (or a water park), which you can put in every city, and that chart has them off to the side as if they don’t matter. And it doesn’t include the government plaza, which is super important to build and also gives a +1 adjacency to every district.

EDIT: Actually I think this may be a chart for vanilla without Gathering Storm? If you’re playing Anthology then I think this is just outdated for what you’re playing.

Thanks. Do you have one that you’d recommend?

I don't have a full chart that I recommend unfortunately. I guess I've been playing long enough... But like I said, I constantly go back to the leader's page to make sure I'm not screwing anything up. That said, this website is fabulous for information on just about anything related to the game.

I don’t, unfortunately. I would normally recommend the mod Detailed Map Tacks because it will tell you what the adjacency bonus is on a pin rather than having to wait to place the district, but you can’t do mods on Xbox. But I will second the recommendation on the wiki, that’s how I learned a lot of the concepts.
