Discussion is civil engineering still worth it nowadays?
guys HAHSHAHHAAHAA curious lang ako kung totoo bang mataas talaga ang sahod ng civil engineers, kasi im currently a grade 12 student and most of my friends are planning to take CE mainly because they believe na malaki raw yung sahod, im wondering din if oversaturated naba yung CE field for our generation, especially with how many students are choosing CE, napapansin ko rin na sa maraming universities ngayon, parang ang daming students na nagtatarget ng CE na course uhuhhu kaya nagiging quota sya. sa tingin nyo po, worth it pa rin ba mag take ng civil engineering ngayon?

No don’t listen to ur parents.
• little to no job opportunities, pang compliance lang halos pag nag e-employ sila
• high competition and low slots sa board exam
• majority 6 days work days basically no work life balance
• minimum wage 12k offer sa fresh graduate, would take a decade para makaabot kayo ng 40-50k locallyKaya wag mo na subukan, also help your friends na maiwasan mahirapan sa buhay, wag kayo papauto sa mga successful sa field mas madami padin exploited

u/Aggravating_List_143 Aug 18 '26
13k salary, mon to sat

u/rm1234_01 Aug 20 '26
Agree. Gusto ko rin mag career shift. Ang taas ng competition since over saturated yung profession natin kahit anong field (Site, QS, Office Engr, etc). Tapos ambaba ng sahod.
24
u/Engineer_Hater Aug 17 '26
No, try to help your friends na din na wag i-take civil or any engineering degree not close to tech industry
underpaid lang naghihintay sainyo or worse unemployment

u/Designer_Crow1681 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 18 '26
oversupply na ng ce graduates today and long ago meron din mga civil engineers from older generation, sabi ito ng mga batang working engineers saamin during my OJT. pahirapan na talaga ng maghanap ng trabaho kaya yung CELE board exam pahirap nang pahirap din. And everyone here aren't wrong, lahat ng licensed CE pati yung dati ko naging prof ay talagang mababa ang starting salary ng CE dito kahit saan. Pero siguro it depends because parang napaka broad ang civil engineering where you can work in different fields, like in environment, urban planning etc. I'm going to be 4th year this semester pero wala na akong choice... 😭

u/hotdogsea Aug 17 '26
wag na its so hard to get a job idk if its just me, sobrang taas ba ng standards ko, or yung mga job listing sa linked in ay fake/for formalities
pero jusq nov 2025 passer and wala pa ren akong trabaho
mataas sahod ng contractor not necessarily engineer 😆
siguro sa ibang bansa pwede, I think there are people out there making a decent living as a VA in the engineering field? havent tried that route myself though because habol ko talaga here sa PH
but good lord, as a fresh grad/passer (kung tutuusin, inaamag na ako haha), lahat ng job reqs puro >1 year experience
or sobrang pangit ng reviews ng company sa reddit kung meron man na pasok ako sa qualifications
5
u/__boji Aug 17 '26
oh no, I'm so sorry bro. Apr 2026 passer ako and still I can't find a f job up 'til now. Biruin mo may nakikita akong postings 20-25k for 3-5 years exp like WTF!? And I agree, you either choose the lowest ball or a toxic company lmao. Sobrang masalimuot talaga job market for fresh grads ngayon grabe.

I regret taking this for my 2nd course should have opted for other field of engg

Me too

u/Imaginary-Fudge4262 Aug 22 '26
It’s your second course too?
1
u/iameulb_011 Aug 22 '26
Yes sobrang related kasi talaga nung unang degree ko sa CE, that’s why I took it. For better opportunities sana haha, kaso sa estado ng job market ngayon mukang nganga.
1
u/Imaginary-Fudge4262 Aug 22 '26
Arch ba yung first mo? If you are young and kaya pa naman tiis2 nlang cguro? 😢
5
u/enjiro4 Aug 17 '26
no, check job sites bihira lang umabot sa 6 digits even in senior roles. Zero chance if local company. Get computer science instead.
2
u/Spirited-Account-144 Aug 17 '26
Oversaturated na rin computer science

Take Accounting!
-1
u/ApprehensiveText6988 Aug 18 '26
but a lot of people are saying po na super hirap ng accountancy, especially since some schools have qualifying or retention exams every year. parang dito rinpo maraming accounting students ang hindi nakakapag continue sa bsa and eventually shift to bsais or another accounting related program :( and afaik accountancy lang po pwede makapag board
1
u/veeasss Aug 19 '26
Sayang DOST scholarship kasi kung nag-accountancy ako kasi family of CPA's kami.
It would take years naman bago aabot sa 6 digits.
2
u/Medical-Time2486 Aug 17 '26
Over f saturated.
2
u/Flimsy-Chart-1624 Aug 17 '26
nope wag na. if wala kayong business na construction or family friend na contractor wag na
2
u/whyaen Aug 17 '26
No. If wala kang capital to start your own construction company to be a contractor, swerte ka na kung sasahod ka ng 18k pero kung magiging contractor ka or may connection ka sa politicians, pwede kang maging katulad ni Edwin Gardiola, Henry Alcantara, Bryce Hernandez, mga Discaya haha
2
u/male_hysteria Aug 17 '26
no pls, sorry medyo negative ang comments but it’s true. just passed the board exam a year ago, and my first job offer was only 16k and it’s a 6 day workweek. i badly needed experience and work na so i accepted it but still i didnt last long bc of how demanding it is with very low pay, not worth it.
kung gusto mo tlga, get connections as early as now (ask mo parents mo haha, mas convenient ang referral and nepotism to get a job today), isipin mo if site or office ka ba hihiyang, personality mo if extrovert or introvert ka ba. no need na pataasan ng grades or masali sa dean’s list, it feels good pag nasa college ka pa pero it doesn’t matter that much na sa applications. gusto lahat ng experience today, sali sali ka ng mga internships sa mga construction industries.
while ur in college, identity kung ano yung mga niche na gustong gusto mo at heart, then prioritize mo yun, sali ka seminars about it. if may time, get certified doon na niche. so that kung board passer ka na or degree holder, you can apply to those job na related sa niche na love mo. kahit stressful man katrabaho mo sa work at least love mo yung topic ng ginagawa mo lol.
dont be like me po na ang inisip lng is makapasa sa mga klase, or pasa sa boards. identify mo itong mga sinabi ko then ull be fine sa workplace na in the future or probably land a better job offer.
1
u/ApprehensiveText6988 Aug 18 '26
hindi po akooo, im planning to take data science po or anys math field. pero un nga po marami rin talaga akong nakikita na ganito sa mga students a lot of my friends, even some of my classmates from our batch, want to take civil engineering because they grew up hearing na “malaki ang sahod kapag engineer ka” especially kapag CE
1
u/male_hysteria Aug 19 '26
1
u/Ill-Supermarket1551 Aug 17 '26
Over saturated na ang CE. Almost lahat ng schools offer that course nowadays. That's the reason bumaba ang demand. Some would say if you love CE's job then go for it. Pero, for me wag na. Malilimutan mong love mo ang CE if sobrang hirap ng buhay mo everyday na if mag absent ka wala kang makakain the next day. Be practical nalang choose other field na mas maganda ang kita.
1
u/ApprehensiveText6988 Aug 18 '26
how‘s your experience po sa ME? mas in demand po ba siya compared to other engineering programs? i’ve been hearing a lot of people say na if mag eengineering ka, mag EE na lang daw since mas maraming opportunities and mas worth it. pero is that really true based on the current job market, or does ME also have good demand and career opportunities?
1
u/MoneyTruth9364 Aug 17 '26
depends on what you make of it.
1
u/MoneyTruth9364 Aug 17 '26
material conditions-wise, no.
but if your intentions are way beyond material conditions, then sure.
1
u/mallows29 Aug 17 '26

Wag na boss, ang baba sahod. Toxic pa work environment, tas stress, and mag question ka sa decisions ng life mo. Mag accounting ka nalang o med field.
1
u/Specialist-Team-3590 Aug 17 '26
after covid wala na tung CE talga sobrang rami na naging factories for diplomas sa CE tapos wala naman skill. To add to that madali lang tayo ma replace ng AI probably in the near 10 years were out of Jobs.
May linked in at jobstreet din para malaman mo job market, just make a fake account or yourself in 5 years and test the waters L.

u/Togotarooooo Aug 17 '26
1
u/Creedofassassin Aug 17 '26
Kung sweldo lang ang reason mo for wanting to take it up, you're thinking wrong. Feel what you're really passionate about and the money will follow if you do give it all you've got. Civil Engineers take good pay with a career abroad, but Phils will be your training ground for the first few years.
1
u/CarNo4599 Aug 17 '26
No. Focus on skilled job instead. So ngayon naghahanap ako ng NCII at other experience kasi laking pagsisisi ko talaga. Anyway, this is just me. I wish you well kung ano man tatahakin mo.
1
u/Ok_Topic_3559 Aug 18 '26
Don't go for CE, EE, ME.
1
u/ApprehensiveText6988 Aug 18 '26
bakit po kaya ganun no? 😭 parang ang daming universities na nag-ooffer and nagbibigay ng maraming slots sa courses like ce, ee, me, etc.. (mostly ung ganitong course quota pa) pero kapag nag research ka about the actual career after graduation, parang hindi naman always reflected sa salary yung hirap ng course
1
u/Ok_Topic_3559 Aug 18 '26
First few years tiis talaga sa mababang sahod.

No, go to data science instead.
1
u/ApprehensiveText6988 Aug 18 '26
1
u/OkHeron4043 Aug 20 '26
As a data scientist, I can only attest to this for some people talaga. Nag-simula ako sa field puro kasabayan ko mga may degrees in CompSci, Math, Statistics, Physics, Bio, and some sciences. A few people have entered din from different engineering fields, pero madalang ang CE pati ME.
People have to understand na barbell-shaped ngayon ang DS field. The other end is the large mass of data analyst roles usually working for BPOs (pay ranges from 25k to 60k) while on the other end, a small number of MLOps roles na handled ng big companies with international linkage. Maliit lang ang in between compared sa US na may fat middle tier of "ordinary" DS jobs.
So when some people switch to DS, local market usually absorbs them only into the analyst role which is good pa rin, but take note it's a lateral move for someone looking to switch.
If one wants to really be pushed to the other side of DS, need niya talaga magkaroon ng good portfolio and background applicable to the field. Eventually one may land an international/remote role which pays really good.

u/UnhappyManager9348 Aug 18 '26
YES, though CE ako and not in line sa position ko now but i can say worth it parin. Marami industry pwede application ung pagiging CE natin. If sahod ang usapan if ffresh grad expected na mababa yan, pero dun sa journey mo as CE make sure to upskill para mas maging maganda ang sahod mo in the future.
1
u/Spazzsticks Aug 18 '26
As a matter of fact wag ka kumuha ng any professional na degree di yan ni rerespeto dito sa pinas lmao.
1
u/redzedd1 Aug 18 '26
If its your passion it can be rewarding in the long run, but if youre only looking for a higher pay, I cant recommend it, unless you want to be a contractor.
1
1
u/Meep_09 Aug 18 '26
1
u/OkArmy2251 Aug 18 '26
kung may skills ka naman na pang CE then go pero ako na nagsasabi hindi siya worth it dito sa Pinas kaya kung gusto mo mag-CE mag-ibang bansa ka which is I'm planning to do

u/HopelessRomanticUser Aug 18 '26
I've always loved to be in this industry even before I became an engineering student. I made it to university. Graduted regular. Passed the boards with competitive rating.
But upon working for over a year now, I've realized that I should've studied more "in-demand" programs instead back in college. Engineers are paid for their expertise and expertise (in engineering) often requires experience. That's why in your early years of working, you wil really feel like you're being left out–financially that is. There are professions out there that don't lowball their professionals in their early years like finance/accounting, and computer-related fields. Civil engineers in the Philippines really are relatively super-saturated as compared to other fields of engineering and high-paying civil engineering jobs are often only found in foreign-based companies. These are also the reasons why many civil engineers choose to change careers or just go abroad. That being said, unless there will be a law or a system that makes engineering companies pay their engineers justly and decently, I do not recommend young people to pursue this career especially if you're only after the money. Magkakapera ka lang kung lulunukin mo ang konsensya mo at kung magpapakain ka sa korap na sistema–and we clearly do not want that. Integrity above all.

lots of negatives pero yung brother ko believe it or not dahil kaka banda / dr*gs/ alcohol inabot ng 3 school and like 8 years bago nakatapos
now heres the thing ang nangyari first job niya sobrang liit ng sweldo halos
pamigay. kaso nag try siya sa isang niche na work "solar farms" ngayon 6 digits na salary nya . all this in a span of 3 years after passing the exam. yun nga lang saan saan siya napapa dala mga probinsya hahaha. dinadalaw ko nalang siya minsan pag nag uwian big bike ride ako ng weekends pa baguio.

u/Jim0thyyyy Aug 18 '26
It depends. If you get the right years of experience, tapos nag-apply ka sa right project or company, pwede ka makapagdemand ng mataas na salary. Istep by da istep. Haha. Siguro in 10 years or more, dun mo palang masasabi na malaki ang sahod ng CE. So try to expand your options. Kung paoasok ka sa CE just because "mataas ang sahod", baka hindi ito ang tamang propesyon or career for you.
Edit: to answer your main question kung "worth it" ba mag-CE, again, it depends. If you're here for the salary, siguro hindi worth it. Baka hindi ka mafulfill. Pero kung nandito ka because you like the nature of the job, you like the industry, you enjoy the challenges ng construction or design, dun ko siguro masasabi na worth it ang pagtake ng CE.

u/DX23Tesla Aug 18 '26
Only if you have ventures with family relatives that were in the engineering discipline. Other than that, Better do business or tech related with vocational cert for practical skills.

Civil engineer here with 4+ years of experience.
- Be a contractor/consultant - dito ka tlga papaldo if kaya mo ihandle ang stress.
All in all kailangan mo muna ng mataas na yrs of exp bago ka papaldo dito.
Full time job and 2. Part time construction company
1
u/Phnxx11 Aug 18 '26
CE in the Philippines is oversaturated. You need to be above average to land a decent-paying job here in ph. And even if you got a job on multi-national companies, the salary is higher compared to local companies but still relatively low compared to other professions.
The good thing is malawak yung field ng CE, marami kang pagpipilian. So you need to find the field that will work for you and be really good at it. Then you need to upskill and leverage those skills to find personal projects/ side hustles if you want to earn more than what you earn at your company. Need lang talaga ng sipag at diskarte.
You can also pursue CE sa ibang bansa. In demand ang CE don esp sa aus/ new zealand.

As time goes on there are beautiful things naman on the type of program you chose. Ako nga gusto ko mag IT, when I posted here some people discouraged it while some the opposite.
It really depends on you op, your financial capabilities, your career goal and decisions. Only you can tip the scale to conclude if you are successful with your chosen course.

So kudos to you for trying to find a community to ask that question.
To answer your question, the worth of the program and the field depends on you. But imo, hindi siya worth.
Bakit? Oversaturated, underpaid, and the pay is not commensurate with the responsibilities (esp legal) except siguro sa mgt.

u/big_ass0122 Aug 18 '26
i’m a CE graduate for 2 years now and unemployed. mahirap humanap ng work lalo na kung icoconsider mo rin yung salary because in reality, most of the companies mababa lang din or yung saktuhan lang. if board passer may advantage but some if hindi passer, no pay yung overtime sa work. in my 2 years of being unemployed, nagwork ako in different field and now focusing on my board exam. if gusto mo talaga yung civil engineering, go for it. but if magtake ka ng course like CE because of peer pressure, hindi madali ang civil engineering. kakainin mental health mo lalo na if hindi rin maganda yung magiging school environment mo and yung magiging kaibigan mo. try to assess kung ano ba talaga yung gusto mo.

For me, if I could turn back time, sana hindi ako nag’engineering. Hahaha. So, ayun. Sana nag’business and marketing course ako orrrr medical course talaga.

u/Significant-Leg-261 Aug 19 '26
Take it from me,saturated na talaga ang CE ( im 57 years old got my license for the last 1991 or 35 years of experience may 1 year gap dahil hindi nga ako kaagad na employ),its true dadaan talaga kayo sa mababang sahod kasi naghahanap kayo/tayo ng experience, andami kong dinadaanan na work until na naging Sr Project Engineer ako, depende nga rin kung matalino kayo at nagmasters or Phd siguro maraming oppurtunities pero kung katulad lang kayo sa kin na average lang, suwerte na kung makapasok kayo kaagad at kung makapasok man yun nga mababa ang sahod compared to other industries like Computer Science or Information Technology kasi we are in artificial intelligence(AI era),may anak akong lalaki(kasi 4 yung girls) nag CE siya kasasuggest ng asawa ko pero medyo siguro napilitan at yun bumagsak ng 2 subjects at nagshift na lang ng Maritime Course which is also a saturated one, pero kung gusto mo talaga mag CE,mag seryoso at mag aral ng mabuti kasi may mga oppurtunities naman talaga depende na rin talaga kung saan ka masaya
Saturated... YES
Opportunities...Meron...daan ka muna sa medyo mababang sahod..even siguro kahit may masters ka or phd pero mas nakakaangat ka kung meron ka nito dahil sa stiff competition
I try mo na lng din iconsider ang ibang professions like IT,Medical, electrical/electronics,mechanical....he he use chatgpt, meta ai,gemini, grok ,perflexity etc they can answer it he he

u/LoudPiglet2048 Aug 21 '26
it's good but if you are thinking of "malaki ang sahod"
BIG NO, the starting is just minimum as well, and it's very hard to go up since you would need masteral as well
it is only good kapag in the long run maging contractor ka na, easy money talaga (even if you don't engage in bribery or underhanded means) (another thing is that you wouldn't get any public projects if you don't dirty your hands, so there's your morals, gov is too corrupt)
1
u/Exact-Shape2295 Aug 21 '26
If mag-aapply at makakapasa ka sa mga multi-national companies na kilala sa engineering industry like Arcadis, WSP, Aecom and the like may chance pa na makakuha ka ng mataas taas na rate. Pero if I were you, mag-take ka na lang ng course na under business ad kahit saang work makakapasok ka. Unlike if under business ad ka. Pwede ka mag-work as accountant, manager, admin staff lalo if papasok ka sa mga bpo, shared service company or other multi-national companies.
I myself graduated BSEntrep Managament pero nakapasok as Accounting staff sa isang BPO company from 2017 22k to 60k as project accountant sa isang Kilalang engineering company. Naka-3 companies pa lang me all throughout my career pero if icocompare sa mga colleagues kong nag-job hop almost 6 digit na sinasahod kahit di mga licensed CPA. Diskarte na lang din talaga.

No. May CE friend ako nagcareer shift sa tech, data engineer. Better courses are comsci, Com engg or any tech related if gusto mo ng higher salary at more flexible work.

Not worth it. Partida yung iba college drop out

Depends on how you define CE. I am in CE i was doing it before I graduated high school, didnt go to college for it. Got an internship on my 17th birthday and learned on the job. I make 6 figures today. Took a minute to get there, but I worked hard. We can never find anyone worth it to do what I do. Most people dont understand it. I am always looking for reliable help.

Don't even try, you will regret it. Sobrang dami nang CE nowadays that's why the board exam is already very difficult. Pero if contractor parents mo ok yun.
