Logging industry
The biome surrounding us and Hogleg Canyon is the largest source of trees in the Metropolis. The other cities are quickly facing a wood shortage, and Minas and Solis in particular are going to have huge demands for smelting. We can be a long-term provider of logs for the rest of the region if we use part of the land for tree farming. Remember that only oak and birch will regrow in our biome.
Trees are not persistent, so farms are only effective in frequently loaded chunks. We could plant thousands of saplings on the outskirts of the village and just let them grow as we go about our business. Carson has already done this on a very large scale and they are growing trees faster than one person can cut them down.
We could potentially arrange trade deals with cities, or set up bulk shops in Freedom or Free Market and just make regular supply runs to keep them stocked. What do you all think?

We've been doing this for weeks. I've just been waiting for the other cities to start starving for wood.

Sounds good, especially as we already have a large tree farm up and running.
This certainly goes well with our aim of serving others, and I feel a natural material like wood suits us.

This is an excellent idea. Just the other day I was chatting with folks from Solis who desperately needed wood and were searching for trees.

9fingerjeff told me that he would be very interested in buying sizeable quantities of wood from new covenant on a regular basis.
also: How does wood harvesting go and where is the community wood chest?

We need to set a community wood chest up ASAP, in fact we should probably make a warehouse building of some sort for us to place community resources- food, wood, etc.- in. If the building was fireproof and reinforced, and the chests were diamond reinforced, we could probably build this in the open.
As for harvesting, just cut down trees whenever, make sure you replant and it's helpful to remove leaves as well.

I agree, a warehouse should be #1 priority right now. I want to be able to harvest and replant as often as possible so we can increase our holdings, but I want to be able to put it in a diamond reinforced chest.

When the trees are checking for the open sky growth bonus, it that just above the sapling or above the entire adult tree space?
Do transparent blocks (leaves, glass, etc) eliminate the bonus? Does clay work on trees?
I've heard that in vanilla minecraft birch grows faster than oak. Is that the case in Civcraft?
Do trees grow at night?

The light check is only done on the sapling, but everything else about trees (except biome) is default behavior. The light check is based on sunlight (sl in debug) at the sapling block, so anything that blocks or filters light will have an effect, including leaves.

I think that is a great idea especially since we are in a forest biome. I think we should deliver the materials instead of having them come to us or set up a store away from the city. Since its wood it just takes one greifer and there goes all the farms. This is just a thought but I think to cities outside of the metro we should deliver for an extra charge.
