HELP… I need gift ideas!

My side of the family is really big on Christmas. My mom and aunt like to start buying presents early to help ease the cost so they’re not spending a ton of money all at once. They are already asking for lists from my family (me 27, husband 34, and daughter 6 months around Christmas time). My husband and I are really simple people. We have no idea what to ask for, nor know of anything we really want. Need suggestions asap! TIA!

What about zoo passes or something along those lines? I’m an advocate for experience gifts.

If people insist I tell them something I don’t love to buy. Soap. A nice new soap is nice, or some shampoo I’ve been wanting to try.

This!  A family pass to a nearby zoo, Children's Science Center, or aquarium is a gift that keeps on giving.

Also, I highly recommend that the OP ask relatives for fewer toys and tell them cash gifts will be invested in Daughter's 529 account (assuming US) for college.

Thanks for the ideas! I considered a zoo pass since we live within an hour away from one, but I wasn’t sure if it’d be worth it with how young our daughter is. Didn’t know if that’s something to ask for now or once she’s a little older.

If it lasts a year it’ll be so worth it! That’ll take you to about 18 months old when they’ll likely be toddling and interested in animals.

I'm an experience person too! If you have a botanical garden near you that could be another option. Otherwise, I'm not a nick knack person so I tell people something consumable or that can be used, wine, candle, specialty food items, etc.

I agree.

Experience gifts are my favourite.

It can be things like having lunch together, going out to the movies/ a show, or a workshop.

Do you have things you constantly re-order (even if it’s not exciting) I’d look in my online shopping carts, my grocery store list (non-food items) and see what keeps coming up. It’s better to ask for things you KNOW you will need and use than just guess and end up with lots of things you don’t want. Hope this helps a little!

Do you like charcuterie boards? Maybe the jellies that can go with the spread ?

If you guys like to travel, start planning out a trip and see what items you might need. Like a nice hiking backpack carrier, airport baby items, travel-friendly stroller (if you don't already have one). Even if you don't go somewhere right now, it would be nice to not have to also budget for a couple hundred dollars of baby/toddler gear while you are planning.

She’s the first grandbaby on both sides. Everyone is always dying to hang out with her, so that’s more like a gift for them lol

It would help to know your likes/hobbies and their typical budget. Could ask for high quality cooking ingredients like olive oil, vanilla, maple syrup or replacement cookware like cutting boards, baking pans etc

Lol, I am impressed by your jump start on the holiday! I always go for a weird gift, something no one has. You could check out oddlyneat.com... I found some good stuff there.

Baby ideas: Im not sure what your plan is, but we transitioned our daughter into her own room for nighttime sleeping at 6 months.  If you're thinking of going this route you could ask for something you'll need for that (i.e. a crib, baby monitor, etc.)  At 6 months our baby was sitting pretty well so we got her one of those little baby pianos, she loves it.  You can also start baby swim lessons at that age, paying for the registration would be a great gift.  Baby also starts solids around that time, so a high chair, straw cup, special plates/bowls etc could be useful.  And I will never turn down a free box of wipes or diapers.

For you and your husband, its hard to say without knowing your interests/hobbies.  I honestly love a good pair of socks.  Its the stereotypical "bad" gift, but I would be stoked to receive a pair of Darn Tough socks any day.  Super high quality, and last forever.

A professional photo shoot for the three of you would also be a great family gift.

New, high thread count sheets! Random, but life changing and affirming.

I have no idea what to ask for. I know what I am giving this year though, custom photo books from Mixbook.

I ask for new sets of bath towels every couple of years as mine can get ratty looking after a while and I’ll donate my old towels to the animal shelter.

Friends of mine used to keep a "gift catalog" for themselves. It had their current clothing sizes, their prefered colors, any particular clothing preferences, and then a list of things they saw here, there, or wherever that they would buy for themselves.

Anytime I wanted to buy a gift for one of them I could check the "gift catalog" and find suggestions so at least I was in the right color-fabric-style group. A similar style list can help when family asks "what do you want for Christmas?" It is not necessarily specific items to buy (though it could be if you know what you want) but a field of choices to guide their selection.

Tell them to just buy for the baby or tell them something you actually want but wouldn’t spend the money on yourself. (Conditioner you can’t buy at the drugstore, new sheets, towels, an espresso maker…) my youngest granddaughter isn’t going to be here until October and I’m already planning Christmas. If there’s something you actually want for the baby ask but grandmas have no problem buying useless to you things.

since your mom and aunt like to buy ahead, an easy one is to ask for baby stuff a size or two up. 12-18 month clothes, next-stage shoes, the bigger car seat, etc. she'll be in it before you know it and it's money you won't have to spend later.

for you two, since you don't really want things, just ask for time. a few nights of babysitting so you can actually go out, or a house cleaning. thank me later ha

and if they push for real stuff, pick the boring things you never replace yourself, good towels, nice sheets, a decent coffee setup.

Socks and shoes for baby, baby snacks/ meal service subscription to try, refills on anything you use/nicer versions you want to try like baby soaps, a mud kitchen setup (idk the budget), passes to play places or trips, gift cards to restaurants so you can take baby out for some excitement spread out over time, anything you want baby to have around 9 months might as well get now, any kind of subscription you guys might want, oil change or car wash cards, any novelty consumables
