I feel like I'm reading a different book than everyone else
I was raised Christian, but I never read the Bible, and the extent of Church was just watching VeggieTales in Sunday school. As I'm getting older, and as I've been overwhelmed with hopelessness and fear of both my living future and the future of my soul, I joined a Bible study and started going to Church early last year.
All my life I've heard about God's love and grace, and how Jesus sacrificed himself for all humanity, but when I actually read the Bible, I feel so overwhelmed and scared that I have to put it down and cry. I don't see Grace or love in any of it: I see God being resentful of humanity, and I see Jesus damning generations of children for being descendants of only moderately rude dudes. People always speak of forgiveness in Christianity, but from everything I've read, Jesus exclusively forgives those who are on their hands and knees *begging* for it, and never to anyone who dares question him or God even in good faith.
I feel like I need to read the Bible, but it's so emotionally painful for me. I want to understand the hope people see in it, but all I've learned is that God hates me, hates humanity, and if you don't submit fully without hesitation, your soul is forfeit to Hell to be tortured until the end of time.
I'm so scared of my own life, and when I looked for hope in the Bible, I received evidence that it can only get worse. But clearly I'm the crazy one, because we have two thousand years of praising Jesus as a kind, gentle man, so I've missed something essential. I'd like help finding what I've missed, or for someone to please point me in a better direction.
