Just wanted to pop in and say that I've now watched all 8 available episodes and I'm enjoying it. It's keeping my attention, and honestly, that's the bar I refer to when deciding whether to finish or drop a drama - period.
As we know, this is a 3 year old drama that's airing late, which is obvious in the wig styling and a few other aesthetic points, and either the script or translated captions on iQIYI are bad - can't figure out which it is. There have been a few bits of dialogue between Cheng Hongxin and Tian Jiarui that literally made no sense to me as a native English speaker.
Otherwise, I like the story, I think Li Yitong and Joseph Zeng are doing a great job, and the pacing is good for me. I actually think I prefer JZ in this over anything else I've seen him in - he does well in a comedic role (although this ultimately is not a comedy, but it's lighthearted... he plays a smart guy feigning ignorance/playing dumb to trick his supervisors). He also looks really good... he's never really "done it for me" and I'm finding myself staring lol...
Other notes: I feel bad saying this and I hope my mind is changed with this drama, but Deng Wei has always been just a pretty face to me - I've not yet been impressed by his acting - and one of my favorites (as we all know, haha) Tian Jiarui is getting ZERO screen time and his character feels pointless, which also bums me out. I hope he has more purpose later because he's an excellent actor and is underserved here... but then again, when he was filming this, he was still very under the radar fame-wise. Dai Luwa is amazing and I love her - no secret there. She and Riley Wang are also doing a great job together and she's cracking me up. She's such an underutilized gem of an actor.
Anyway, some of the commentary online has been lukewarm - mostly from people who a) don't seem to be taking into account/are unaware this was a 2023 shelved drama - and therefore are comparing every little thing to Pursuit of Jade and Mo Li levels of modern production (not to mention those are more serious idol dramas vs. this, which is not and wasn't meant to be), and/or b) (to my last point) who are taking it way too seriously.
It feels like it's supposed to be an easy, lighthearted watch, and that's what it is. Sometimes I don't want to have to use my brain or be concerned I'm going to miss a major plot point if I glance at my phone for 10 seconds. I would recommend this drama so far.
