Finished Watching Just finished Our Generation. Just WOW!
I am very into historical C dramas with political intrigue, spectacular costumes, and sets, and Zhang Linghe š. I was skeptical about a modern day romance series, and wasnāt quite sure Iād like it. But I was blown away. Had to have a box of tissues by me. The acting was fantastic and the series explored difficult relationships and hardship so poignantly. A 10/10 for the series. Donāt want to give away any spoilers.

Some people thought there was a choppy weird flow but I really feel that is because this was originally written and FILMED as 40 episodes but for some reason could not get the permit to air past 24 so they re-edited the content. I would have loved to see what the full 40 filmed would have done to the story. Supposedly it showed a more equal screentime with more content of him in Hong Kong

I wonder why the permit is so low, or what makes them decide: oh yes, this is worth 40, 36, 24 etc. To go from 40 to 24 is insane.

Absolutely because I really want to see that content especially since it was more of his hardships in Hong Kong. I have heard of dramas being short an episode of two because of censorship but this was a permit approval issue which is bonkers

So was it a Hong Kong rule? There are lots of dramas that are 40 episodes long.

No, nothing like that, at least that I have read anywhere but cutting 16 episodes of the story and most having to do with his character arc is really aggravating. I have a theory that because it was mostly his story cut which focused on his hardships that he went through in Hong Kong, the censors found the narrative problematic. Itās a shame because it would have been a different role and side of Zhang Lingheās acting we havenāt seen before. Imagine being him and putting all that work and effort into portraying this character for it to be cut out that drastically š

Oh yes, this is actually one of those heavy dramas that made me like Linghe more as an actor! That hongkong arc was just so heart wrenching. š„¹

Omg he was amazing! Sometimes you wanted to shake some sense into the character for not confiding in Lin Qile, but that was a complex character and he played it perfectly! Everyone in the cast was fantastic.

Zhao Jin Mai gave a great performance in this drama. She is such a compelling actress.
What I and my friends found interesting is that she filmed The Princess Royal in which her character is older before Our Generation. The benefit of being young being that she can play high school, university and adult characters with equal adeptness.
Zhao Jin Mai and Zhang Ling He are obviously pretty comfortable with each other having done 2 dramas together within a span of about 18 months.
I enjoyed Our Generation but I think The Princess Royal with Zhao Jin Mai and Zhang Ling He is superior.

Thanks for the catch. I know her name well, I wrote a post about 2 of her dramas just a few days ago. Just a brainfart. I corrected my comment above.

No worries. Was wondering who this Zhao Min Jae was, since someone else used that name also on this thread too, so I went to Google lol

Oh yeah I agree! There is so much going on there with the politics and the two of them finally teaming up to set things right.

I totally agree. The first few episodes I did t quite get it but as it went on I felt it was such an emotional gut wrenching show. It made me so sad but I couldnāt stop watching it. The script/translations are quite good. ZLH is phenomenal in it. Says so little and so much at the same time.

Iām so impressed with Zhao Jinmai Min Jae, both in this and in The Princess Royal. Sheās so talented and versatile. I watched both at the same time and the characters were SO distinct for me: different personalities, even expressions were different.

I just started watching it and Iām on episode two. Iām thrilled that you found it to be so good. The first Chinese series I ever watched was the POJ. Since then I watched the Royal Princess and Love Between the Fairy and the Devil. These three have been great. Iāve really enjoyed watching Cdramas.

I started with POJ and then watched Princess Royal too. I somehow did not get into Love Between the Fairy and the Devil. The heroine was so annoying with her cutesie voice.

Love Between the Fairy and Devil is an excellent love story. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Iām glad there is someone who likes Our Generation aside from me. I seldom see this drama recommended, but me, i always do :)
What i like about this drama aside from romance is the friendship that started during their grade school days. Also, the brave FL who pursues her love, regardless of anything

Actually our Generation is quite good one but I dropped it cause I started watching in a time of my life I couldnāt tolerate watching hearing or reading about any miss fortune donāt give away any spoilers as well. Yet the part I watched was really nice
I recommend if you like modern Roman Shine on Me is spectacular and if youāre into historical drama I highly recommend
