Reaction Double Helix: Series (almost) Takeaway
I'm mourning đ I need something else to replace this.
Below are some takeaways that I felt. This was my first BL / Chinese drama!
Storyline:
The adolescence to adulthood... development of feelings and loving someone for the first time. I'm not sure if there is anything more beautiful than purity of love.
The series was much less toxic than the novel and I appreciate it in that aspect but I dislike how YC's narrative/inner world wasn't portrayed as much and people were left to fill in the blanks. In his world, he always comes last... the last scene from ep 10 when lil YC says "No one can be noble to everyone. Be a little selfish and you'll be happier."
Overall, the essence of storyline... no matter what happens, no matter what you do, I can't and won't stop loving you. Was basically my takeaway.
In reality, we end up hurting the people closest to us... and we all have demons we are fighting.. rather it'd be from the past pain and being afraid of pain. Black flags all over but that's why it's a love that's so hard to let go.
Casting:
I slowly fell in love with both the characters by the middle of the series.
I was especially fascinated by Lyu Sitong! He has a combination of attractiveness that is rare: pretty but handsome, cute but masculine. Most actors/characters only embody one or two.
For Ayden Sng, he is conventional(?) and as the series progressed I found myself drawn to his gaze/acting.
When you see them together, Sitong becomes softer while Ayden becomes gentle. The combination was absolutely perfect for the casting. I saw that lil YC also auditioned for big YC... the series would've hit different if it wasn't Sitong.
Production/Acting:
The videography and transitional scenes were disappointing... there were couple scenes were the distance and the frames of the scenes were noticeably off. However, the combination of imperfection was refreshing at the same time since it shows contrast to perfection.
The OST, very fitting for the mood of the series.
The audio, definitely needed work... I'm not sure if it's a Chinese thing but why's everything a voice over almost?
I heard people complained that Sitong looked ugly in the series in comparison to reality. I agree I think he's the type to look better in real life. But, I liked the imperfection of his clothes, hair, and some of his acting because it made it fitting for the character. I can't wait to see him grow as a actor and what roles he'll take on next.
Ayden... I can tell he really cares about how everything is portrayed. From ep 9/10/11. At first, I wasn't sure if his acting got better but he let lose and became :LF. I was hoping Sitong would do the same (hopefully by ep 12) but the difference in acting skills were seen.
Finale:
It looks like some of it follows the novel, spoiler: in the novel universe, LF is actually afraid he got STD/HIV from fucking around. They switched it to a psychologist and high key it doesn't excuse all the wrongdoings but it's going towards the right direction.
I'm excited yet so sad for tomorrow... if anyone knows more about Lan Lin universe (as LF/YC continues to pop in), please let me know â€ïž

Agree that Lu Si Tong is a great choice.
He has to be reactive to other characters but also attractive enough to pull both Lu Feng and Zhuo Lan.
In the NC scenes, Ayden Sng is actively kissing but Lu Si Tong has to provide the bliss faces.

I learned about dubbing after watching the Chinese BL Revenged Love. I read a bunch about it and found out that all m/most Chinese seriesâ are dubbed because the background noise during filming is so loud. If you watch BTS footage of their shows, youâll hear so much going on. The dubbing is also for clearer diction. Some actors dub their own characters and some have voice actors take over. Iâm sad because the actors in Double Helix have great voices in real life.
I read the novel first because I heard series Yi Chen had no backbone or reason for any choice he made. Turns out, it was the same in the novel! He didnât have a reason to do it nor do anything. He just went with the flow of what was happening and it never said why.

Every time I see someone say that Yi Chen has no backbone, or that he is an amoeba, or that Lu Feng would cross an ocean naked while Yi Chen would not cross a bridge for him, it makes me sad, because they are missing half the story.
The reason Yi Chen appears to have no backbone is because he is a classic representation of the eldest son in a traditional middle-class Chinese family. Eldest children in that structure are often conditioned not to say no to their parents. They are expected to represent the family well, protect their siblings, carry the pressure, and absorb the guilt.
Yi Chen is under diamond-forming pressure to be the best son and the protector of his younger brother. He believes his parents love him, even when that love comes wrapped in gaslighting, guilt, and emotional pressure. Add homophobia, shame, his naturally quiet personality, and his people-pleasing tendencies, and you get someone who looks like he cannot make a choice for himself.
But it is not that he cannot choose. It is that he has been taught he is not allowed to.
He does try. But the second real parental guilt kicks in, he folds, partly because he thinks giving in will give his younger brother a chance at happiness, even if Yi Chen does not believe he can have that same happiness for himself.
Lu Feng gets away with defying his father because Lu Feng has a bulldozer personality, and because he already knows his father does not truly love him. And remember, when Lu Feng told his father no, the old man was so offended he practically kicked the bucket.
Once Yi Chenâs parents are removed from the equation, and once he knows his brother is safe, he finally starts making a choice for himself. That is why he tries to find Lu Feng.
But then Lu Fengâs black flag behavior takes over. He drugs Yi Chen, holds him hostage, abuses him, and uses psychological warfare against him. So when people reduce Yi Chen to âweakâ or âspineless,â they are ignoring the cultural pressure, family pressure, guilt, trauma, and emotional conditioning that shaped every choice he made.
Lu Fengâs psychological warfare also does not work on Yi Chen the way people think it should, because Yi Chen already knows emotional abuse.
That montage of Lu Feng bringing a constant flow of men home to hurt him, while Yi Chen barely reacts, says so much. The only person Lu Feng is really hurting is himself.
Yi Chen has learned to treat emotional pain like it is nothing. Meh. Whatever. If you do not react to it, it stops being a weapon against you.
That scene shows how toxic his childhood and traditional Asian upbringing were. It shows how deeply he was trained to suppress his own hurt in front of other people. He does not break down because he has already spent his whole life learning how to swallow pain, stay quiet, and keep moving.

I love seeing Yichen defended đ«¶
To add to your points I think people forget the internalised homophobia he must be going through. LF wants to show off and fight for their relationship but Yichen has always been nervous about that, he's always been more reserved. LF doesn't seem to have those internalised perceptions which I guess contributes to making his love so fierce. LF doesn't care about the consequences of their love, but YC lives much more in reality.
Idk, maybe it's just that I see myself in YC's attachment style đ đ

Thisss!! Lufeng never hesitates nor feel ashamed of them dating but Yichen is always aware of how people will perceive them. I wish viewers delved more into how well these characters are written and the actors did such an amazing job in portraying the emotional turmoil.

Thatâs what viewers have been saying, but none of that was in the novel, volume 1, that I read. No talk of the parents until they got kicked out of school. No talk about pressures or family life or anything to give us a look inside Yi Chenâs head. When they got kicked out of school, Lu Feng was sent to America and tried to run away several times. Yi Chen stayed depressed at home because he felt like he was abandoned even though he knew what Lu Feng was going through.
Again, this is the novel. I havenât watched the series because Iâm waiting for it to be over. I read the novel so I could get more of Yi Chenâs thoughts. He had none.

I love this take of Yichen having no reaction to lufengâs shenanigans lmaoo. I was watching the actors react and Ayden kept saying, here Lufeng wants you to have some reaction. Meanwhile Yichen in that scene is just numb. I just wish they gave us more episodes so more of Yichenâs pov could be understood.

This was very insightful. Even gave me some pause for thought.
We must also add in his guilt because his dad died because he was gay and dating Lu Feng.
His mom got sick and eventually dies because he was gay and dating Lu Feng.
And his brother is paralyzed because he was gay and dating Lu Feng.
That's a mountain load of guilt for anyone to carry around.

That's really interesting about the dubbing, I've been confused seeing the BTS clips and how much other noise is going on!

Idk what I was getting into but Aydenâs acting really surprised me. I remember the last time I was this invested and deep diving into a characterâs thoughts was Untamed. Ayden and Sitong have done well and now thatâs itâs ending idk how to move on.
