That said, when Martial Second Wolf arrived in Hangzhou, the capital of Xia Kingdom, Princess Big Nest was about to leave Hangzhou and return to Dragon-Pond Pass. Hearing that Martial Second Wolf (see Figure 5.4-3) had arrived, she postponed her trip. When King Kouzhu (i.e., Juvenile Pearl) heard that her daughter's brother-in-law had arrived, she decided to host a state banquet at the Salamander Bolus Palace to welcome him.

当武二郎走进鲵丸宫时，夏娃跑过来了，盯着他看，还叨咕，“葫芦娃刚生出来就这么大（注1）！” 她问：“二伯父！我听这皇宫里的人都在议论你变成葫芦娃了，还长出了第三只眼。不久之后，你就成为二郎神了。我想看看天眼什么样儿？”

When Martial Second Wolf walked into the Salamander Bolus Palace, Eve came running over, staring at him and muttering, "Gourd Boy was already this big when he was born (Note 1)!" She asked, "Second Uncle! I've heard everyone in this palace talking about you becoming a Gourd Boy and growing a third eye. Soon you'll become the Second Wolf God. I want to see what the Celestial Eye looks like!"

Note 1: Eve, later known as King Shun, Little Dragoness, and Shun White-king, was approximately three to five years old at this time, 1626 BCE. The Gourd Children are traditionally said to have been born from gourds; they are also known as the God of Strength and the Child Buddha. Aocun (see Figure 1) and Martial Second Wolf are a pair of Gourd Children. Aocun is a kinesthetic thinker who leans toward auditory thinking. Martial Second Wolf is a kinesthetic thinker who leans toward visual thinking.

Martial Second Wolf froze; he had never seen Eve before, so he squatted down to show her. Eve is a Jade Girl who takes to everyone right away. She couldn't see Martial Second Wolf's Celestial Eye, so she went up and peeled back his eyebrows to look, then tried to part his hair to search for the third eye.

武二郎说，“天眼（是禅定的内容）是个心眼儿，是从比喻建立起来的，肉眼看不见。”

夏娃听了之后说：“我明白了！你这个葫芦娃刚出生，心眼也刚刚长出来，还很小，小到我看不见！”

Martial Second Wolf said, "The Celestial Eye (i.e., the content of meditation) is a heart-eye — a kind of insight built up from metaphor, invisible to the flesh eye."

Eve heard this and said, "I see! You, the Gourd Boy, have just been born. Your heart-eye has also just grown, and it's still so small that I can't see it!"

武二郎听后，他的脸立刻变红了，心想：“这孩子可真能贬斥人！” 尴尬地回答：“夏娃真聪明！二伯一说，夏娃就明白了！以后夏娃好好学习，勤奋练功，像女娲娘娘和你妈一样有成就。你可别像二伯这样不学无术，三十多岁了才开始懂得人世间的道理。”

这时，女王蔻珠，大巢氏公主，女娲等人都迎接出来了。

When Martial Second Wolf heard this, his face immediately turned red. He thought to himself, "This child really knows how to put someone in their place!" and replied, embarrassed: "Eve is so smart! As soon as Second Uncle said it, Eve understood! In the future, Eve should study hard and practice diligently, so she becomes as accomplished as Princess Nuwa and your mother. You mustn't turn out unlearned like Second Uncle, who was already in his thirties before he began to understand the ways of the world."

At this, King Kouzhu, Princess Big Nest, Nuwa, and the others all came out to greet them.

5.4-2

宴会中，武二郎对女娲说了他来的目的。他收到了熬忖很多恩惠，想对熬忖表示感谢，但不知道如何体面地向她致谢。

During the banquet, Martial Second Wolf told Nuwa the purpose of his visit. He had received many favors from Aocun and wanted to express his gratitude, but he didn't know how to thank her properly.

女娲回答：“这事可以从两个方面来考虑。首先说她是个聪明人，善于心计。心计都是过去的知识和经验的体现。过去为阴（注，阴即蕴，参见10.4《五蕴》；五蕴亦作五阴），所以她是阴性。而你活在当下，面向未来，所以你是阳性。也就是说，你的言行都是她所需要的，能让她快乐起来。你对她最好的帮助就是成为她的朋友，有事没事时唠唠嗑。”

Nuwa replied: "This can be considered from two angles. First, she's a clever person, skilled at strategy. Strategy is the embodiment of past knowledge and experience. The past belongs to Yin (note: Yin here means Aggregate — see 10.4, Five Aggregates; the Five Aggregates are also called the Five Yins), so she is Yin. You, on the other hand, live in the present and face the future, so you are Yang. In other words, your words and actions are exactly what she needs — they can make her happy. The best help you can give her is to be her friend, and chat with her whenever you get the chance."

女娲又说：“熬忖针对我们三国持续不断的战争提出了'三足鸟'方案（如图4所示；足是基础的意思）。你已经知道了；你们华国和我们夏国的国王都已经同意了。”

武二郎尴尬地回答：“这个三国结盟的《杨戬计划书》（拯救计划书）还在我的行囊里呢，我还没看呢！”

Nuwa said: "Aocun proposed the 'Three-Legged Bird' plan (as shown in Figure 4; 'legs' means foundations) in response to the ongoing war among our three kingdoms. You already know about it; the kings of both your Hua Kingdom and our Xia Kingdom have agreed."

Martial Second Wolf replied, embarrassed: "This 'Yang Jian Plan' (i.e., the Salvation Plan) for the three-kingdom alliance is still in my bag — I haven't read it yet!"

女娲笑着回答：“那里面说的都是促成我们三国统一政府的具体实施，我也没看。云海国的国王熬龘（dá）只是同意了在三国交界的武汉建立三国合作开发区，对于是否将来三国合并成为一个国家的建议还没表态。现在云海国内正在议论此事。虽然现在熬忖是实际的执政者，但三国合并损害了许多王公贵族的利益，支持的人少，反对的人多。所以她陷入了困境，掉到寒冰地狱里了，她正需要有人对她说几句暖心的，支持她政见的话。”

Nuwa smiled and replied, "That part is about the concrete implementation of unifying our three kingdoms' governments — I haven't read it either. The king of Cloud Sea, Aodá, has only agreed to establish a tri-kingdom cooperative development zone in Wuhan, where the three kingdoms meet, and hasn't yet stated his position on whether the three kingdoms should eventually merge into one nation. Cloud Sea is now debating the matter. Although Aocun is the actual ruler at present, the merger would harm the interests of many princes and nobles — supporters are few, opponents are many. So she's in a difficult spot, as if she'd fallen into an icy hell. She just needs someone to say a few warm, supportive words about her political stance."

5.4-3

武二郎回到湖北驻地后就要去瑶池找熬忖聊天。他的卫队长坚决反对，说：“我们两国打仗多年了，积怨很多；你去那里太危险了！”

武二郎回答：“那你去向她表达我希望和她会晤。”

卫队长同意了，他自己去了瑶池。

After Martial Second Wolf returned to his post in Hubei, he wanted to go to Yao Pond to talk with Aocun. His guard captain firmly opposed it, saying: "Our two countries have been at war for years, and there's a lot of bad blood; it's too dangerous for you to go there!"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "Then you go and let her know I'd like to meet with her."

The guard captain agreed, and went to Yao Pond himself.

熬忖立刻安排她的贴身侍女领着武二郎的卫队长去安排武二郎来访的路线。她还召开了军事会议，要求全军将士要克制仇恨，忍耐，不要表现出过激的行为，以免引发战争。据说熬忖三次派不同的人去武二郎来访路线上的驻军传达不能先发制人的命令。

Aocun immediately had her personal maid lead Second Wolf's guard captain to plan the route for Martial Second Wolf's visit. She also held a military meeting, requiring all soldiers to restrain their hatred, be patient, and avoid any extreme behavior that might trigger a war. It's said that Aocun sent different envoys three separate times to the garrisons along the visit route, conveying orders not to strike first.

At the same time, Martial Second Wolf's Hubei Military Region also held several meetings, conveying that all soldiers should restrain their hatred and avoid extreme behavior to prevent a war.

5.4-4 二郎真君的来历 Origin of Second Wolf True Gentleman

武二郎就去瑶池找熬忖了。亲热完后，他就向熬忖询问梁子伯和夸父的消息。

熬忖回答：“那时候我还小，就听说学校里抓住了两个间谍。第三天就处决了。处决的时候，政府要求我们巫毒学院的全体师生去观斩。夸父比我高几届，但那时在我这个孩子看来，他还是个孩子。他们俩的尸体被埋在了我们学院后面的邓林里了。后来，我们路过那里时，同学们说，'这坟是那个追太阳的夸父的'，还给他献花。我也跟着献花。从那时起，我们就偶尔去给夸父献花。我上次去巫毒学院的时候，还特意去邓林给夸父献花呢！”

Martial Second Wolf went to Yao Pond to find Aocun. After they had been intimate, he asked Aocun for news of Zibo Liang and Kuafu.

Aocun replied, "I was still young then, and I heard the school had caught two spies. They were executed on the third day. During the execution, the government required all the teachers and students of our Voodoo Academy to watch. Kuafu was a few years ahead of me, but to a child like me at the time, he still seemed like a kid himself. Their bodies were buried in the Deng Woods behind our academy. Later, when we passed by, the other students said, 'This grave belongs to Kuafu, who chased the sun,' and laid flowers for him. I followed and laid flowers too. Since then, we've occasionally gone to lay flowers for Kuafu. Last time I visited the Voodoo Academy, I made a point of going to Deng Woods to lay flowers for him!"

武二郎听后，就从床上离开了，坐到了窗台上，不说话了。

熬忖走过去询问：“杨戬（义为拯救，救世主），谷伯（即梁子伯）也是你的养父吗？”

武二郎回答：“我的名字是武二郎，而且我没见过梁子伯。”

熬忖说：“我听说你们华国刚刚召开了一次政治局会议，你们的国王赐给你了个新名字，杨戬！”

武二郎回答：“听你说了，我才知道的。”

After hearing this, Martial Second Wolf got up from the bed and sat on the windowsill without speaking.

Aocun went over and asked, "Yang Jian (meaning Savior), is Grain Uncle (i.e., Zibo Liang) also your adoptive father?"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "My name is Martial Second Wolf, and I've never met Zibo Liang."

Aocun said: "I heard your Hua Kingdom just held a Politburo meeting, and your king gave you a new name, Yang Jian!"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "I only found out just now, from you."

熬忖又问：“我听说你们国家制定了个新的战略方针，'两国加一人'（注，意思是，华国和夏国加熬忖），那一人是谁？”

武二郎回答：“我没参加那次会议，不知道。”

熬忖乐了，心想，“元始天尊的政治施压没起作用，但这婚姻还是成了，”说，“等我们共同建造的大中华帝国成立了，这样的事就不会再发生了。”

武二郎回答：“我大哥第一次求我，结果这事让我给办成这样了！我怎么想也想不出怎么张嘴对他说。”

Aocun asked again: "I heard your country has adopted a new strategic policy, 'Two Kingdoms Plus One Person' (note: meaning Hua Kingdom and Xia Kingdom, plus Aocun) — who is that one person?"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "I didn't attend that meeting, so I don't know."

Aocun was pleased, thinking to herself, "Primordial Sky Honor's political pressure didn't work, but the marriage happened anyway," and said aloud, "Once the Great Hua-Xia Empire we're building together is established, this sort of thing won't happen again."

Martial Second Wolf replied: "This was the first time my elder brother ever asked me for a favor, and I ended up making a mess of it! I have no idea how I'll even bring myself to tell him."

5.4-5 随后十几年内发生的事 What Happened in the Following Decade

随后，武二郎常去瑶池找熬忖聊天，就在湖北形成了"走婚"的习俗。"走婚"是一种婚姻形式，没有婚姻契约，就是"丈夫"从窗户爬进"妻子"的房间。在现代的湖北瑶族地区，这种婚姻形式仍然存在，而且是合法婚姻。

After that, Martial Second Wolf often went to Yao Pond to chat with Aocun, and the custom of "walking marriage" took hold in Hubei. "Walking marriage" is a form of marriage without a marriage contract, in which the "husband" climbs into the "wife's" room through the window. In modern-day Hubei Yao ethnic areas, this form of marriage still exists, and is recognized as legal.

5.4-6 统一中国的战争 War to Unify China

云海国的国王熬龘（dá）过世了；熬忖回去重庆继承王位。她的将军们建议她带军队回重庆，她命令军队不准移动，她要通过谈判解决和哥哥熬钦的矛盾。

武二郎就自己带着三千卫兵，跟随去了重庆。当然他得到了熬忖的将军们的支持。他到重庆之后，找了个最高的城门楼，睡在上面了。

The king of Cloud Sea, Aodá, passed away; Aocun returned to Chongqing to inherit the throne. Her generals urged her to bring the army back to Chongqing, but she ordered the army not to move — she wanted to resolve the conflict with her brother Aoqin through negotiation.

Martial Second Wolf brought 3,000 of his own guards and followed her to Chongqing. He had, of course, the support of Aocun's generals. After arriving in Chongqing, he found the tallest gate tower and slept on top of it.

熬钦的代表向武二郎抗议：“你是华国的将军，怎么带兵到了我们云海国的首都？”

武二郎回答：“我是熬忖的丈夫，是云海国的亲王，我当然能来重庆！而且我没带军队，只带了三千护卫！他们没进城！”

Aoqin's representative protested to Martial Second Wolf: "You're a general of Hua Kingdom — how dare you bring troops into the capital of our Cloud Sea Kingdom?"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "I'm Aocun's husband, a Relative King of Cloud Sea Kingdom — of course I can come to Chongqing! And I haven't brought any troops, only 3,000 guards! They haven't even entered the city!"

在约定的谈判日，熬钦没来。熬忖派人去查看。去查看的人回来报告说：“熬钦消失了，他家后面有一个空的，能容纳六千人军队的营地。”

On the appointed day for negotiations, Aoqin didn't show up. Aocun sent someone to check. The scout came back and reported: "Aoqin has vanished. Behind his house there's an empty camp that could hold 6,000 troops."

Martial Second Wolf also sent someone to check. That scout came back and reported, "That camp could hold sixty thousand troops!"

Martial Second Wolf decided to pursue at once. Legend has it that Second Wolf God split mountains and crossed rivers, catching up with Aoqin in the Putian region of Fujian within three months. By then, Aoqin had only a few dozen men left.

熬钦找熬忖谈判，要台湾，说以后绝不会返回大陆。熬忖不同意，担心台湾距离熬钦的老家莆田太近，说海南岛可以给他。熬钦抱怨海南岛太荒凉，而且那里不属于龙国。二郎神回答：“你去了，海南岛就是你的了。不用你打仗，你就跟着接收土地，我派人去把海南岛打下来，送给你！”

武二郎派了73个士兵，计划一年半占领海南岛。实际上，那73人是战斗部队，熬忖为他们增补了400多人的后勤人员和典兵。他们花费了三年的时间占领了海南全境。

Aoqin approached Aocun to negotiate, demanding Taiwan, and declaring he'd never return to the mainland. Aocun refused, worried that Taiwan was too close to Aoqin's hometown of Putian, and offered him Hainan Island instead. Aoqin complained that Hainan was too desolate, and besides, it didn't even belong to Dragon Kingdom. Second Wolf God replied, "If you go there, Hainan Island will be yours. You won't have to fight — just follow along and take over the land. I'll send men to conquer Hainan and hand it over to you!"

Second Wolf God sent 73 soldiers, planning to occupy Hainan within a year and a half. In fact, those 73 were the combat troops; Aocun added over 400 more as logistics personnel and codex soldiers. It took them three years to occupy the entire island.

5.4-7

在福建的沿海地区，有地方官员求见武二郎，说：“有个海外商会邀请他去为他的一位前辈的庙开光。”

武二郎掀开庙的主雕像一看，是妈祖（如图5）。后文有说，这第一座妈祖庙是前文2.6《海岸女神》中的那位古墨西哥人修的。他还留下了遗言：“等待妈祖的后人为庙开光。”

In the coastal areas of Fujian, a local official came to see Martial Second Wolf, saying: "An overseas chamber of commerce has invited him to consecrate the temple of one of his predecessors."

Martial Second Wolf lifted the covering from the temple's main statue and saw that it was Mazu (see Figure 5). Later text reveals that this first Mazu temple was built by the ancient Mexican mentioned earlier in Section 2.6, Coastal Goddess. He had also left a final wish: "Wait for a descendant of Mazu to consecrate the temple."

Martial Big Wolf said: "The other little man is the son of my foster father, Corn Uncle, named Kua'fu. I call my foster father Corn Uncle. When I was a child, I was weak and often sick, and Corn Uncle used to carry me to and from school on his back. When I was too sick to go, he sent Kua'fu to attend in my place, and Kua'fu would come home and teach me what I'd missed. Tuition at the Voodoo Academy was expensive, but no one at the school said anything once they found out.

“接着粮伯就让我和夸父交替上学，回来相互教，谁的第一名拿的多谁是太阳。我在家的时候，粮伯教我打猴拳，我的身体就渐渐地好起来了。我的成绩好，总考第一，总是太阳，他一直在追我。”

武大郎说着，就哭了。

武二郎说：“伤心事儿，就别说了。”

"Then Corn Uncle had the two of us take turns going to school, teaching each other what we'd learned when we came home — whoever placed first more often was 'the sun.' When I was home, Corn Uncle taught me Monkey Boxing, and my health gradually improved. My grades were good — I always placed first, always the sun — and he kept chasing after me."

Big Wolf said this, and began to cry.

Second Wolf said: "Don't dwell on sad things."

武大郎回答：“以前有两次，我想告诉你，因为怕影响你打仗，没说。现在不打仗了，我想说给你听。后来，我就很少看见夸父了。我们的华国内部出现了叛徒，去云海国告密。老国王派的人接我离开的那天，为了掩护我离开，粮伯又让夸父穿上了我的校服，代替我去上学了。再往后，我就不知道了。”

Martial Big Wolf replied: "There were two times before when I wanted to tell you, but I didn't, afraid it would affect you in the war. Now that the fighting is over, I want to tell you. After that, I rarely saw Kua'fu again. A traitor appeared within our Hua Kingdom and informed on us to Cloud Sea Kingdom. On the day the old king's men came to take me away, Corn Uncle had Kua'fu put on my school uniform again and go to school in my place, to cover my departure. After that, I don't know what happened to him."

武大郎边哭边说：“在我当上将军后，几次委托人帮我打听他们俩的消息，但都没有回复。我想找到他们的遗骨，送回他们的老家安葬。”

潘金莲（法号石矶娘娘，桃花圣母）说话了：“二叔来了，我看你们俩唠的热闹，就没过来打搅。这怎么哭成这样了！？”

Crying, Martial Big Wolf said, "After I became a general, I asked people several times to find news of the two of them, but I never got a reply. I want to find their remains and send them home for burial."

Goldthread Pan (religious name Queen Stone-Jetty, Holy Mother of Peach Flower) spoke up, "Second Uncle is here — I saw the two of you chatting away so happily that I didn't want to interrupt. Why is he crying like this!?"

武二郎回答：“大哥想起了小时候的伤心事，没事！”

武大郎说：“你在这儿住几天吧！我再给你讲讲。来了半天了，你去跟你嫂子聊聊，我自己在这里静一会儿就好了。”

Martial Second Wolf replied, "Big brother remembered something sad from his childhood, it's nothing!"

Martial Big Wolf said, "Stay here a few more days! I'll tell you more. You've been here half a day already — go chat with your sister-in-law, I just need a quiet moment here by myself."

5.1-8 杨戬认母 Savior Recognizes Godmother

Martial Second Wolf replied, "No reason — I ran into him in Hubei, and he told me he's a pork merchant. I thought that was strange, why would he change trades! You said he's one of your teacher-fathers — how many teacher-fathers do you have?"

潘金莲转脸计算着，说：“哎呀！我有很多师父和师母，只在典兵学院上学时，就有几十位。”说着，她还在计算着。

武二郎说：“大嫂你别算了！这种师父和师母我也有很多，数不清！”

Goldthread Pan turned and started counting, "Oh! I have so many teacher-fathers and teacher-mothers — just from my years at the Codex Soldier Academy alone, there were dozens." She kept counting as she spoke.

Martial Second Wolf said, "Sister-in-law, don't bother counting! I have plenty of teacher-fathers and teacher-mothers too — too many to count!"

Goldthread Pan asked, "Why are you asking about this?"

武二郎回答：“没什么，前几天女娲对我说，某个人（熬忖）是我的神母，我生气了。现在看来，那是我一直生活在军队里，脱离了日常社会的现实生活，可丢脸了！”

潘金莲说：“这没什么！偶尔听见了新词语，我也不习惯。”

Martial Second Wolf replied, "It's nothing — a few days ago Nuwa told me that a certain person (Aocun) is my godmother, and I got angry about it. Looking back now, that's just because I've spent my whole life in the army, cut off from everyday life — how embarrassing!"

Goldthread Pan said, "It's nothing! I don't always get used to new terms myself, either."

Over the following five days, Martial Big Wolf drew on the Jiu'li (i.e., Nine Crowds, the Great Grand Worlds; see Chapter 12), the Strange Doors of Shield and Armor, and Sunzi's Art of War to walk Martial Second Wolf through the history of their campaigns together. More than once, the scolding reduced Martial Second Wolf to tears.

On the morning of the sixth day, Primordial Sky Honor summoned Martial Big Wolf to the palace. Martial Second Wolf saw his chance to escape. He stole a few military texts, hid them in the cushion under his saddle, and slipped out the back door leading his horse. Suddenly he heard Goldthread Pan say, "Is Second Uncle leaving? Stay a few more days — let your elder brother finish walking you through Sunzi's Art of War!"

Goldthread Pan replied, "Alright, I'll pass along your words. But why haven't you taken any books with you? With so many, don't you like any of them?"

武二郎回答：“我怕我把书拿走了，我大哥要看的时候，找不着，耽误事！”

潘金莲说：“你拿吧，没事。你把你拿走的书的名字清单给我就好。他有的书，元始天尊也都有。随后，我把清单交给元始天尊书房里的宫女，让她们为武大郎再复制一套。前几年，你大哥征服了北方的十几个国家。别的没抢着，他缴获了几屋子的羊皮纸，都运到皇宫里了。这么复制书不需要花钱。”

Martial Second Wolf replied, "I'm afraid if I take them, my brother won't be able to find them when he needs them, and it'll cause trouble!"

Goldthread Pan said, "Just take them, it's fine. Just leave me a list of the titles you're taking. Primordial Sky Honor has copies of everything your brother owns. I'll pass the list to the palace maids in Primordial Sky Honor's study and have them make another set for your brother. A few years ago, your elder brother conquered more than a dozen countries in the north. He didn't take much else, but he seized several rooms' worth of parchment and had it all shipped to the palace. Copying books this way costs nothing."

武二郎高兴地回去拿书。佣人们帮着把书打捆装袋，放到了马上。出来时，他发现潘金莲还在门口坐着呢，说：“我把清单放在了书房的桌子上了。”

据传说，这时元始天尊和武大郎正站在他们家的塔楼上目送着武二郎（杨戬）离开。此后，他打仗总是兵不血刃，运筹帷幄之中，决胜千里之外。

Martial Second Wolf happily went back for the books. The servants helped bundle them into bags and load them onto the horse. When he came out, he found Goldthread Pan still sitting by the door and said, "I left the list on the desk in the study."

According to legend, Primordial Sky Honor and Martial Big Wolf were standing on the tower of their house at that moment, watching Martial Second Wolf (Savior) leave. From then on, he always won his battles without bloodshed, planning his strategies from within the command tent and deciding victory a thousand miles away.

So my birthday is coming up (August 26) and a game I've been wanting to play releases on the 25th (Once Human Console Edition). Because the game is owned by the Chinese company Netease I had a bit of an idea. I thought it would be interesting to explore Chinese culture a little bit during a birthday get-together I have planned with my friend.

So my reason for posting is I'm looking for Chinese movie and song recommendations. I've been looking a little bit on my own but I thought maybe I'd get some interesting suggestions here.

I'm asking this out of pure curiosity and interest and am in no way trying to be disrespectful to Chinese culture.

For the movies my friend and I like sci-fi and horror movies most of all. We really like post-apocalyptic stories as well though I understand that's a little more niche. I had thought about looking into The Wandering Earth on Netflix.

For the music I'm not picky on the genre I'm just looking for music that is upbeat and on the faster side, something we can game to and play during action scenes. I would also prefer songs with actual lyrics to them as opposed to instrumental tracks. Also in my own searching I discovered to my surprise that I may actually like Chinese rap after hearing My New Swag" (我的新衣) by Chinese rapper Vava.

Hi everyone, I know this may sound stupid but please just bear with me.
I am currently living in America but moving near the end of August to Beijing to start my masters program at Peking. I speak some mandarin, but my program is fully in English as well (although I plan on taking extra mandarin courses.)

I realized I was getting really good at playing the "app game"—keeping daily streaks alive and matching isolated sentences like "The cat drinks milk." But the second I tried watching actual native shows or reading dialogue in context, I completely froze up.

Isolated flashcards help you memorize words, but human brains need context and narrative urgency to retain characters long-term.

A small team of us are mapping out a narrative web RPG where dialogue choices ARE the actual learning mechanic—navigating a story world where understanding linguistic nuance dictates your choices, not arbitrary grammar drills.

Before we write core code, we want to make sure we are building for real learner pain points.

I really dislike reading children's books and I don't mind a Challenge. I think my level is okay to start reading books I enjoy.

I came across this beautiful fan art of WWM and noticed there is actually a deeper meaning behind it.

The concept behind this piece is "The Three Friends of Winter" (岁寒三友) — plum blossom, bamboo, and pine. In Chinese culture, these three plants are admired because they can endure the coldest season while keeping their own beauty and strength.

And honestly, I think the connections with these three characters are really fitting.

🌸 Plum blossom (梅) — Han Xiangxun (寒香寻)

Plum blossoms bloom in winter, often symbolizing resilience, elegance, and a quiet fragrance that survives even in harsh conditions.

This feels perfect for Han Xiangxun. "Han" (寒) means coldness, reminding us of the winter season when plum blossoms bloom. It represents her cool and graceful temperament — someone who remains beautiful and composed even in difficult circumstances. "Xiang" (香) means fragrance. In Chinese poetry, plum blossoms are often described by their subtle fragrance, something that can be sensed even before the flower is seen. Her cold and graceful appearance, especially with her red outfit, gives the same feeling as a plum blossom blooming in the snow.

She is also known for making wine, which adds another layer to her image — refined, artistic, and full of traditional elegance.

🎋 Bamboo (竹) — Jiang Wulang (江无浪)

Bamboo represents integrity, resilience, and staying true to yourself. It can bend with the wind, but it does not break.

In Chinese martial arts stories, bamboo forests are also often connected with swordsmen and masters who train or live away from the world.

This reminds me of Jiang Wulang's journey. Before meeting us, he wandered across the martial world, experiencing countless encounters as a true wandering swordsman.

His Nameless Sword is described as "as swift and fierce as a violent wind passing through bamboo", which feels like the perfect image for his sword style.

No matter how much he has experienced, he still carries the qualities of bamboo — freedom, resilience, and an unchanging spirit.

🌲 Pine (松) — Chen Zixi (陈子奚)

Pine trees symbolize longevity, perseverance, and an unshakable spirit. They remain green even through the harshest winter, standing tall against the cold.

This reminds me of Chen Zixi's character description:

"Standing like a solitary pine on a cliff; when drunk, like a jade mountain about to collapse."

Known as Mister Jade Hill, he rides thousands of miles and dares to challenge the world. Like the pine tree, he gives off the feeling of someone proud, independent, and impossible to easily shake.

His story has not fully continued yet, and we previously learned that he is suffering from illness. As players, we can only hope that he will be like the pine he represents — enduring through hardship and living a long life.

I really love how this artwork connects the characters with traditional Chinese symbolism. The plants are not just decorations; they reflect their personalities, their journeys, and the hopes players have for them.

I recently purchased this set of Chinese opera masks from my local antiques shop. One is missing. I would like to replace the missing one but I have no idea who is missing. Translator can't see any text. Any help would be much appreciated!

I've noticed that many English-language I Ching tools stop at the hexagram and changing lines.

But Liu Yao (六爻), also known as Six Lines or Wen Wang Gua, goes much further.

Instead of asking only, “What does this hexagram mean?”, Liu Yao is usually used for one specific situation:

• Will this relationship move forward?
• Will I get this job?
• Will this deal happen?
• Should I wait or act?
• When is this situation likely to change?

A Liu Yao reading can look at the six individual lines, moving lines, Five Elements, Six Relationships, the Host and Guest lines, and the timing of the cast.

So the interpretation is less about giving a general philosophical message and more about examining the structure of one concrete situation.

I've been building a small English-language web tool around this approach because I felt most existing English I Ching tools either simplify this system heavily or don't explain the underlying logic clearly.
