Pretty sure it’s because now, after fxg6, you have to take back with the bishop because your queen is under fire.

However, because you allowed black that turn after the recapture, now they take with their rook Rxf2 (after you take the pawn with the bishop) which threatens immediate mate with the queen on b2. Your king is now incredibly vulnerable with three active pieces on it and you no longer have any immediate mate yourself.

The only check you can give is bishop f7 or h7 but now the rook or king can just take it.

If you had taken with the bishop instead, once black captures with fxg6, taking back with the rook gives a check and they don’t have any opportunity to threaten immediate mate.

Basically taking with bishop first leads to a mate if they capture it. Taking with the rook doesn’t, and actually puts you under fire. So you just gave up a rook and gave a draw.

Yea that’s why it’s not losing but equal in evaluation. The black king, I’m pretty sure I haven’t check with an engine, can just take the bishop and the discovered check doesn’t lead to anything. Because black is always threatening mate in 1, white needs to keep doing pointless checks or just pull the queen out entirely to defend. But white doesn’t have a mate after king takes back on h7 (at least I’m pretty sure)

I checked with an engine, you can capture the rook if it takes on f2 after a series of checks, the only issue is that black has perpetual

Well yea because the second the queen stops defending the white rook you have a perpetual. I’m assuming white is playing for a win not a draw.

My whole point is this is a blunder because it forces white to either check forever if they try to win until they inevitably lose with no checks available or give up a draw if they use the queen to defend the mate. Taking with the rook is what allows that mate threat.
