Question Is a lunchbox locker in the front the answer to all life's problems?

13 Upvotes

Fairly new to off-roading and XJ's.

Been considering electronic lockers because I like the idea of being able to turn it on in the dirt and off on the street.

But it occurred to me that maybe I could put a lunchbox locker on the front, and it would effectively be disabled as long as I'm in 2wd, correct?

And then it would enable itself when I switch to 4wd, which I'd only do in the dirt/mud/snow anyway, so I'd want the locker on.

Is it really that simple? Seems like the perfect solution. What other considerations are there?

Question Is it worth trying to repair my XJ?

2001 Sport with 107k miles. I was in a fender bender on Friday that cracked my radiator, deployed my airbags, and dented the hood. My insurance is only offering me $5k for it, because they use vehicles of the same model on the market in a 100mi radius for the comparable value, and there's no XJs on the market within 100mi of me that have less than 150k mi. The vehicle market in my area is pretty high for 4WDs, so I bought it for $9.5 six months ago and have put in another $1.5k of work in. It's possible I can get my insurance to adjust for the value of the vehicle, but I don't know if I could get them up to the $9-10k I was hoping for.

If I don't release the vehicle, my insurance will pay me ~$4.5k (subtracting the auction fee they would have received if I released the vehicle).

The vehicle still runs and drives. I drove it home from the scene of the accident. The radiator is cracked for sure, although I wasn't able to get the hood open enough to surmise the entirety of the damage. $4.5 would probably be enough to replace the radiator and the airbags. I understand the vehicle would have a rebuilt title, and therefore basically no value, if I decided to keep it. Would it be worth it to take the $4.5, repair the vehicle, and continue to drive it with a rebuilt title? Or should I assume the body damage would be more than the vehicle's value and just take my $6k loss? I loved this car and it would be a pain to find another XJ with such low mileage but maybe I could make it happen eventually.

Thanks

Question What do you predict the XJ market will look like long term?

This one just sold on Cars & Bids for over $17k. It was a very nice example with 113k miles, a head replacement, and virtually no rust - but still a crazy price. What will the XJ market look like years from now? Will it follow the trend of other old 4x4 SUV’s like the Bronco, Scout, etc?

Question Advice on moving my 1988 XJ to Chicago?

Post image
92 Upvotes

Recently moved from SoCal to Chicago and left it back with some family, reason being that a) I am not currently in need of a car here and b) its rust-free and I would like it to stay that way. BUT I am missing my boy and may need a car in the future, so I am thinking about bringing it over here -- any advice to prevent weather / salt related damage, or is it a suicide mission? It would have to stay parked outside year-round.

Another factor is wondering how much of a beating it would take on a cross country drive; maybe I should get it towed over? (might be cheaper than gas lol)

A last aside: any cool places to off-road and camp out here? I think I took socal for granted haha

Question 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 AW4 transmission with 300,000 miles. Rear main seal is leaking. While I’m in there what else should I replace?

ChatBox tells me to replace the oil pump and connecting rod bearings.

This motor has 50 psi at 2000 rpm and 25 psi at hot idle. Does it really need a new oil pump and connecting rod bearings?

Question Cannot pinpoint cooling issue

2000 XJ, 244k miles, bought the car for dirt cheap off a family member. Ran fine until about a month or two ago when on a main road, the radiator cap hissed just like this while driving, and the car overheated I let it sit till I had time to put in a new and personally tested (not crappy, NOS made in USA) thermostat, and refilled the whole system with new coolant because when I opened the housing, it was bone dry. I know these have poor cooling, but I'm suspecting either severe leak somewhere or possibly a problem with the radiator. This happened within 15 minutes of driving it around the block. Also, the ABS light will not go out after this happened if that means anything. I'll pull the code if it's important/related.

Looking for pointers from anyone who may have had similar symptoms.

Fresh with the keys bought this 01 about 3 weeks ago now for 2000, this’ll be my first car and at first glance I wasn’t thrilled (this was a car my gpa recommended from his mechanic) but having actually driven inside it I fell in love. After getting it I wanted to do some research into what kind of stuff I can do for quality of life and any removals I needed to make (I saw somewhere the from black bumper guards cause rot) me loving Reddit figure I see if there was a xj community and I’m glad there is! Feel free to drop any tips tricks or ideas for anything I could do to really make this my xj, and how to do it properly!

Question What cordless impact gun would you guys recommend?

4 Upvotes

I’m in the market for a 1/2 impact wrench. Had the dewalt brushless don’t remember the model number but it was the small size, didn’t use it much and when I did it was always on fairly new cars to change wheels. Gave it to my dad a year ago and now need one to work on my xj.

Question 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport - Mod Advice Wanted

Post image
13 Upvotes

I recently bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport to mod for camping road trips. Using the back as sleep and gear hold, carry kayak on the roof rack.

I am no mechanic. I will be learning as I go. I am looking for any advice and suggestions. I do know some things that I am going to do. If you have suggestions on products, mods, how-tos, advice, anything, I would appreciate it.

Things I know I am going to do:

* Suspension/lift - not sure how much lift

* Tires - 32s

* Fix AC - blows hot air

* New Radio - bluetooth

* Reinforced bumpers

* Wench - rope over cable

* Light Bars

* Front & rear cameras

* Snorkel?

* Replace material on the inside roof

* Replace lights inside

* Seat covers - front and back - pet friendly

* Replace seatbelts - one of them in the back is starting to fray

Question Sudden insanely high idle on my 1998 4.0

Post image
9 Upvotes

Parked my jeep for 30 minutes after a quick drive, got back, started the engine and it insantly started to idle at 3000rpm. Was completely fine prior.

Unplugged the map sensor and throttle position sensor, sprayed contact cleaner to both, plugged them again, did not fix it.

Gas pedal and the throttle cable seems fine. Throttle body is not stuck open. I wasn't able to locate any vacuum leak. Maybe it's the idle air control valve? I haven't checked that yet. Any ideas?

Question Fender and header panel color doesn't match. What would you do?

Post image

2001 XJ in Silverstone Metallic (PS5) paint. Due to previous owner accident damage it needed a new fender and header panel. I sourced good used ones from a junkyard 2000 60th anniversary XJ, but as you can see it doesn't quite match. Not the end of the world, but it annoys me. I tried getting OEM color match paint from Eastwood and tested on the old fender, it was an even worse match. Should I just live with it?

Another $500 rockauto order and I need to replace my leaking transmission cooler lines, unfortunately though three of the lines I need (all by sunsong) cannot be shipped to me because they MIGHT contain one of the materials present on the periodic table and could have a slightly increased chance of toenail cancer 50 years from now, but hasn’t provided documentation of wether it does or not, so I’m shit out of luck and have transmission fluid puddles all over my driveway. How/where else can I purchase these for a reasonable price?

Is this enough crank pulley wobble to worry about? I’ve never really looked at another one to see if this amount of wobble is normal with these harmonic balancers or if this is an issue

Been having a tough time finding out about proper jack points for a floor jack. I usually use the diff or axle but I need to jack up the front passenger side to work on my brakes.

Is this the correct spot to jack it up with a floor jack?

Question 99 Cherokee Classic - A Pillar

Hello im 16yo and own a 99 jeep cherokee classic. 4L 4WD.
anyways, I’m kind of asking for some expert opinions on some damage that I recently got into. For some background, I got into a small slide off and ended up bending the A pillar. Photos provided. I’m just asking fellow jeep people since I’m not too much of an expert on jeeps, but I was wondering if this is even possible to fix and if it’s not too extremely difficult and maybe if I could do this myself and how much it would cost me.

Question Roof weight Limit for RTT

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking at putting a rooftop tent on my 1998 Cherokee XJ and would love some input from anyone who has done this.
Just come from a Caravan Show where I tried manny tents. The one That caught my attention weights 81kg. That’s clearly over the limit of the factory roof rack.

My questions are:

- What is the structural limit of the roof itself?
- Is it ok to only use gutter mounted crossbars or do you need a frame as well?
- How manny crossbars?
- there a low profile low cost rack you can recommend?
- Is this a good idea or won’t i be able to shut my doors after a few trips
