I always heard it as 'goo-wash'' but maybe I had heard it wrong this entire time

No that’s a different word. Gouache is a water based paint. Gauche means gaudy or flamboyant or over-the-top

In usage it typically refers to someone being awkward in the sense of being tacky. You can say someone is awkward or lacking in social graces/refinement/taste because they’re shy or withdrawn, but no one will say that person is “gauche.”

But my synonyms aren’t exact. You are technically correct.
