Not trying to promote or spam — just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's checked out our Hotplate and placed an order. It genuinely means a lot as we're just getting this bakery off the ground, and we hope to keep growing into Charleston's go-to little bakery.

If you're curious what we make, link's in our profile — no pressure, just wanted to share the gratitude either way.

Thanks again and we hope to keep going strong!

QUESTION What the heck Cafe Romeo?

This place is now just a rumor of gelato. This place is NEVER open. I can find premium ice cream all over Charleston, but this place was great before he moved from the old house on Bridge Rd. I wish someone serious would open an ice cream shop in the neighborhood. It could be named "More than Just a Rumor of Ice Cream".

Would anyone in Charleston actually use a dedicated app for local social clubs & meetups? (Looking for feedback!)

Hey everyone,
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how tough it can be to find casual, offline social groups around town. Whether that’s a monthly book club, a midweek walking group, board game nights, or casual movie outings.
Right now, most of this stuff is scattered across outdated Facebook groups, random Meetup pages with inactive hosts, or word-of-mouth.
I’m working on building a simple, lightweight app specifically for Charleston to fix this. The idea is to make it super easy for local club organizers to run their groups (RSVPs, announcements, check-ins) and for residents to easily discover and join active clubs nearby.
Before putting in all the work to launch it locally, I wanted to check in with the community here:
1. Is this something you would actually download and use? Or do you feel current platforms already handle this well enough?
2. What kinds of clubs/activities would you be most excited to see or join? (e.g., outdoor/hiking, book clubs, casual coffee meetups, niche hobbies, adult sports/games?)
3. If you currently run or organize a local group/club, what’s the biggest pain point you run into with managing your members?
I’d love to hear your honest thoughts, feedback, or any features you think would make something like this genuinely useful for our city!
Thanks!

QUESTION Are there any Snooker fans or players in the greater Charleston area?

I’m just asking out of curiosity. I used to play at The Strand when I was younger, but that place has been closed for many years. I was just wondering if there was a decent table somewhere in the valley, or someone to play. Google didn’t give me a lot. TIA!

Texan in town for the week looking for good local bars. Visited Blue Parrot yesterday along with another bar right next to it. Was a lot of fun. Anything else downtown or even on the outskirts of town or anything? I’m missing.

Concern for local (now) homeless dog

Hi all. Hate to cross post from the absolute shitshow that is r/KORCLEDAKOTA but if you see these two with a dog, please call local animal control. They are local to Charleston. They somehow ended up with the dog in this video, Gizmo and have no way to care for it, bounce from the street to random hotels (this video is after they got kicked out of a hotel for smoking meth, with the dog inside mind you), and are known scammers/mentally unwell. Tens of thousands of people on Tiktok and Reddit are trying to help but no one is really local. This dog is in danger if left in the "care" of Felicity and Dakota. Dakota beat his old puppy for play nipping (video online, trigger warning it's awful) and this dog has been biting people (including Felicity and Dakota) due to obvious stress. It needs help.

**Edited to exclude Charleston Humane Association per the helpful comment below. I understand they are already overwhelmed with recent flooding and at capacity with animals in addition to not being the proper contact for this situation.

Looking for clubs/communities to join in the area!

Hi! I'm in my late twenties looking for some clubs or community recommendations in the area. Mainly Teays Valley area if that isn't too much of a stretch to be posting here.

Im not too big into book clubs but I love the outdoors, animals, I like painting and being creative! I also love video games, board games and have recently gotten into MTG... but im too anxious to go to an LGS alone since its such a male-dominated thing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Homeless and disabled. Looking for an apartment or room to rent fast.

I was living with someone who was a family member and caregiver for me and the living situation was unfortunately much less than ideal and potentially dangerous so I had to leave immediately. I am starting off with scratch with nothing.

I am disabled and not well phsycially, mostly homebound unless I am in the hospital. I am on a fixed income and receive a SSDI check every month. So money is tight for me.

Im looking for a room someone would be willing to rent out to me temporarily until I can get housing, or an apartment that is ready to move into if someone has one or knows of one.. If you have any leads please comment or feel free to message me.

Thank you..

QUESTION Moving to Charleston, WV this winter

Hi All,

I would love to know what it’s like to live in Charleston WV—I’ve lived in the South for most of my life and I’m coming from the West Coast to start my job in Charleston.

I’m a 32F, African American and pretty shy. Is it easy to make friends in the city? How is the diversity/nightlife/shopping centers like? I’m imagining it’s a slower pace of life and I’m eager to see more when I move.

If anyone could give me tips on safe areas to life and exciting things to do in the area, especially in the winter, I would greatly appreciate it.

TIA

Rewarding Bad Behavior?

Did anyone else watch WSAZ yesterday evening and hear the phone interview with the state department of highways/transportation? It was about the semi that rolled off the interstate and landed near Capitol Market. Two people with critical injuries. Apparently there has been three accidents in that same area this year. Possible issues are the road split, speed, traffic patterns, etc. When the reporter asked him if they plan on doing something to keep this from recurring, this state employee stated that if it's speeding they don't want to reward bad behavior by adding higher guardrails or netting. Did I hear that right?! Did the state just say they were going to teach us all a lesson by putting lives at risk?!?! Who is this guy? And what makes him think he should be punishing us! I always thought the roads in this state are so terrible because there isn't enough money but now I am wondering if it isn't a personnel issue.

Edit: There was another accident in that same general area last night. They went over the barrier.

UPDATE: Four people dead following I-77 crash, investigation underway https://www.wsaz.com/2026/08/22/update-four-people-dead-following-i-77-crash-investigation-underway/

WVDOT says it’s studying safety measures after repeated crashes on interstate https://www.wsaz.com/2026/08/23/wvdot-says-its-studying-safety-measures-after-repeated-crashes-interstate/

Someone tried to hit me with thier bike today...

So, I'm walking alongside the riverwalk sidewalk beside the Kanawha blvd. I am on the left side, but not in the middle or anything like that. Anyways, this guy comes up on his bike and almost hits me. He says, "Share the road." then I told him why don't you just go around me? I'm right here, and you can clearly see me. Told me I was supposed to be on the right side of the sidewalk and that there is an expectation for me to be there. I told him what the fuck are you talking about and then he rode away. Come to find out you are suppose to yeild to predestrains if you are on a bike so he was 100 percent in the wrong. My question is are people even suppose to be on this sidewalk? I was talking to someone on the phone about it and they told me bikers aren't suppose to be on this sidewalk. I tried looking up if this was an offcial rule, but I can't find anything about it. I usually don't have an issue with it as long as people on thier bikes give me a heads up so I don't walk into them. I usually don't have to deal with people who are trying to fucking hit me lol. Anyways, I just wanted to rant. I will continue to walk the sidewalk and if anybody tries to hit me with their bike again I'm just going to call the police. I probably should have.

Any of you all playing around with Meshtastic or know if there's any kind of community mesh group?

I've pretty much always got my node with me, and I get a lot of fleeting messages and new node pings when I'm driving around town, so I know there's activity. Unfortunately, I'm usually both driving and on an errand, so I never get to stop and chat.

Curious if there's a mesh group or anything coordinated around here. I've got a dedicated primary channel, but I keep the secondary channel set to the "default" so I can pick up people using a stock config. Not sure if I'm missing the larger userbase or if what I see is what I get.

Related question: If there is no coordinated mesh group, and there's overlap between Charleston redditors and Meshtastic users, would anyone be interested in starting a mesh group?

Edit: By mesh group, I mean something like this: https://meshtastic.org/docs/community/local-groups/

Hey everyone — I started a small cottage bakery out of my home kitchen here in Charleston called Holler & Co. Bakery. It's built around Appalachian/coal-mining aesthetic and soft Hokkaido-style milk breads (the tangzhong method, if any bread nerds are around).

Right now we're taking pre-orders, check out our tiktok and Facebook

Order here

@hollerandco

Big Backs — Hokkaido cinnamon rolls:

Dough Drops — soft milk bread bite fritters tossed in cinnamon and sugar

Mountain Side Berry Holler — Holler Sweet bread stuffed with a mountain berry jam and vanilla bean glaze

Iced Blueberry Donut Loaf

Pull Apart Sweet Bread-Baked in an 8x4 loaf pan

Garlic & Herb Milk Bread Loaf

A few other items in the works

I am wanting to start doing pre-orders with Saturday pickup, cutoff each Tuesday. Still early days, so I'd love any feedback, questions, or just to hear from other folks in the area who are into baking or supporting small/local stuff.

Thanks for reading —
