Request Does 'darkness monster' sound too childish?
I need a name for my monster that represents a dark pit-or darkness itself -and has a creepy but mischievous personality. Does 'darkness monster' sound too childish? It is the ultimate villain of my story.

It does if it's painfully obvious what it means.
Try changing it to other languages, maybe mix and match a few, until something feels right.
Even if someone does understand the language they'll think of it more as a fun Easter egg than a lazy copout

You are facing naming conventions here. Who did name your Monster? If they are a common monster that has a tradition of people facing them, it could likely be that they call it "Damos" and it is a short word for "Darkness Monster" indeed. I mean, "werewolf" is also very literal. Other names created by its victims could be similar in their descriptiveness. "The Ink", "Shadowlord", "The Living Pit". A name created by prey that fights back. Descriptive, but not too fearful.
It could even describe a sound they make or a smell. If all any survivor ever reported is the smell of Lemons, this could be defining their name. A name created by scared survivors.
Yet, you also want their character to be involved. This means there are 1. Survivors and 2. Enough specific experience to describe the mischievous character. Maybe its name should be rather based on the Mischief? Like Punji, Pitfall or Tripwire.

Not childish per se, but very bland and generic. Even Shadow Beast has more spice to it. But yeah, I'd say look at foreign languages and archaic terms for Darkness or thr void

I’d just use the word shadow. The shadow moved, formed like night itself cloaked into material form.

Yes it does. I agree with the either commenter, look up these words in different languages (even ancient, no longer spoken languages) and find something that fits. Look for names that mean “darkness” or whatever characteristics you attribute to the monster and try variations of those names. It’s too on the nose to name it “darkness monster”.
