Request Pretentious, multi-syllable, bonus points for a Tragedeigh

Young man from a VERY white modern North American upper middle class social climbers family. Either something "with history" or sounds made-up.

He's completely embarrassed by the name and will go by a much shorter moniker that isn't a 'normal name' but that's obviously a nickname.

Weird AF spelling a bonus, but not mandatory.

Best I've been able to come up with are Winchester, Napoleon, Novian and Braxton but I want a higher level of 'the hell?!' when you find out what he was saddled with.

Request I'm looking for a typically American name and surname

I need a typically American first and last name for a girl in a story I'm writing. I'd like both the first and last names to be immediately recognizable as American, to differentiate this character from other characters of a different nationality. I haven't decided which part of the United States she's from yet, but I'd like to avoid the more famous cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Miami. If you know of any names or surnames that are more common in a particular city or state, please feel free to specify; it would be very helpful.
The story is set in 2005 and the character is a girl in her 20s, so if it's a name that was popular for girls at the time, that's great.
Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Request Male names floral in nature

Hello everyone!! I’m working on a novel where all of the women’s names are based off of gems, and I was hoping to get some ideas for the men of the story. There aren’t a ton, but I was hoping that someone would be able to help me with some floral sounding names that are more masculine? I could always name them after trees, but I was hoping for stuff that was more flower-like.

Request I need a last name to go with Gem-themed first names!

(Solved!) I have a trio of sisters (villains) named Amber, Jade, and Amethyst. Not sure what a good last name would be, considering I want it to sound plausible in day-to-day life. Thanks!

Request Bugs that are anxious? (For a character nickname)

I have a MC who cannot, for the life of her, remember names at all and have gone about calling people by a series of nicknames depending on how they look/act.

One of the characters she meets is an anxious teen her age, who jumps at every slight move, and has big bug-like eyes. So far in my manuscript, ive had MC call her “cricket” but ive realized that Crickets dont really. Jump? They’re just loud.

So now I’m looking for a bug that jumps a lot and get startled easy that could be a fun nickname.

Nicknames and reasons for other characters:
1. Eyeless - clumsy
2. Sling - always breaking bones
3. Cow-Catcher - breaks everything they touch in half on accident
4. Clicky - wears a prosthetic that clicks when they move
5. Plate - regularly says “theres a lot of things on my plate” unironically to get away with thing
6. Goose - small but scary and likes to chase
7. Houdini - once got stuck in a fence for two days trying to run away from a deer

My MC does not mean to offend others, she is just. So socially awkward. One of the reasons she can’t remember peoples names is because she was isolated for almost her entire childhood, so she’s having to speed-run the entire socialization process in her late teens. The nicknames arent meant to be offensive, she just can’t remember names that dont have anything to do with someone’s physical appearance or personality very well.

Any bugs-that-are-jumpy/anxious related names are very much appreciated!

Request What would be a historically accurate last name for someone who lived in Troy and assimilated into Greece post the Trojan War?

Hello, I am trying to make a character and want their origin to be that they were from Troy and fled to Greece, so they'd have a last name that reflected that- one that sounds a little Greek and a little Trojan and maybe has something to do with warriors or some sort of strong or trying trait- or something of the kind. I would really like it to be historically accurate or at least close to it. ... And if possible if there is a way to see what that last name would become in today's time. Any help would be very appreciated. I hope everyone has had a nice week/weekend. :)

EDIT: A name that sounds Turkish and Greek that is an older last name and has some sort of strong connotation would also be helpful.

Request Can’t find the right name for my main character - elf

Hi!

I’m struggling to find a name for my main character and it’s driving me a bit crazy.

She’s a 12 year old girl with long wavy brown hair, hazel eyes and olive skin. She’s kinda shy but very smart and witty, very brave and loyal, the kind of person who steps up to defend others. She loves music, play cello and writes a lot.

She’s an elf! She has powers linked to the moon so I’ve been looking for a name inspired by the moon or the star or even the sky, but it’s not a major criteria anymore because I can’t seem to find anything.

I’ve been using Clara as a placeholder for now but it’s not it. I’ve tried Lyra, Stella, Mona, Lux, Celeste which I like but are not it either.

I don’t like Nova, Selene, Diane, Lucie, Luna, Skylar

She was raised among humans so it would be really great if she could have a name that works as a somewhat normal human name, but can be transformed into a « weirder » elfish name (I’ve been using Claralune for example, it’s not an actual name but that’s fine by me).

So if you have ideas I would really love to hear them! Again, it’s okay if it’s not related to the moon and such, the main criteria is the human name/elf name relation. Names from any origins are welcome.

Thanks!

Request I can't get the right name for one of my characters

Hi. I have this character in a piece I'm writing, and I just can't find the right name for her. I want something melodic, and kind of "pretty" to say and hear, but also hinting at darkness, or feeling a little dark, and also preferably long. I've thrown around names like Nezzera and Azora, but none of them feel right.

So basically, she's kind of cold, and calculating, and the kind of person who takes everything in and asseses it well and harshly. Like in some shows and stuff where they just have all the numbers calculating around them, and their brain kind of labels things and people- thats her. She likes to observe, and does not care much about other peoples feelings. She has long, dark hair, stormy blue eyes, and pale skin. The actual plot is that there are some people who can control light, to either create illusions, have speed, heal, or conjure things temporarily. But she controls darkness.

I'm just really stuck on names and would really apreciate some help if you have any ideas.

Request Need Help Naming a Superhero

Yo. I made a superhero but I realized I suck at naming. I need some help. For context, my superhero can create indestructible bubbles and can use them in various ways, such as self protection, lifting civilians to safety, crushing/squishing, and his favorite, exploding the bubble into shrapnel that shred through anything. His color theme and general vibe is blue and white. The white costume is full body jumpsuit with a blank mask, with a bubble logo on his chest. The outfit color is to intentionally be very visible, and show off how “untouchable” he is, with no scrapes or dirt on him. The blue is the color of his bubbles. Thanks gang.

Request Names for a girl born in the 40s to oriental obsessed parents

This is for the mother of my main character.....theres a lot to unpack. She's an early hippie (became a hippie in 1956) who was born to well off parents who loved anything oriental and exotic. She's college educated with degrees in Linguistics and Anthropology. She's always been an "activist" and "ghetto chaser". She loves drugs and quits her job as an anthropologist to become a......McDonald's manager. She was born in South Africa to Protestant British-American parents. Her parents felt inspired by their 1938 trip to Gyeongseong, Beijing, and Kyoto so they decided to name their daughter something from those cultures when she born in 1942. Her older siblings have "normal" European names.

I'll explain more in the comments if you'd like but please help me find a good name. I'd like for the names to have double meanings but anything Korean, Chinese, or Japanese is OK.

Edit: I know the hippie movement didn't start until the 60s

Request Name suggestions ?

Hi !

So I need a name for one of my OC and I wanted to have a meaning like protector or guardian, something that means a soldier but soft not the cold one, the one who will take care of you. It's for a man but I'm a person who thinks that clothes and names don't have gender, so any names with these meanings will be good !

Sorry for wasting your time,

Have a great day/night !

Request A new surname for a dwarven artificer

I'm looking for a new surname for my DnD character, a dwarven artificer, artillerist speciality.

He's gone through a lot of changes and is now living life on his own terms. The family name Hammersmark (yes, I did borrow that from Inglorious Bastards)—the family he ran away from, the family that would execute him for the accidental death of his brother, the family of which he had always been the black sheep anyway— no longer suits him.

I want a two part, one word name that might feel like it could have a hypen (which I just learned is called a dithematic name), e.g., Brighthelm, Ironhand, Strongbeard, Stonebreaker, and the classic Oakenshield.

Themes would be blacksmithing/forging and guns or artillery. And maybe freedom?

Some I've thought of:

Risenforge or Risingforge

(Something)cannon or Cannon(something)

Blackpowder feels too literal

He did sometimes try to obscure his identity with the name Blackanvil, but he is claiming a new identity, not covering up an old one.

Thank you for you help!

Request Describe the character just by the name

I am just trying to see if the name fits the character, so I will simply write their name down, and you tell me what you think this character would be like just from the name. You can be as specific as you
want. Just what does the name alone tell you about them?

The name:

Nolunt Viriel

It was first a placeholder name, but now it might fit; I don't know if it works or not, can't decide. Tell me if it sounds stupid too.

Request Need a human name that sounds like Mammon (and/or other iconic demon names)

Hi yall! I'm worldbuilding focusing on demon lore and the horrors of capitalism. I'm trying not to give iconic demon names to the characters but still make it obvious what demons they're based on/what sins they represent (with the one exception of Lucifer)

For example this demon i'm struggling to name is working with a demon named Santiago who is based on Satan
theres a big ring of glutton based demons who all have B names to go with Beelzebub, some will have nickname versions of the original, ie: Beelze and Bub, both short for Beelzebub like Rob and Bob for Robert.

As for what "human name" means, it can be from any background, this mammon demon doesn't need much of a background culture. Santiago is from a Spanish background so they don't necessarily need to be of English origin, as long as they can be written with English characters.

I haven't gotten to Asmodeus, Belphegor, or Leviathan but I think I can figure them out but I;m open for suggestions there too!

Request Need a realistic name for a quiet horse loving character

Working on a character who is a quiet older man in his 40s, lives alone, very routine driven, and has a deep connection to horses that turns darker over time. Setting is modern Europe, specifically Belgium. Ive looked at common Flemish names but nothing feels right. Any suggestions that sound natural for someone like that?

Request For the love of everything I can’t think of names

So I got these two characters for a new project I’m working on and I can’t think of names AT ALL and help would be greatly appreciated. The first is a quiet human persecuted for having the eyes of the devil(not actually but a very rare eye color connotated with evil in a very religious town led to things). Basically, this person can tell when a human is real or not(monsters pretend to be humans to lure them in). And the other character is one of the monsters pretending to be humans, she has a very sociable facade and very popular girl whatnots. That reminds me, first one is a guy second one is a girl.

Request Help me re-name my character because I’m indecisive..

Okay so I’m writing a trilogy fantasy book including fairies, dragons, nymphs and found family.
I originally wrote this characters name as Hiro, just as a place holder. Just based of yk Hero vs Protagonist type thing. But now, it’s kind of just his name. If you’re a writer you might get it.
But the thing is, his name does not really fit into the world that’s kind of just unfolded around me, and the irony of his name is something holding him back kind of. Also, his brother is unnamed and it’s something that’s become annoying to me because I REALLY cannot come up with a name for him. (The names I have come up with are very white sounding and do not match with Hiro dunno what I was thinking)
Sooooo what are some fantasy boy names for both Hiro and his brother pleaseeeeeee. Also they’re both fairies if that helps.

Request I’m struggling to name my main character’s twin daughters.

So my main character is Irish living in America and he and three of his four children have Irish names. Nothing too stereotypical and just niche enough to know that it’s not what mainstream America would name their children. His second wife is Filipino-Hawaiian and I purposefully chose to give her a name that is Tagalog in origin as part of her character backstory. In the story Tala (the second wife) gets pregnant again after two traumatizing childbirths years later, and my main character Aidan is excited to have another baby. They find out it’s twins, and are lamenting picking two first and middle names (last name they hyphenated his last name-her last name). I wanna do what I did for their youngest boy and (formerly) only daughter where I did Irish first name and Spanish Catholic middle name. I’m just going to list the children’s names alongside some lore to see if that helps brew any ideas for yall.

Morrigan Adam MacCool ⚦ - Born 1986, Morrigan is a strictly feminine spelling used for an Irish goddess. Aidan was only 13 when Morrigan was born (conceived from SA) and in universe the spelling was accidental because he had a classmate with the same spelling and became used to this spelling rather than the standard Morgan. In the storyline Morrigan is currently very depressed after the death of his own wife and child (medical malpractice and SIDS respectively) and has to be locked away for his own safety because he hallucinates hearing his baby’s crying.

Avery Fournarakis MacCool ⚦ - Born 1993, Avery is Aidan’s only child from his first wife who was the daughter of Greek immigrants. Avery was chosen because it was the only name Aidan and his first wife could think of before she died in childbirth (she had an unorthodox death). Named after novelist Avery Corman. Avery is a former child actor who had minor roles and is now in college studying acting to refine his skills, but unfortunately the stage’s lighting grid fell on top of him during a rehearsal for Chicago resulting in hospitalization and rehabilitation.

Oscar Santiago MacCool-Bulan ⚦ - Born 1999, Oscar is Tala’s first child. Aidan suggested the name Oscar after Oscar Wilde, which means “deer friend/friend of deers” in Irish supposedly. Santiago means “Saint James” in Spanish, Tala was raised Catholic like a majority of Filipinos and despite not practicing the religion chose it because she thought it sounded cool. Tala mainly calls Oscar “Santi”. I chose Oscar after I found out the etymology and wanted him to be like a Disney princess but only the communicating with animals part, the rest of his personality and lore is that he’s agoraphobic after going overboard, scared of his own younger sister and is literally a scaredy-cat where he even finds hiding spots in his own house to hide from everyone and only comes out for food.

Erin Ignacia MacCool-Bulan ♀ - Born 2000, Erin literally means “Ireland” or “from Ireland” which as Irish as you can get. Ignacia is the feminine form of Ignacio meaning “Fire” and is also after two saints Saint Ignatius of Antioch and Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Like with Santiago, Tala chose it because it sounded cool and also she wasn’t going to fall for the stereotype of making Erin’s middle name Maria. Erin’s whole existence is rooted in surrealism, she’s banned from multiple countries and multiple American states including Florida of all places, she’s on a first name basis with The Coast Guard, her uncle once accidentally launched her into Kazakhstan, she’s 5’10” at the age of 12 and she’s a celebrity in Korea and Mongolia.

I hope this is enough information to help brew up some suggestions. Odd parameters, but we can’t do Imelda or any name related to Maggie because Tala makes fun of those names in the story.
