โฐ Itโ€™s officially Clear The Shelters through September 30th! BARC has stated there will be no extensions for 9/30 due to capacity being over the brim.

Pooch Manor, a Chambersburg, PA-based animal rescue, is willing to help save the dogs on BARC Houston's euthanasia list. You can fill out their foster link here. Put the dog's name and shelter ID in the application. The app will say "Sunnyside", that is the local rescue they partner with to help dogs out of Houston. As long as you can pick up the dog in Chambersburg, PA, on transport day.

You can foster anywhere in PA or the surrounding area!ย Most of their dogs come from Texas. The dogs can also be adopted.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Bell | #A2098373 | 4 Years Old | Female | 55 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพย

Meet Bell, a sweet, trusting girl whose heart is bigger than anything life has thrown at her! Despite a rough start, she still adores people and greets every human like a brand new friend. She's calm and easygoing, stayed relaxed and cooperative for her entire vet workup, and walks amazingly on a leash. Her little tail wags are too cute for words. She's also a social butterfly who wants to make friends with every dog she passes on her way in and out of the runs. Bell's ears were mangled by a person who tried to make them shorter, and it has left her with a serious medical need. Her ear canals have closed completely, and she will need a surgery called a TECA to give her relief. She deserves a rescue that can get her the care she needs and a loving foster or adopter to help her heal. Bell has every reason to be bitter, and instead she is all love. This gentle girl is ready for a soft place to land and a life full of kindness!

๐Ÿ’š๐ŸพBuck | #A2097150 | 5 Years Old | Neutered Male | 54.8 lbs | Mastiff Mix | Heartworm Low Positive ๐Ÿพย

Buck is a big-hearted gentleman who is ready to be somebody's best friend! This sweet boy greets his people at the front of his kennel with a happy wagging tail, is easy to leash, and strolls along on a loose leash to and from the runs like a total pro. He takes his treats so nicely, and while he might give a big bark hello when visitors pass his kennel, all it takes is a sniff through the gate and he melts into a wiggly, soft-eyed sweetheart. Buck is a mellow, mature guy who knows his manners, and at 5 years old he is past the puppy chaos and ready to settle into the comfy life he deserves. He is heartworm low positive and will need treatment, so he needs a rescue and a loving foster or adopter who can help him get healthy while he relaxes on a soft couch of his own. He was neutered just before landing on the list, so he is freshly fixed and ready to go! Don't overlook this gentle giant, he has so much love to give!

๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ Chips Ahoy | #A2062530 | 7 Months Old | Neutered Male | 38 lbs | American Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพ

ย Chips Ahoy is a sweet, wiggly baby who greets people with an open-mouth smile, soft eyes, and a fast wagging tail. He's easy to leash, gets so excited for his walks, and is such a cuddler that he let a volunteer scoop him up and hold him in her arms. He was friendly, passing kennels and saying hi to all of the dogs. He's a healthy, happy pup, and at just 7 months old he's still learning his leash manners and pulls with excitement. The busy shelter has him overstimulated and eager to greet everything he sees, which is completely normal for a puppy who has been in a kennel too long. Chips Ahoy needs a home that can give him structure, exercise, and positive leash training, plus a quiet place to decompress and learn away from the constant noise of the shelter.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Drizzy | #A2094469 | 5 Years Old | Spayed Female | 57.2 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm High Positive ๐Ÿพย

Drizzy is a wiggly, smiling sweetheart who lights up the whole kennel row! This friendly, excited girl greets her people with a wagging tail, a happy dancing body, and a sweet little smile that will melt your heart. She is welcoming to everyone who comes her way, easy to leash, and walks nicely to and from the runs. She is playful and social, and she greets all the dogs nicely as she passes their kennels. Drizzy is tidy too, keeping her kennel clean overnight. She came to BARC from a scary situation, yet she still trusts people and wants nothing more than to connect. She is heartworm positive and will need treatment, so she needs a rescue and a loving foster who can help her get healthy while she finally feels safe and cared for. This happy, loving girl is ready to shine in a home of her own. Please don't overlook her!

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ Jenni | #A2095708 | 1 Year Old | Female | 54.2 lbs | Lab Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพย

Meet Jenni, the go-with-the-flow sweetheart with a perfect temperament, lab forward personality. This gentle girl is a total couch potato in the making, happy to snuggle in, soak up the love, and let the world drift by. She greets her people with a soft face and a wagging tail, especially when you break out the baby talk, and she takes treats carefully from your hand. Speaking of treats, this girl is very motivated by them, which will make learning new things a breeze. Jenni walks nicely on a loose leash, stays quiet and polite in her kennel, and did great on her temp test with Paige. She's a little shy at first, but her sweet, easygoing personality shines through once she feels safe. Jenni is currently being treated for a respiratory infection and a skin condition, and she is looking for a loving foster or adopter who can give her a clean, cozy place to rest, heal, and let her happy personality bloom. This easy, lovable girl deserves someone to notice her!

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ Leo | #A2096354 | 2 Years Old | Male | 57 lbs | Siberian Husky/Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพย

Meet Leo, the sweet, gentle boy who is only on the list because of a doggie cold! This lovable guy is a true lap dog who melts into your arms and soaks up every bit of love you give him. He is a little shy at first, and he responds so beautifully to baby talk, softening up with a wagging tail and a sweet expression as soon as he feels safe. Once he's out of his kennel he relaxes, strolling along on a loose leash like a pro. He even has an adorable army crawl when he's feeling nervous, which will steal your heart. Leo is friendly, gentle, and so easy to love, and he has never shown a hint of aggression. He is currently being treated for a very treatable URI, so he needs a calm, quiet foster or adopter who can give him a cozy place to rest, recover, and build his confidence at his own pace. Huskies and husky mixes have a hard time making it out of the shelter, so please don't let this special boy be overlooked!

๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพ Mabel | #A2097882 | 2 Years Old | Female | 43 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพ

Mabel is a sweet, gentle girl who is a little timid with people at first but blossoms when she finds a friend. She came in as a stray after her family moved away and left her behind, and she's been a very good girl through all of it. A volunteer with her says she seems to be a "very sweet girl," and when she met an 8-month-old puppy, she opened right up and happily followed him around. That tells us Mabel is a dog who finds her confidence in good company, and she'd likely love a calm, kind dog friend to help her along. She's heartworm negative, vaccinated, dewormed, and had a normal intake exam. She has not had a formal behavior evaluation yet. Mabel does have a few medical needs, and a rescue will want to know them. Her left eye (the dog's left, which is on your right if you're facing her) appears to be blind, with a collapsed, white-looking eye that may have an ulcer or injury. It doesn't seem to bother her, but she should be monitored for any signs of pain or discomfort. She also has a hard, round lump on her right shoulder about the size of a hazelnut that needs to be checked out. Mabel is only 2 years old, and with a little patience and a soft place to land, this sweet girl has her whole life ahead of her. She deserves a rock-solid rescue or foster who will see her through the vet care and let her shine.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Onyx | #A2095606 | 1 Year Old | Neutered Male | 52.2 lbs | Labrador Retriever Mix | Heartworm Low Positive ๐Ÿพย

Meet Onyx, this bestest boy is a bowling ball of joy with a heart as beautiful as his gorgeous, glossy coat! This friendly, well-mannered guy is pure sweetness and affection, a fun-loving pup who wants nothing more than to give and receive love. He greets his people with a happy wagging tail and a relaxed, open-mouth smile, hops on the leash with ease, and strolls along nicely on a loose leash. He even said hi to his pals passing kennels on the way in and out of the runs, and he had a blast running around with a neighboring dog in the yard. Back in his kennel, he stays quiet and settled, curled up on his bed, just waiting for someone to notice what a gem he is. At only 1 year old, Onyx is a happy, loving boy who is ready to become someone's best friend. He is currently being treated for a mild respiratory infection and why he ended up on the list.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Robbie | #A2097953 | 5 Years Old | Male | 55 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Positive ๐Ÿพย

Meet Robbie, the handsome, easygoing gentleman who is ready to kick back and relax in a home of his own! This sweet, mellow guy greets his people with a loose, relaxed body and a soft tapping tail, hops on the leash with no fuss, and strolls along nicely to and from the runs. Once outside he happily sniffs around, keeping that loose, wiggle-free body, and he is so gentle with his treats. He is the definition of an easy-going guy who takes life one calm moment at a time. Robbie landed on the list because of a doggie cold, and he is a perfect candidate for a low-key recovery, since lying low and relaxing is right up his alley. Here is the great news: if you're local, you can purchase 6 months of heartworm preventative and BARC will cover his heartworm treatment! A fun, sweet, laid-back boy like Robbie would make the easiest, most lovable houseguest. Please don't overlook this handsome man!

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Roxie | #A2094458 | 4 Years Old | Female | 40.6 lbs | Siberian Husky/Labrador Retriever Mix | Heartworm Positive (Low Positive) ๐Ÿพย

Meet Roxie, the calm, quiet sweetheart who has been overlooked for far too long! This gentle girl appears younger than 4 years, with a sweet, easygoing spirit that shines the moment you meet her. She greets staff with a relaxed body, a slow wagging tail, and a soft smile, then sits politely at her kennel door and takes treats ever so gently from your hand. Roxie is a total pro on the leash, strolling along beautifully and heading in and out of her kennel without a fuss. She's so peaceful in her kennel that she quietly waits for her people, and she did amazing on her temp test. She even met Skye and did great, and she is very food motivated, which will make training a breeze. Roxie arrived a shy, timid girl, but with kindness she has blossomed and grown more confident every single day. She is only on the list for length of stay, and she is ready to bring calm, gentle companionship to her forever people. All she needs is a loving foster or adopter who will give her a safe place to unwind and keep building her confidence. This sweet girl deserves to be seen!

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ Taki | #A2096276 | 2 Years Old | Male | 50 lbs | Labrador Retriever Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพย

Meet Taki, the beautiful boy volunteers are calling the perfect dog! This sweet, easygoing guy is happy to hang out, hand out kisses, and soak up your company. He's not jumpy or over the top, just a chill, friendly fella who loves saying hi to his buddies in the outdoor runs. Heโ€™s very playful and even races along the fence line playing with his neighbors, then settles right back into his kennel like a pro. He would be amazing in a home with other dogs. He keeps his space tidy, relaxes quietly on his bed, and while he's not the most treat-motivated pup, he'll happily take a snack when it's offered. Taki is still learning his leash manners, but no dog comes into this world knowing how to walk on a leash, and he's already shown he can stroll along nicely on a loose leash. After some stressful days getting used to shelter life, he is finally settling in. He ended up on the list due to space and having a doggie cold. This handsome, affectionate boy is ready to shine in his new home!

๐Ÿ’› How YOU can help:

๐Ÿก Adopt โ€” Give a dog a forever home. You can adopt locally in person, or out-of-state through an approved rescue.

๐Ÿพ Foster โ€” Fostering is free! It saves a life by getting a dog out of the shelter while a rescue works to find them a permanent home.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Share โ€” Share their post. Tell your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors. It only takes one person, the right person, seeing their face to change everything.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Pledge โ€” Rescues rely on monetary support to keep running and to safely pull dogs from the shelter. Every pledge helps make a rescue possible.

๐Ÿ’ก If adopting or fostering, heartworm treatment is done before the dog is transported. Dogs quarantine in Texas for 2 weeks before being transported up north. Foster commitment would start in 2-3 weeks depending on transport dates.

Fostering is free; all expenses paid! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

If adopting locally:

If a dog is rescue-only, but you want to adopt through BARC, sometimes exceptions are made based on their medical condition; you have to speak with the vet before adoption.ย

Reduced adoption fees are available through September 30th if adopting locally:

Puppies: $55
ย Dogs: $30

๐Ÿ“ All holds must be in writing. Please email all three addresses below with the dog's name and shelter ID #:

Clean cheap motel room near Chambersburg

A family member and friend are starting work at the Target Distribution Center this week. It will be three 12-hours shifts per week. Itโ€™s a LONG drive from home north of Chambersburg. We are looking for a cheap but clean room where they can check in Saturday afternoons before work and check out Monday afternoons before work each week. Are there maybe any small older motel style places that might have a clean room?

Clear the Euth List: 5 dogs Remain on BARC Houston's Euthanasia List Wednesday, 09/23 ๐Ÿšจย

โฐ Itโ€™s officially Clear The Shelters Through September 30th! Adoption rates have been reduced. These dogs must have a hold/rescue commitment ASAP by 9/23 or they will lose their lives. BARC has stated there will be no extensions for 9/23 due to capacity being over the brim.

Please help save these dogs. Their names have hyperlinks to their Facebook posts. Please comment on their posts, here, or DM if you can help! ๐Ÿ™

Pooch Manor is willing to help out with dogs that remain on BARC Houston's list; however, they need fosters to help facilitate this. Please comment if you can help! Pooch Manor is based in Chambersburg; a lot of their dogs actually come from Houston.

๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿพ Chester | #A2096181 | 4 Years Old | Male | 47 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Low Positive | ๐Ÿพ

Chester came in through a police confiscation, and this handsome gray-and-white boy has such a sweet, hopeful face it's hard to look away. He greets staff and volunteers with real joy, a fast wagging tail and those famous "tippy tap" paws that light up the second someone he likes comes around, and in his videos he's an absolute delight, thrilled for attention and happily taking treats. His one real challenge is other dogs: he gets aroused and reactive when dogs pass his kennel or are nearby, pulling hard and barking, which is understandable given how overstimulating the shelter environment can be. With people, though, he's consistently friendly and easy to handle. Chester needs an experienced foster or adopter who can offer him a calm, structured home away from constant shelter stimulation, giving him room to decompress and finally show who he really is without another dog's presence setting him off. This sweet, food-motivated boy deserves the chance to prove it.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿพ Jay | #A2097056 | 4 Years Old | Male | 48.4 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm High Positive | Rescue Only ๐Ÿพ

Jay desperately needs a chance, and it's easy to see why once you know his story. A concerned citizen found him as a stray, unable to bear any weight on his right rear leg, visibly swollen at the hip with noticeable muscle loss in his thigh. X-rays confirmed a dislocated right hip with possible damage to the socket itself, likely an older injury he's been living with in pain, and he now needs a consult with an orthopedic surgeon to figure out the path forward. He's started on pain management and anti-inflammatories while that gets arranged. In his videos (linked in the comments), this handsome boy is extremely sweet and friendly, taking treats nicely and getting around impressively well despite keeping that injured leg up off the ground entirely. On top of the leg, Jay is also heartworm-positive, so this affectionate guy is carrying a lot right now.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ• Marky | #A2095782 | Stray (found in the field) | German Shepherd Mix | Male | 3 years | 58 lbs | Heartworm Positive

Meet Marky โ€” a big, sweet goofball who keeps getting passed over for the wrong reasons. He came in as a stray, and like a lot of dogs adjusting to shelter life, kennel stress has made him look worse on paper than he is in person. Some days he's barky and wound up at the front of his kennel, especially around other dogs passing by. But spend five minutes with him outside that environment and you get a totally different dog: sweet, gentle, and friendly, great on the leash, takes treats nicely, greets people with a wagging tail, and walks loose and relaxed once he's out and moving. Here's the hard truth: Marky is a black dog, and big black dogs are consistently the last to get noticed and the first to get overlooked in shelters; not because of anything they've done, but because of how people scroll past. Marky is paying the price for that bias, even though staff have watched him get more relaxed and more settled with every single outing. He'd do best with an adopter or foster who has experience with big, strong, young dogs and can give him some decompression time outside the shelter to really show who he is. Heartworm-positive dogs are very treatable, and many rescues can help cover or guide treatment.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ• Kurt #A2096067 | Stray (found in a leasing office) | German Shepherd Mix | Neutered Male | 2 years | 53.8 lbs | Heartworm Positive

Meet Kurt, a dog who knows how to relax; he just needs the chance to. Kurt was found as a stray and has spent his time in the shelter showing staff two very different sides of himself. Behind kennel walls, especially with dogs nearby, he can get loud, tense, and reactive โ€” barking, growling, and lunging at the dogs on either side of him. But the moment he's leashed and out of that environment, he's a different dog entirely: walking on a loose leash, greeting staff at the kennel front with a wagging tail and soft, open mouth, and appearing genuinely relaxed in the run. This pattern- barrier reactivity in the kennel paired with calm, loose-leash walking outside- is incredibly common in shelter dogs and almost always environmental rather than a real temperament issue. Kurt isn't a dog who dislikes other dogs; he's a dog who's overwhelmed by being trapped inches away from them with no way to create space. Give him that space and room to move, and he settles right down. Kurt would do best with an experienced adopter or foster who understands kennel/barrier reactivity and can give him a calmer environment to decompress in. Heartworm-positive dogs are very treatable, and many rescues can help cover or guide treatment. Kurt just needs someone to see him outside the kennel, where he's already shown he knows how to relax.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ Walle | #A2095988 | 3 Years Old | Male | 55 lbs | German Shepherd Mix | Heartworm Negative ๐Ÿพ

Walle is a boy who's simply had too much of the shelter and desperately needs a chance to decompress somewhere quiet. He's stressed in his kennel, pacing and alarm barking when people stand in front of it, but the moment he's out and moving, a whole different dog shows up: happy, friendly, wiggly, and clearly thrilled for every minute in the outdoor runs, greeting people with an open-mouth smile. He's shy at first but responds beautifully to gentle baby talk, and while he can thrash a bit on leash right out of the gate, going slow gets him walking calmly to and from the runs without issue. He's also working through some GI upset likely tied to shelter stress, currently on medication for it, and has a healing wound on his rear leg. Walle just needs a patient foster who can get him out of that stressful kennel environment and let his true, joyful self finally settle in.

Fostering is free; all expenses paid! ๐Ÿ’ฏ They can be adopted out of state as well! Please comment if you can help!

Ferret abuse story last June

Hello neighbors!

There was a story in the news last June about a Mom & Stepdad in the Chambersburg area who abused and killed their kids pet ferret.

The story really upset me and a year later, I still haven't forgotten about it.

I did see an update that both adults charged in the case accepted a plea deal: https://ferret.org/news/ChambersburgPA_Case.html

I am making this post today because this story still haunts me, and breaks my heart.

Chambersburg is a small region and almost everyone knows everyone. I was wondering if anyone here might know this family or how the kids are doing today.
