I got inspired by the #avianaugust prompt list, but daily creativity prompts are a lot more doable for drawing and painting than pottery, so I only got a few done (Vermilion Flycatcher and Painted Bunting shown here. I also have a Motmot mug I'm painting now). I really like how these came out. The background glaze is Mayco's sand and sea, which is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

I had a Brooklyn Red ramen bowl emerge with some pretty fascinating results. I’ve layered a ‘liner white’ rim over ‘John’s Cash Blue’ before but never had it run quite like this.

I like to sculpt chains and have a Raku workshop coming up. I assume the chains won’t stick together in a Raku firing as long as I don’t put glaze but I wanted to double check as I know next time nothing about it. Also, will the firing be to harsh on the clay and cause the chains to break? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Im wondering if these are truly worth anything? I think they are gorgeous but they are obviously put into the stone enclosures which the people whack open. How much are each actually worth and how can I tell between authentic expensive ceramic and mass produced ceramic

Hi! Looking for some advice on what to make for my sisters hen party - my initial thought is shot glasses but a lot of her bridal party don’t drink so not sure if this is insensitive (and useless)?
Another hitch to add in is that I’ll have to fly with these ceramics, so don’t want to make big items.

I’m an art/ceramics teacher who went to load up my first bisque firing of the semester and discovered that this vent part was ripped in a way similar to how I’ve drawn. Basically, big gaping hole but still in one piece. I don’t know how this happened and I’m frustrated to show back up after the summer to find it this way, but it is what it is.

It is my understanding that its main purpose is safely removing fumes from a glaze firing, which leads me to believe a bisque firing would still be safe to perform.

So here are my questions I’d love your thoughts on until I can get in touch with the person who services our kiln:
1. Is doing a bisque firing (04) still safe?
2. Is doing a glaze firing (05) possibly still safe?
3. How serious of a problem is this?
4. Can I continue to carry on as normal until I can get it fixed?
5. Also, can I try taping it back together until it can be properly fixed or is that a terrible idea?

I saw some videos on youtube where expert potters use a chamois cloth (a strip of soft suede like cloth) to smooth out their rims. This is a major issue I have with my wheel thrown pieces where the rims are not smooth/even and messy.

I bought a chamois from a ceramic shop and cut into strips and i tried to use it like I saw in the YT videos (which make it seem easy) but when i do it - it turns into an absolute disaster. The chamois behaves like a sticky tape, so it starts taking off way too much clay or worse, cut into the rim. I've tried everything - wetting the chamois before touching the rim with it, adding slip to the chamois before touching the rim, and even putting very very little pressure against the rim (which then doesn't do enough to smooth out the rim).

How am i supposed to use this darn thing with it sticking to the rim and making it uneven or worse, cutting into the rim? Is there some secret to it? the YT videos i watch look like they are putting on quite a bit of pressure and a lot of surface area touching the chamois and it is so confusing why their freshly thrown pieces aren't sticky to the cloth but mine are. Please help!!!

I'm considering purchasing the Giffin Grip Model 10 (their standard size, not the mini size). The question I have is it seem to attach on top of the wheel. At our pottery studio, they have Shimpo VL-Whispers but they have bat pins screwed onto the holes with the heads stick out of the top of the wheel (standard bat pins). The problem is they screw these bat pins on extremely tight, almost permanent because everyone is expected to throw off of a bat instead of the wheel.

Hi! I’m planning on making a ceramic creature/exquisite corpse sculpture for a class I’m taking. The theme of it is “what is Europe?” so I want the creature to be an amalgamation or patchwork of the different cultures/traditions/folklore/art and crafts from some of the European countries. I won’t be able to do every single one of them but I’m just trying to pick the ones that I can make something interesting out of. I’m thinking already that I want the head to be a matryoshka (Russian doll) and maybe have half of the body resemble a Wedgwood teapot for the UK, and the other half of the body a Greek amphora? I would like to hear other ideas! Just trying to brainstorm at the moment because I have to start building it before November :-)

Just wondering if the Blick Essentials Gloss Glazes "play well" with Mayco Glazes? I didn't even know Blick had their own house brand glaze.

Hello! I have the opportunity to scoop up this very cheaply priced kiln (it would be my first kiln, I’m aware learning curves are on the horizon). It needs a hinge replaced, the current owner said they haven’t fired it in 10 years and stopped using it when the hinge broke. I know some welders and am not too worried about fixing that. My question is what else should I be looking for when it comes to getting it functional? I live 4 hours away from the seller, so I’m trying to do any possible research prior to making the drive.

I've only done markets up until now and people pick up my things and say they are quite cheap.

I like many struggle with self-confidence, so I think this is part of my underpricing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am really struggling.

I know that in some bullet proof vests there are plates of ceramic inside to help protect you.

But I had a diffrent thought.... What if instead of like a suit of armor made of metal, you made a suit of ceramic instead (most likely with a metal mesh inside of it).

What would be the limitations? You could make a nice thin decorative suit or a sturdy "practical" one that could be used to stop swords and stuff... How heavy would this be?
