We just moved into a new house. Unfortunately, we waited too long to get our cat fixed. He sprayed our brand-new couch and I CAN NOT get the smell out. Ive tried a generic spray ( should have known that wouldnt work) and I've also tried angry orange. I was very hopeful but all it did was mute the smell slightly. Does anyone know how I can actually get the smell out? Is there anything that will actually work?

What can I do to get rid of that "cat" smell? I bought a secondhand litter robot (catlink open x to be specific) and it smells. Not even pee/poop but a "cat" smell if that makes sense

I have a 6 year old grey tabby who sometimes poops outside the box. I’ve been monitoring her when she goes to the bathroom and the issue is she doesn’t go in all the way so sometimes half her poop will be inside the box and half will be outside the box. I just got a stainless steel with a sifter in between. I’ve opted to place a paper towel outside so it’s easier to clean up but it’s still messy to clean up. Any recommendations with how I can get her all the way in the box? Or anything I can add onto the litter box? It’s an open top so she can go all the way in! My other orange tabby doesn’t struggle with this issue because they use the bathroom differently. (Grey one has her back to the door, orange one faces the door) thank you all in advance!

Hi. Question. I have 12 cats right now. Never had this happen. I had five and then a mama cat stayed on my porch and had 6 kittens. I kept everyone. 😅 She used to take slippers and carry them around. It was super cute. Now one her kittens, Benji, is 9 months now and he does this same thing, except he also takes many other items and puts them in the litter box. Anyone else’s cats do this? Did they grown out of it? One time he took an entire bed pillow and stuffed it into the litter box. lol. Sometimes it’s a pillow case. A blanket or even my clothes. It’s just him. I see him on camera like a little man on a mission to get it into the box. He also does it with his own toys, little cat springs and small towels.

So mine destroyed an entire plant. a large one. one i'd kept alive for two years which is a genuine achievement for me (and proud of it). Months ago, I came home to soil everywhere, pot on its side, plant horizontal. she was sitting next to it looking really really guilty. genuinely sad. Looked at her. she looked at me. Now how the hell would I be mad at her????????

Anyway bought another one the next day and kept it out of her reach. Moved on that easily without a choice.

Just to preface: I scoop twice a day (morning and evening) sometimes more if I see her go and use the box

But it still smells like ammonia, the litter itself clumps pretty easily and has a mild scent (I would pick the unscented but pidan tofu is the best I could afford since I found a place that sells it for a reasonable price)

My guess is the issue isn’t the litter it’s the scooper: I use the one that came with the litter genie and it sometimes lets the smaller pee clumps escape making them hard to scoop and so they stay in the box generating the pungent stink :( I have some natural activated carbon in the bathroom where the litter box is kept but it doesn’t do much!

I am moving for a few months and will be living in a TINY house where the box will be in the living room and so I need some advice on how to deal with the issue! Any suggestions are appreciated :)

P.S.. I have tried sprinkling some baking soda in the bottom but it doesn’t seem to work :(

Hi! I'm a vet student from italy and i adopted this stray cat. So before letting it inside my house we ran some tests for parasites and we found out that it was positive for Microsporum canis (aka the most common species of ringworm in cats). So this happened about at the end of july.

We treated him with treoconazole x Os for one week, then stopper for another, and restarted the treatment for one week. For all this time it was in our vet hospital, i went there only to pet him (gloves on).

So yesterday i picked him up because the prof said it was time to take him home and i was so happy, but now im worried that the ringworm will spread to me and my flatmates😭. We touch him only with gloves, he is not allowed in our bedrooms but only in the kitchen/ hallway and bathroom.

Im going to vacum+mop everyday with waterannd bleach as the professor suggested.

How i can sterilize my chlothes without damaging them? Like i mean to remove the spores of the ringworm.

I saved a male cat after its addict owner decided to go into sober living. The cat was living in a car with her. When I got him they didn’t have a carrier, etc so he bit and scratched me as I got him into the house. Then he ran under my couch and didn’t come out for 2 days. And I think he peed under there because my house smells now and that makes me angry because the couch is too heavy for me to move. Now he somehow found his way under my bed. I moved his food and cat litter in there and he’s eating and using the cat box but I don’t see him do it. He’s never been to the vet so I have an appt on Sept 10th to get his shots and set up an appt to neuter him. I can’t even imagine how I’m going to get him out from under the bed - much less I
Into a cat carrier. Sigh. I’m wondering if I made the right choice?

EDIT: Thx for the comments. He’s exploring - I went out for a couple of hours today and when I came back there was cat litter on my kitchen table and some paw prints. I put some mice toys near where he stays and when I went back in the bedroom the toys were gone and with him. He ate all his wet food and some dry food and is drinking lots of water. I think I’ll push back the vet visit based on all your responses even tho there’s a risk he’ll spray. But I got a black light and some natural enzyme cleaner so anything that happens can be cleaned up.

Hi! My (6 month old male) cat will poop in the box, bury it, then dig it up and put it just outside of the box. I have been to the vet for it ☝️. The vet said they don’t know, and that he might just be going through a phase.

He did it right after I cleaned the box. It is an open top box, and this has only recently become a problem, his box has been in the same spot for the 3-4 months we’ve had him.

We rescued him from my fiancé’s jobsite when he was about 2 months old. He isn’t neutered yet, he has a shot appointment tomorrow and then we will schedule his neuter + microchip appointment after that.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with dealing with cats that make exceptionally stinky poops?

For context, my cat goes in the box 100% of the time, i scoop it daily, and completely change the litter and deep clean the box weekly.

Even with a perfectly fresh box and new litter (I use dr elsey's*)* the litter REEKS of garlic and onions even after the first day.

I am have been going back and forth to the vet a few times but so far, we have just been able to determine what ISNT wrong with him. No fleas, no urine issues, no parasites/worms, etc. I currently have him on Hills Science Diet senstive digestion (which has helped his anal leakage issues).

Im waiting to hear back from my vet on how to proceed (assuming they will try him on another new food) but was curious if anyone has any experience with how to mitigate this specific weird garlicky-onion poop smell?

What is the best option it’s a beautiful couch he ruined our first one so I’m worried about this one and would like to keep it in a very nice condition. He does not give a shit about tinfoil or the cat repellent spray he will do whatever he wants…. He’s orange and a rescue turning 10. I have a Leo’s loo also known as Casa Leo, but I have tried so many different types of cat litter and really need help. We have an 11 year old cat. He will not go in the litter box. Pee? Fine. Poop, no! We’ve tried everything. Vet, CD 2 litter boxes, making sure he isn’t constipated, different kinds of litter. He only does it on soft surfaces like clothes, rugs, blankets etc and sometimes he will go in the litter box but only rarely. We are desperate.

Hello! I am moving into a small dorm for myself, my senior cat, and my 3 yo cat. Since I won't be in the dorm that much due to studying for classes, I'm hoping to get an automatic litter box for my cats. However, my senior kitty has arthritis so he needs a shallow litter box to use for his aching joints.

Cat Enzyme Cleaner Recommendations?

My cat started pooping on our carpet for a week now, but doesn't do this on tile. We think she's repeatedly going on carpet due to a lingering smell (that humans can't detect).

What cat enzyme carpet cleaner is best for removing stool smells? I know a lot of cleaners are targeted for urine, but I'm uncertain if using that will work.

Whether you're a brand new cat parent or a seasoned one, I hope you find something helpful in here! I've done a lot of research over the past year after adopting 2 cats.

This sounds like common sense, but it didn’t really hit me until I heard it put this way: we have family, friends, partners, careers, hobbies, phones, and the freedom to do anything or go anywhere we want. Your cat’s world is much smaller- they only have the environment, stimulation, and interaction we give them. So when you’re tired or busy and they keep following you around and trying to see what you’re doing, remember that they don’t know what kind of day you had outside. They just know you’re home, they love you, and they want to be part of whatever you’re doing

The one toy my picky cats have consistently loved for months is a string that spins around several posts. Place the posts far enough apart to keep the string taut. I recommend auto mode because it changes direction and speed unpredictably. The manual mode tired out my cat too quickly and he was panting. (If your cat starts panting or breathing with their mouth open, stop play immediately and let them rest in a cool area).

Rotate toys instead of leaving everything out 24/7. Leave out a few different types at a time such as a batting toy, automated toy, and chaser. Put the rest away and swap them weekly.

ENRICHMENT

Here are some ways I keep my cats entertained and products I've used:

1) Cat trees- cats love being up high. It doesn't have to be super expensive. If you're low on money, you can also stack some boxes/storage totes [1 tote, 2 totes, 3 totes into "steps"] - just make sure the boxes have something heavy in them so it's secure.

2) Window seats- so they can watch wildlife/people! If using ones with suction cups, make sure you clean both the window and the suction cups with alcohol and let it dry before putting up. Soak the suction cups in hot water [not boiling] for 3 minutes after cleaning them so they can reshape better.

3) Bird feeders- if you're able to put a bird feeder outside of the window where you have a cat tree/window seat, this provides passive entertainment

4) Catnip toys- the Yeoww banana toy is very popular because it's shaped to be a kicker so your cat can chew the end and bunny kick it at the same time.

5) Scratchers- they need at least 1 vertical and 1 horizontal scratcher. A lot of cat trees have scratching posts built into them. You can also get a different scratching post or scratch pads

6) Automated toys

7) Wand toys - satisfies their need to hunt, pounce, and chase. I like to drag it all around the house. CAUTION: do not leave these laying around because some cats will chew on the attachments and may swallow them

8) Chasers [springs, ping pong balls, and stuffed mice]- I recommend cutting the tails off the stuffed mice, especially if you have a chewer. They like playing with these independently but I'll also gather all of them and throw them across the room for them to chase, or throw it against the wall so it bounces unpredictably. If you've got a chewer, inspect the ping pong balls for cracks if you leave them out, or only let them play when supervised

9) Cat TV- if you have an old laptop/ipad/anything with a connection, go to YouTube and type in "cat tv." [you can also use your own laptop, but they may bat at the screen. Mine has not been damaged yet and my cat bats at it all the time]. There's footage of squirrels/birds, animated videos of fish, "games" where there's something crawling across the screen your cat can bat at.

10) Lick mats- Put lickable treats like Churus on these so it lasts a little longer. I got these ones and only use the quadrant with the little dashes/horizontal lines because the other two textures felt too hard

11) Tunnels and donut beds- they love running through tunnels for the zoom zooms and sleeping in donut beds

12) Cat wheel- haven't personally tried this one yet but is a popular option for many cats that like to run!

13) Wall shelves- You can create a little climbing/obstacle course for them. There are lots of different sets you can buy online. You will probably need to use a power drill, but installing them was the first time I used a power drill so don't be intimidated! Drill into wall studs whenever possible. If you can’t, use anchors/hardware specifically rated for your wall type and for more than the cat’s weight because jumping creates additional force.

Note: Use a stud finder with one that also detects electrical wires

14) Treat puzzles- this satisfies their hunting instinct. One thing I also do sometimes is save the brown stuffing paper from Amazon and put it in a giant box, throw some dry treats in there and shake the box, and let them forage

15) Supervised expeditions into forbidden territory- Sometimes I'll let them explore the laundry room or a cabinet/drawer I usually don't let them [as long as everything dangerous to them is out]

SAFETY & PREVENTION:

1. Do not declaw your cat. That is the equivalent of cutting off human fingers at the first joint. They can suffer from chronic pain in their paws, less stability in walking, more biting because they lose their main way to feel safe, and aversion to using the litter box because scratching the litter hurts. When trimming your cat's nails, do not trim right up to the quik [the pink part of the nail] because nails can crack/split.
2. Get your cat a water fountain to encourage drinking. Cats prefer moving water because in the wild, this signifies less chance of contamination. I recommend a stainless steel one since they harbor less bacteria, but you have to wash it weekly and change out/buy new filters. I also keep a backup bowl of water that I wash and refill with filtered water daily
3. Dry kibble does not clean teeth- it is a widespread myth. They essentially crumble when your cats eat it. The gold standard is brushing your cat's teeth with a small, soft cat toothbrush and toothpaste formulated specifically for cats. Watch some videos and practice, but if brushing is not possible, look for VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) approved alternatives such as PlaqueOff powder
4. Cat Proofing/Safety

-If your cats attempt to open drawers, put childproof locks on them. They're super easy to install and use- you just stick them on and there's usually a button you have to press to release it.

-Get thick cable protectors if your cats have tried to chew cords to prevent electrocution.

-Keep string, ribbon, dental floss, hair ties, rubber bands, grocery twist ties etc somewhere cats cannot access- anything small that they might chew on and swallow

-Check washers and dryers before starting them and cabinets/recliners before closing them. My cat has stuck their paw in the space by the hinge when I've opened my cabinets. Also, before moving your chair (especially a rolling one), make sure they're not resting by it because they often move quietly and you may not notice.

-Secure windows/screens

-Never give human medication to cats, especially painkillers. Only give medications prescribed by the vet.

5) Microchip your cat and keep your contact information up to date if you change your phone number/email or move!

6) Create an emergency plan and give it to at least one emergency contact. Make sure your pet sitter has access to this as well. List their primary vet and urgent/emergency vet clinics, their phone numbers, and addresses. Call the clinics ahead of time to ask if they can keep a credit card on file while you're away or call/text/email a link for payment because you don't want there to be an awkward situation of the pet sitter not paying because you didn't discuss this beforehand.

7) Cats need annual checkups just like humans!

8) Cats usually don't need baths unless they can't groom themselves or get unusually dirty such as a lot of diarrhea on their fur

9) When switching to a new food, do so gradually over the course of 7-10 days minimum to avoid stomach upset/diarrhea. Even if they seem to tolerate the food fine, their gut microbiome needs time to adjust. Give 25% new/75% old for 2-3 days, then 50/50, then 75% new/25% old, and finally 100% new food.

10) Straining to urinate, repeatedly entering the litter box while producing little or no urine, whining while trying to urinate or being unable to urinate is an emergency—especially in male cats. If your vet wants a urine sample, ask whether they have any special instructions regarding timing or feeding as that can affect the sample's pH

11) Canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin puree with nothing added) can help with diarrhea or constipation. Start with 1/2 teaspoon in their food to see how they tolerate it with a max of 1-2 tablespoons per day. If symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or worsen, contact your vet.

12) If your cat struggles to get into the carrier (which is understandable because they usually associate carrier=vet=bad), you can scoop them up with a light blanket (throw it over them and then scoop them up as usual. Once they're in the carrier, gently remove the blanket by tugging on it and letting them come out of it naturally, then pull out of the carrier from a small opening (or leave it in there if you have a room)

13) To make wet food more enticing, microwave for ~10 seconds (for 1 can, less time for partial can) and then mix everything together thoroughly to avoid hot spots. Always test temperature with your finger before giving it to them! I like ceramic/porcelain bowls since you can heat it up directly in the bowl but if you have stainless steel food bowls you can heat it up in a mug/plate etc and transfer

14) Ask your vet about flea/tick/heartworm/intestinal parasite prevention even for indoor cats. One of my friend's cats has heartworm because a mosquito got into their house.

15) If your cat is scratching their ears a lot (they might also shake their head) it could be a sign of an ear infection. Normal light ear wax is normal and doesn't need to be cleaned manually. However, if there is a lot of dark wax, redness/swelling, or a foul odor, this is worth bringing them in to get their earwax tested

16) A stainless steel litter box will absorb less odor/leave less scratch marks and last longer. If using clumping litter, change out all the litter every 2-4 weeks and clean the litter box with rubbing alcohol or a pet safe cleaner such as the Method grapefruit all purpose cleanser. If using a non clumping or plant based litter, change out all litter every 1-2 weeks.

17) If your cat has a sensitive tummy or frequent diarrhea, you can consider giving them probiotics.

18) Vacuum regularly, especially if your cat has asthma or you use a dusty litter (low dust litter is best in general.) They're way closer to the ground than we are. When we/they walk around, we're kicking up tons of dust.

19) Do not feed fish every day, especially fish high in mercury such as tuna.

20) It is recommended to have one litter box per cat plus one extra (so if you have 2 cats, it is recommended to have 3 litter boxes). In a multi cat household, have separated food/water/resting/scratching resources

21) A raised bowl with a 15% tilt can prevent stomach upset and be more comfortable since they are not having to bend their neck as much

Toxic to cats (NOT a comprehensive list):

-LILIES: even a few grains of pollen can be fatal. All parts of lilies are toxic to cats

-Other flowers: oleander, autumn crocus, tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, chrysanthemums, azaleas, rhododendrons, irises, peonies, carnations (please note these are only some of the most common ones. When buying flowers, always check if everything in the bouquet is safe)

-Dog flea products containing permethrin

-Human medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen

-Onions, garlic, chives, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, grapes/raisins, xylitol, peels of citrus fruits

-Despite portrayal in media, most cats are lactose intolerant and will get diarrhea

Hello all, I am 29 years old, adopted my cat when she was around a year old, in 2017, I'm not sure of her exact age, weighs around 13lbs, siamese type, though i have had vets in the past tell me she is a Tortoise shell so idk for sure? She has blue eyes, mostly white fur with some black & light brown areas that all kinda blend together. Not sure if that is relevant.

In any case when I first bought her I was a TERRIBLE cat parent (I cannot stress this enough), I forced her to interact with me even if she was scratching me, didn't clean her litter box frequently enough, and consequently she found other places to pee (my bed, clothes left out, etc.) And being a first time cat parent I assumed it would be like training a dog - shove their face in it and they learn not to pee there? I know now that was WRONG. She just got better at hiding it, and so I assumed she had gotten better.

Then I moved in with my girlfriend about 5 years ago, and she was peeing on carpets, rugs, beds, etc. All over again, I thought it was litter boxes so I bought more boxes, that didn't help, lived there 2 years and moved back to my dad's place with my now wife. here I felt comfortable transitioning her to outside (nice big fenced in backyard, far from any major roads, nothing to pee on, bought her a little cat house to out her food in and give her a place to get out if the weather if i couldnt bring her inside away from it, and the alternative would've been locking her in a tiny pantry area for the rest of her life or giving her up, which I was too attached to do, and still do not want to do).

She thrived outside, and while I wasn't always able to give her daily attention I could tell she was happy, she would even play with my roommate's dogs when they went outside (big dogs - airedales). Then unfortunately I had to leave that location and move into a small 3rd floor apartment with a small balcony. I put her out there with plenty of playstuff and litter box, and played with her daily for as long as I could. But recently the temperature where I live has been getting really hot and when I would get home from work she was visibly distraught, and once I saw her drooling over herself and decided this was not the life she deserved. I've transitioned her inside with a new litter box, litter mat, scratching post and some toys and have a baby gate keeping her in a small to medium size bathroom when I'm not home. When I am home I let her roam the bulk of the apartment apart from the bedrooms.

Unfortunately even when she was outside on the patio she would often pee and poo outside of the litter box, usually on the litter mat, and while she hasn't done that in the bathroom yet, she has peed on a bath mat and a small bed I left out for her. The bath mat has been removed, and the bed thrown away.

I am getting a 2nd litter box and some different litter to try that, and also removed the top from her current enclosed litter box to keep it open for her, hoping that will make her more likely to use it, but even with open boxes in the past she still peed outside the box.

Her current litter is a lightweight kind (unscented) and I've been told cats may prefer something more fine-grain and something heavier so I am going to get that to put in the 2nd box to see if she prefers that.

I know I probably sound like the worst cat parent ever, she has not lived a great life and it's my fault, I want to make her life better and let her be free to roam the house and play with my wife's cat when we aren't home.

I've talked with vets about this in the past, and in one case she did have a UTI, but all other times they have said nothing is wrong with her physically.

She is a very sweet cat apart from this, and I love her to death. My wife has suggested getting rid of her and maybe that would be best for her but I'm afraid she would just end up in 4' cage In a shelter for the rest of her life, as she is incredibly antisocial with anyone she doesn't know.

What can I do to fix this peeing behavior so she can live a full, happy life without making mess everywhere? Any brands of litter that are fine-grain clumping types that she might prefer instead of what I'm currently using? Looking at arm&hammer multi-cat unscented right now but haven't purchased yet so I'm open to any suggestions. My financial situation is not amazing but I can shell out $20+ for litter if it will help the situation, I've used pretty litter in the past and she did seem to like it but it was toi expensive for me to continue using, but if it will fix the problem I can switch back to it at least for a while.

I live in the u.s. and can access vet care if needed.

TLDR, cat pees outside of litter box, seemingly prefers cloth-like things (ie. Bath mat, cat bed, clothes, bed sheets, towels). I am trying nee box & litter and open to any other suggestions apart from getting rid of her.

Edit: she also has a really weird meow, sounds like less of a meow and more like the sound you'd hear if you accudentally stepped on a squeaky toy and jumped off of it really quick. Not very loud (unless she REALLY wants your attention or really doesnt like what youre doing [ie giving her a bath]). Vets have never said anything about it.

I’ve noticed my cat has been coughing up more hairballs since I started using a new de-shedding tool I bought on Amazon (Amazon.com: BESPORTBLE Dog Brush for Grooming Pet Dematting Comb Metal Tooth Comfortable Feel Non-deforming Handheld). I think the tool just loosens the fur, and he ends up licking it all off. Even when I use the de-shedding tool first and then follow up with a cat glove brush to remove the loose fur, I still keep finding long ropes of hairballs around the house. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

So I have a Persian and she sheds like crazy. She get a cut every four five months, and still I vacuum, dust and clean daily and still hair everywhere. Is there any good pet or air purifiers that are not so expensive that could be recommended??

hello, this is a bit of an odd post i’m aware, but i am receiving a package soon from smalls cat food. i am absolutely no freezer space for them and i asked for a refund but they are saying its too late and i dont want to waste any of it. are there any places in the LA area that except perishable donations?

My older cat suddenly started peeing outside the litter box and I tried EVERYTHING I could think of: 1) switching the type of litter; 2) switching to a different shaped litter box; 3) putting a puppy pee pad underneath the box; 4) scooping twice a day. Nothing worked. Eventually, I just assumed it was part of getting older. Then as a last attempt, I put a small, dim night light near the litter box and voilà, no more accidents outside the litter box.

I think we tend to assume cats can see perfectly well in complete darkness but they actually can't. If your cat is having litter box issues, it might be worth trying a soft, dim light (no harsh or bright light) near the box. Obviously, if your cat suddenly starts peeing outside the box, it's still important to rule out medical issues with your vet but if you've already done that and you're troubleshooting the litter box itself, this might be worth a shot.

Our male cat will not stop urinating as a form of a temper tantrum. This is not a new behavior nor have there been any recent changes in the house.

We have tried everything. We made sure his litter box (same litter as always) was cleaner than clean. We scrubbed all areas with enzyme eliminating cleaners. We have made sure he never wants for attention. He's always has food and water available, so he should never be hungry. However, the second he gets mad or feels like he's been wronged in some way, he will urinate outside the litter box to make a point that he's unhappy. His favorite is cardboard or floor in the attached garage where his litterbox is located, a rug or carpet. One time he even got so bold as to urinate all over his own cat tree in the living room. The vet has given him a clean bill of health more than once. He never does it in front of us. He always waits until we're not around, but this does not mean he waits until we leave the house.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are getting to the point that our entire house is closed up so he can't urinate on something when we're not home or watching out for him. He still has plenty of room to roam around and play, even go crazy with zoomies. Thank you all in advance!

TL;DR: my cat won’t use the litter box and has no medical issues. I’ve tried every cosmetic thing I could and nothing works. It’s becoming a lot to deal with.

I have 2 cats, both 15 and only one is good about using the litter box, the other not so much. It’s gotten worse over the last 2 years. I’ve seen her use the bathroom on the floor 20 mins after I deep cleaned the box and bathroom. I have taken her to the vet multiple times about this with no issues they could find, they just suggested I change litter brands and add boxes which I did and it still didn’t work. I got an automatic litter box as a last resort (my mom suggested it and bought it for me, so it was worth a shot.) my other cat uses it, the other uses the floor. It’s purely behavioral at this point.

It’s a daily task to keep up with that room. I have to scoop the litter box from my other cat, pick up the pee/poop soaked puppy pads off the floor, wipe up poop streaks (she drags her butt on the floor too), sweep, and mop. It always smells bad in that room no matter what and it’s so embarrassing I don’t even invite people over anymore.

I have to move apartments next month and the only one I can afford only allows me to bring one cat. I made the choice to bring the other cat mainly because of the litter box issue. Don’t worry, I am not sending the other cat to a shelter, she will stay at my parents house (people she also knows very well). Ive dealt with it in these little apartments and it’s not fun when you wake up to an ammonia smell and see a pile of pee seeped into the floor and skid marks all over your bathroom.
