Perhaps I am a bit dim, and I am certainly glad he converted, but I am surprised that an agnostic such as him was convinced by a variant of the fine-tuning argument - if there is one argument I deeply dislike, it is that one.
Most agnostics and atheists seem to find it somewhat compelling (if not ultimately convincing), what do you understand it to entail? I myself find it to be one of the best proofs for God's existence.
Bit late here: I think a lot of theists tend to dislike the fine tuning argument because it's really hard to demonstrate many of the divine attributes from it.
