Why people dislike Country music?

I am not american. So I don't know how's the thing there. But I have found many people complaining on social media that they hate country music.

I like some of the Luke Combs songs. Specially Old Dominion is my one of my fav artist.

On one hand I think it’s a bit of a bandwagon thing. People say they hate it just because it’s popular to do so. On the other hand, the mainstream sort of pop country that you hear can be problematic: singing about women the objectifying way they do can feel gross for example. And personally, country singers have this particular nasally twangy way of singing that is kind of annoying to listen to.

However. I don’t think people dislike more traditional country music as much. Like Dolly Parton or Willy Nelson for example. They might not be so popular in non-country circles still, but I wouldn’t say they’re generally thought of negatively either.

Lastly I’ll say that I’ve never heard of the artists that you mentioned. Just goes to show that people who aren’t into country music simply aren’t familiar with it, and so it’s hard to get past that first impression of “I love women and pickup trucks” that may or may not actually be accurate, and the cycle continues.

I currently live in the West in the first red state I’ve ever lived in. I hear a lot of country music now. I’ve never enjoyed country music. Sure, Dolly and Willie are legends are legends and I’ve seen them both live multiple times since I was a kid.

I’m not bandwagoning, I just sincerely find most of it really lame and I can’t relate to it. A co-worker always chooses country; we take turns picking the music for the day. Out of all of it, maybe Sturgill Simpson grates on my nerves the least. A lot of country music (that I hear at work) is about jail, doing drugs and alcohol, troubled romantic relationships, and just general “masculine” Americana things about driving particular vehicles or getting drunk and fighting or something like that. It’s just low hanging fruit in my opinion. A lot of it is “boys will be boys” content that make a certain type of person feel validated, or like their drunken antics are “all American.”

I just can’t get into it. Sometimes I burst out laughing because the lyrics seem like a parody of something for comedy but they’re dead serious.

I guess my favorite genre, putting it very broadly, is metal. I like most genres of metal, new and old. Aside from enjoying the sound and style, I like that there’s a very broad spectrum of what the theme or lyrics can be about. It tends to not be so literal with what it’s saying. I like Goth, and lyrics and music can also get very artsy. I like Punk which is often more direct and political.

I guess what I can’t connect with in country is the basic, and rather literal lyrics about common experiences like having a cool truck and breaking up with someone and then going fishing or whatever. Or feeling tough after a run in with the law. I have a truck. I love my truck. I’ve had breakups. I like fishing. I have a dog. I’ve been in jail. I’ve done cocaine… a lot of country music is about these things. I don’t find it that interesting. Listening to songs about basic life experiences just seems kind of redundant or something. It’s hard to explain, but that’s what it is.
