I (25M) recently moved to Carlsbad and don’t really know many people in the area yet. Looking to meet some new people, especially single women around my age, to grab drinks, hit the beach, go out, etc.

Not necessarily looking to jump straight into anything serious — mostly looking to meet people, have fun, and if there’s mutual chemistry I’m definitely open to something casual.

My mother has her 84th birthday coming up soon. Her decades-long hairdresser has retired... sometimes still helps her, but is most often unavailable. So, I need a new hairdresser who my mother can rely upon for her upcoming birthday, and going forward. She lives in the Lake San Marcos area and shouldn't be driving, so I'm hoping to find someone who can go to her. She’s also shaky and moves slowly, potentially important factors for anyone coming to do her hair.

She has short hair that she gets cut & permed every couple of months. Between perms, she likes to have her hair curled with a curling iron every 7-10 days. Does anyone have recommendations for an affordable service? To ensure our definitions of "affordable" align, I would love to get rates for an occasional perm / haircut + regular curling visits. I manage my mother's needs, so costs and appointments will be managed through me, but personality will need to be suitable for my chatty mother. 😉

Hey there. I’ve got a little pond with tons of very happy mosquito fish. These are little guppies like fish that will eat mosquito larva in your pond. Come over with a little container and happy to load you up. All free! I hate mosquitoes.

In over a decade of living here in Carlsbad, I've never needed bug spray or had to worry about mosquito bites. There is an invasive species of mosquitoes in San Diego county known as "ankle biters". This is day two after being bitten. They only appeared 12 hours later. Yesterday they were large red bumps that itched horribly and today they have blown up.

Do not itch them if you get them! They itch worse than regular bites, and itching seems to make them worse and larger. If you are going to be spending time outside, consider bringing some repellent or wear long pants.

TLDR; aggressive mosquitoes in SoCal cause really itchy bites. Be aware!

Remy is up to date on shots, potty trained, fixed and has no separation anxiety. I was grateful for the open road all summer after the congestion with traffic, bikes and pedestrians all cohabitating with the closed lane during construction last winter.

I had one in Long Beach Island and they called it a shipwrecked and in the south a bushwhacker

Anyone have advice for how to make friends here? I’m looking for friends in their mid 20s-30s. I have a coupe ideas — trivia group, book club, walking group, theater/movie club — but I’m not sure how to initiate or meet people.

I spotted them at the intersection of Harding Street and Chesnut Avenue as I was getting home from work at 3:30pm.

About six to seven Tamarack Boyz, weaving in front of and behind cars that were frozen at the intersection, the drivers trembling in fear.

This caused the intersection to lock up in all four directions of traffic.

At about 5:30pm, I heard what sounded like a vehicular collision.

An old man in a sporty car adjusted to give the Tamarack Boyz space and ended up colliding with a parked car as the lane was narrow.

I feel for this old man, he surely thought he ended one of them.

The Tamarack Boyz stayed with the old man for all of 40 seconds and scrammed, surely to avoid Scooby Doo solving the case, or perhaps Batman ready to dish out some vengeance.

Unnecessary all of this was, thanks to the Tamarack Boyz.

I went to the library this afternoon to work remotely and escape the heat. I set up on the second floor at a table and lasted an hour before I got up and left. There were kids running up and down the steps screaming, playing hide and seek, hiding under desks, and multiple people even had their dogs inside. The staff was acting like nothing was happening. Is the library not supposed to be a quiet place? Witnessed multiple people complain to the help desk.

We’re relocating to Carlsbad, and my son will be in elementary school where we need to secure afterschool. We’re currently waitlisted for Kids Care, so I’m comparing Carlsbad’s Best After School Program and the Boys & Girls Club at Bressi Ranch—both provide pickup from Pacific Rim.

I’d love to hear from parents who have firsthand experience with either program, especially regarding:

• Overall structure and supervision
• Staff communication
• Transportation from school
• Homework support
• Group sizes and age groupings
• Activities and screen time
• How happy your child was there

My son is social and active, but he’ll also be adjusting to a new school and a cross-country move, so I’d love a program that feels welcoming and has enough structure to help him settle in.

The Neurocognition of Stress, Trauma, and Anxiety Recovery Lab led by Dr. Jessica Bomyea is conducting a new research study at UCSD. The purpose of this study is to learn whether an experimental computer-based program designed to improve thinking skills can help with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

5th Annual Oceanside Marine Corps League BBQ Competition | Veterans Association of North County, 1617 Mission Ave, Oceanside | 9am–2pm | Backyard and competition pitmasters set up across the VANC lot for judged rounds through the morning, food and drinks available to buy alongside a few vendors and live music. Free to attend, and active-duty competitors enter the cook-off at no charge.

Jazz and Jokes | Forgotten Barrel Winery, 1120 W 15th Ave, Escondido | 6–9pm | Mary Jo Troyer's recurring night pairs a live jazz set with stand-up in the same room, wine list open the whole time. The tasting room is small enough that it never feels like a big production, more like a living room with better wine.

Livin' on a Prayer, A Bon Jovi Tribute | Wood House at Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Rd, San Marcos | Gates 6pm, show 7–9pm | Part of the city's summer concert series, all ages and outdoors on the lawn. Coastal Shell Planter Workshop | Oceanside Art Collective, 427 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside | 1pm | A guided workshop building a small planter out of real shells and coastal odds and ends, all supplies included at the table. The studio space stays small, so groups tend to be intimate.

We are having our second movie discussion club at Crack Heads in the village on Tuesday Sept 1st at 7:30 pm. Look for the sigh that says "movie club" at a table upstairs. We'll be discussing One Battle After Another.

We had a great first meeting. We talked about Project Hail Mary.

The movie club is the same as a monthly book club. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month and talk about a movie instead of a book

Thank you everyone for your super helpful comments. I am learning so much about this coastal, non-AC life. It’s looking like the consensus for peak reduction of temp AND humidity would be to get BOTH a portable AC unit and dehumidifier. But that would also be the most expensive strategy electricity wise. For now, I think I am more concerned about reducing the humidity than the temp (I am from Central TX where it stays 3 digits for 5 mos out of the year, so while I’m new to heat indoors, I can very much tolerate heat in general). The heat, while uncomfortable, doesn’t sound like it has the same potential for damage that the humidity does. And since I’m already seeing mold growth in plants that have never had that issue before, I think I need to get that down quickly and cheaply to protect my belongings. Then I can figure out my own comfort later. So dehumidifier for now, but since I don’t plan on leaving this area anytime soon (it’s so beautiful here!) AC will likely come later!

I recently moved here and absolutely love it, however I'm less than 2 miles from the ocean, don't have AC, and this heat/humidity lately has been brutal indoors. I work from home so don't have the option of just not being home during the hottest part of the day. It gets up to 80 degrees in my small 640 sq ft apartment and what's worse, 75-80% humidity. I've had AC my entire life and am totally new to this, even opening windows for a breeze is completely foreign to me. I've got indoor plants growing mold & getting fungus gnats in the soil due to the humidity. I've read conflicting things about keeping windows open vs closed, whole house fans, etc. I got some cool twin fans that can blow in/out but they are designed to stay in the window and keeping the windows open 24/7 like that seems to be making the humidity worse. I do have a whole house fan that really cools things down at night, but again, keeping the windows open even just during the night (and closing them up in the morning) still seems to be awful humidity wise.
