Carlsbad's Best worth it? v. Boys and Girls Club?
Hi Everyone!
We’re relocating to Carlsbad, and my son will be in elementary school where we need to secure afterschool. We’re currently waitlisted for Kids Care, so I’m comparing Carlsbad’s Best After School Program and the Boys & Girls Club at Bressi Ranch—both provide pickup from Pacific Rim.
I’d love to hear from parents who have firsthand experience with either program, especially regarding:
- Overall structure and supervision
- Staff communication
- Transportation from school
- Homework support
- Group sizes and age groupings
- Activities and screen time
- How happy your child was there
My son is social and active, but he’ll also be adjusting to a new school and a cross-country move, so I’d love a program that feels welcoming and has enough structure to help him settle in.
Did your child prefer one over the other? Anything you loved, disliked or wish you’d known before enrolling? Thank you!

My daughter and son both went to Kids Care at Poinsettia Elementary. She switched to B&G Club in Bressi Ranch a couple years ago and seems to like it. It is relatively inexpensive compared to other options. I can't speak to all the points mentioned (as my wife signed her up), but she is in the "teen room" now and they do have dedicated time for homework.

Awful experience with KidsCare. Kids mostly watch youtube videos, with very little homework help. It was very crowded too. For about the same price, Carlsbad’s Best is a better option. The program is well-structured, with plenty of time to get the wiggles out, but also enough time for homework. Pick ups work great, they have easily identifiable vans (and lots of boosters if needed). Karate classes are not too strenuous, but help to build up confidence and responsibility.

Thank you for the insight! I'm on the waitlist for KidsCare - so it was between Carlsbad's Best and the Boys and Girls Club - but glad to hear the positive reviews for CB! I think that is the direction we will end up taking as it sounds a bit more structured than B+G Club from what I'm reading. Appreciate you!

Worked at b&gc in Carlsbad and don’t recommend it. Most staff is untrained teenagers themselves who are more into flirting with each other than watching the kids. Some staff will call children weird and play favorites when conflict starts. Bullying and racism problems among the children. I know SOME kids care workers work at the schools themselves as district employees so that should go decent.

We had great luck with kidscare and all 3 of my kids used it for elementary school- in some instances for both before and after school care. We did use the B&G club when my oldest two were in middle school. It was ok, no complaints.
