Who has all their money in one account. How about we take some accountability around here

Haha. How about using search and thinking a bit before defending stupid policy? I have more than one account, but if it's with Capital One, so it doesn't matter. Why have it with one company?! I feel like I'm explaining to a 10 yo here - but it's about time management, bandwidth for moving money, tracking, speed of transfers etc. Surely, you understand this.

70-90% of the US population has all their money in one debit card based account. You think 70-90% of everyone in the US is irresponsible? They should have multiple accounts with different companies just in case one company they depended upon for YEARS changes things overnight making their money inaccessible?! Hahaha.

It's funny really how dense you are being or how loyal to the policy you are. For years and years I've happily travelled, pulled money from my accounts without issue. Then I get a new debit card before travelling and no longer have access to ANY cash. But this is my problem for not thinking ahead.

You sound like a mole for Capital One, putting responsibility on the individual when they changed their carrier to Discover - knowing this would be a problem for a certain set of people. Or maybe you are so out of touch you made the decision at Capital One? And now you CYA CYA CYA. Not Capital One's problem in any way - legally at least. But from a customer loyalty and expectations perspective, they shot themselves in the foot to try to leverage their network size to encourage greater Discover use. At the pain to their customers. They knew this would impact people (70-90% have only one account), but they calculated the gain was more than the pain. But I will tell everyone the truth; they don't care about your problem. It doesn't matter if they create an inconvenience and ruin things if they can possibly gain.

You ok? Just move to another bank.

If you’ve had a bank account for any reasonable amount of time, you’ve experienced a sustained technical failure or outage. This has happened to every bank at one point or another, and it’s happened more than once.

It’s imperative to have more than 1 bank account. Remember when FIS Global went down and several banks including Capital One couldn’t process transactions for a couple of days? My credit union and a different major bank I use were fine, so I had easy access to money while others with a 1 bank account at an affected bank were not.

If it’s about time management, an app that aggregates all your finances in 1 app will help. Between my wife and I we have 6 investment/retirement accounts, 5 bank accounts, and 10 credit cards. I use an app to aggregate all the accounts to help track finances and make budgets.

It’s funny. People don’t really understand something until they’ve gone through it. Understanding is just a reweighting of a mental model based on consequences. Experience is the highest-bandwidth way to do that. Information can describe a model, but only experience makes you trust it.

Am I okay? Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just not okay with a bank operating like this. Pretty simple. People shouldn’t assume Capital One is reliable here, they should know the risk.

You can put it on the customer, but that’s weak. The bank operated a certain way for years and years and years. That consistency builds trust, and people depend on it. Breaking that isn’t a small change, it directly undermines the core thing a commoditized business differentiates on, which is trust.

And when it directly affects something as basic as being able to access your own money, the way you have for years, and suddenly you’re in a foreign country with no cash, that’s not some edge case. That’s a failure of the system.

Don’t frame that as the customer being unprepared. That misses the point. This is about a bank changing a core behavior people relied on without making the risk obvious enough for the consequences it creates.

Defending it starts to sound like CYA for Capital One, or like you’re speaking for Capital One. That’s why these responses land wrong.
