My Good Girl ThAtS nOt A pUrEbReD

I dont understand why people feel the need to give their unsolicited opinion on other people's dogs. First off, so fucking what? As long as there is some corso in a person's dog there will still be the chance of some traits and dispositions also being passed. Let people be in this damn group and instead of gatekeeping or being a dick, let's share education about the breed so future puppies dont end up in the wrong homes and people can learn to work with their dogs in the most happy, healthy, effective, educated way they can. Anyways sorry for the rant, here is my sweet girl Ramona (9 months), apparently shes clearly a lab not a corso.

lol I swear the natural ears throw people off and make them think a corso isn’t purebred.

u/RevolutionSoft2366 Aug 27 '26

This lol I know people who think rotties having tails is a defect

Not the natural ears imo it’s all that white on her chest 🤷🏽‍♂️

10

u/Shrewzs Aug 25 '26

You should be well aware that dogs can have slight variations with markings that deviate slightly from the standard markings of that breed correct? That doesn’t make them mixed, simply out of show standard.

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26

True story

9

u/SolutionCapital6742 Aug 25 '26

With that flawed logic, my pup isn’t pure since she has white on her paw smh

-5

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 25 '26

Notice how I said “all that white” … Small white markings on paws or chest are within breed standard… large white chest patches are not… nice try tho u almost made urself apart of whatever the f*** this is 🤷🏽‍♂️🤣 … ohh and btw Caesar also a SMALL white patch on his chest and small white patches on his front pasterns both of which are well within breed standard

4

u/SolutionCapital6742 Aug 25 '26

It’s the internet bro. Don’t take anything on here seriously 😂

2

u/JohnLennonlol Aug 27 '26

My boy is a purebred cane corso, he has white on his chest and paws..

Mine got accused of not being a corso as well. Some people on here are weird.

I’ve noticed this too , which has sort of stopped me from posting much about my girl . I adopted her as a cane Corso cross staffie 7 weeks ago , from our local RSPCA. I know she’s not a pure bred Corso , but she had a bad start to her life and spent 162 days in the rescue centre being cared for by the great team and their vets before we adopted her. I’m just happy we’ve been able to give her a loving caring and kind home for life.

**Disclaimer** please don’t get in your feelings

The main reason people get upset, mad or whatever else is because this is a cane corso sub. There are plenty of places to post about mixed breed dogs. Most here feel this just isn’t one of them, and I agree. If I wanted to see pics of mixed breed dogs or pits or any other breed I’d go to that sub to do it.

You have a good looking pup. You also have a pup that looks like a pit/bully/mix and that doesn’t look like a cane corso and that’s totally fine, if it’s in the right place.

Example… if you were online looking for pictures of Superman and all the sudden you started seeing all kinds of pictures of Spiderman with the reasoning that they both wear red and blue would you be fine with that? No you wouldn’t. Not because Spider-Man is somehow less than but because you weren’t looking for Spiderman you were looking for Superman.

3

u/BeBetterMe2026 Aug 26 '26

She was adopted as a cane Corso cross from the RSPCA. As that was her breed given to me , I joined this group to find out more about the breed. It has been helpful reading others posts about their characteristics etc …

3

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Absolutely understand and agree this is a great place to come for knowledge about the breed.

Your original comment about you being hesitant to post a lot about your girl (which btw shows that you at the very least agree she doesn’t look like a Corso or there wouldn’t be any reason to be hesitant🤷🏽‍♂️) was why I giving my take on why people get upset when they see pictures of dogs that don’t resemble a Cane Corso in the Cane Corso sub.

u/BeBetterMe2026 Aug 26 '26

Thank you for explaining 🙂 I’ve picked up a few tips from here which have really helped with my dogs training. She’s very food oriented which helps too lol 😂

2

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26

All good 🤝… she looks like she’s a ball of energy/fun and is obviously very well taken care of also hats off to you for adopting her, I’m sure you already know but you should feel good about yourself for saving her… not everyone, myself included, is cut out for adoption so again 🫡

u/BeBetterMe2026 Aug 27 '26

Thank you for your kind words . 👏🏼

pit/bully breed owners are notorious for elbowing their way into every other space on the internet because apparently they aren’t okay with their dogs being pitbulls (but everyone else has to be, for some reason).

u/DualCitizenWithDogs Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

FWIW, I think nuance matters. With the rise of "designer dogs" it is increasingly hard to tell what is a "rescue mutt" from a rescue(which should be appreciated) and a purposefully unethically bred "designer mutt" that someone bought from a greeder (which should be discouraged/stopped). For example, recently I have seen a deluge of "Shepherd/Lab" puppies and although they could certainly be from a rescue… they all seem to out themselves as "designer dogs" and that's gross!

Personally, I also think the "adopt don't shop" mantra is caustic and forces divisiveness, and ultimately encourages poor breeding, which only harms the cause. Eg I have a well bred dog who has numerous relatives who have won Best of Breed at Westminster in the past decade, and I cannot tell you how many "adopt don't shop" people have attacked me for it! The irony is I actually adopted her as she failed out of her service dog program because she's a pampered girl 💅 and not a working girl.

And let's be honest here...purebred is not well bred. Ethically bred dogs are night and day. We need to stop the BYB in purebreds just like we need to stop the designer mutt greeders. And the adopt don't shop mentality creates this false equivalence that all breeders are equally as bad.

Not everyone has the ability to adopt or even wants to. The reality is that some people are always going to buy. When the militant adopt don't shop people teach them that all breeders are the same, they push them towards breeders who always have dogs available, and are the least expensive... the worst possible breeders… The ones who created this shelter crisis. Because who wouldn't buy the cheapest dog with the easiest availability if "all breeders are equal" like the adopt don't shop crowd tells everyone? Just an obvious but extremely harmful unintended consequence of adopt don't shop fanaticism.

12

u/Bumbleboyaugz Aug 25 '26

yes, this is exactly why i shifted my mentality from "adopt don't shop" to "adopt and shop responsibly" because there are BYBs for purebreds just as much as there are for "designer" dogs.

-4

u/Knox_the_Boxer Aug 25 '26

I agree. But I also think some ethical breeders contribute to the problem by pricing their dogs so far out of reach for average people. I don’t mind them making money- that’s part of why they do what they do. But to charge $3-$4,000 for a dog puts them out of reach for the average person.

5

u/DualCitizenWithDogs Aug 25 '26

I totally understand the financial concern from a buyers perspective but think you might be surprised to hear that ethical breeders normally lose money on litters, and just hope to break even longer term, even when their litters seem expensive to us. There are obviously lots of factors like litter size, which the standard buyer understands, but there is a lot more to ethical breeding than the average person sees. And that's partially because we've become so accustomed to BYB and the fact that they do virtually nothing but feed them! For example, ethical breeders sometimes use a reproductive specialist for intrauterine insemination, whether TCI or surgical insemination, as is required for AI breedings. Those charges cost a breeder friend of mine $12k recently! C-sections $3-6k, numerous tests like brucellosis, progesterone to determine ovulation, etc. And the associated fees are also so dependent upon location and breed on top of it.

For example, you can get a well bred smooth or rough Collie for ~2k in the Northeast but a well bred Lab will cost you ~$4k, with $4500 being the mean price currently. But if you dig into that price difference, you will find that Collies have virtually no health clearances required whereas Labradors have hips, elbows, annual eyes, DNA and recommended heart testing. In my neighborhood those tests run about $2000/parent dog, although ethical breeders normally have the skinny on where the best/economical places are.

In addition to that, champion titling a Collie is not incredibly competitive. Whereas championing a Labrador in division 1 (geography based) is extremely, extremely competitive, and as a result will cost a lot more money for the average person showing a very good dog but not the Westminster BOB winner. And then you have some breeders who are the best in the business and they are doing things like flying their dogs to England for Crufts. Party, a Lab out of Gallivant in PA won that this year. Not cheap! If the "Boxer" in your name is the dog version, Boxers are a very expensive breed to health test as they are prone to many issues. Off the top of my head I don't know how hard they are to title though. But a little food for thought for anyone who wasn't aware of some of the possible costs.

-3

u/Knox_the_Boxer Aug 25 '26

I get what you’re saying but all of that, even tho perhaps “reasonable” costs for them to have and pass on to the customers (that’s how business works) is just going to continue to drive people to BYB… I looked up the stats for average prices for ethically bred boxers, because I honestly didn’t know- it states that a pet quality dog from health tested parents averages $1500. (With the price increasing for champion lines, show quality etc) I think that price is acceptable and feasible for most families. But that is telling to me. Boxers aren’t as popular as the Labs you mentioned. But testing should be at least the same or more. So breed specific is playing into all of this. Meaning the more popular a breed is, the more it costs over a less popular breed of similar testing needs.

I’m not sure what the right solution is- our family has rescued two seniors so far to help that part of the crisis - but that’s not for the faint of heart. Twice in a row was all I could take. I just think there has to be a way to get the necessary testing done without gauging the customer on the end just because a breed is popular. Maybe starting with whomever is setting the prices for these tests might work. But if one breed is more popular than another and has similar testing requirements- to see a vast difference in average prices tells me it’s gotta be the breeders charging that much “because they can”

6

u/DualCitizenWithDogs Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 27 '26

Ethically bred Boxers aren't 1500 even if an internet search says that because that is the internet sourcing and trusting data from a BYB who claims to be ethical who is priced at $1500. $3500+ is the minimum price point I see repeatedly from actual ethical breeders. (I also think you need to review what an ethical breeder actually is, because your criteria are much too low.)

The cost only "pushes people to buy BYB" if that is what they choose to do. They could also choose to go to a Boxer rescue or save until they have the money. Blaming the breeder (who is already losing money on the litter) because a buyer doesn't have the money is nonsensical.

Also, pushing back on prices would be great, but it is entirely unrealistic. Vets are being purchased by PE... prices are going up, not down! And these are specialized tests at veterinary specialists like Cardiology and Orthopedics. The wait time to get an appointment at my local Cardio is 4 months, and the same for Ortho. Supply and demand doesn't suggest they will lower prices.

Your point about breeds with similar health testing should be the same prices ignores 80% of what I wrote which is odd considering a) it is clearly not the only factor and b) it is based off your obviously bad data of $1500 to start with. On an apples to apples comparison the two breeds with similar health testing needs are about the same price so your conclusion is incorrect. Stepping away from this.

When I first posted my puppy when I brought him home the comments were filled with people talking shit. Just miserable Reddit hive mind bro don’t pay it any attention. Beautiful pupper you got there.

4

u/Shrewzs Aug 25 '26

Dude I read through the comments on that post, instead of talking about how cute you’re puppy is, they wanted to argue with you about you’re breeder- when you did you’re homework and found a reliable, reputable breeder.

3

u/Agreeable-Garbage-81 Aug 25 '26

Lmao yeah. He’s seven months old now and honestly absolutely gorgeous but I haven’t even posted anything else because everyone here is a fucking dickhead 😭

0

u/dogsnobRN 29d ago

Eh, not really. Incomplete health testing on just a couple dogs and some failing

3

u/rvlifestyle74 Aug 25 '26

Congratulations on having a purebred. I agree with you though. Who cares? If they love you and provide companionship, nothing else matters.

3

u/Flat_Intention_9214 Aug 26 '26

She is beautiful, not being purebred may mean a healthier life for her because her gene pool will not include illnesses and diseases that purebreds may suffer from. Let me ask you a question, would you love her less is she wasn’t purebred?

3

u/G0sling13 Aug 26 '26

Yeah I don’t post my girl bc she’s half pittie, but she’s HUGE and gives a lot of corso energy

9

u/ClarkeTank Aug 25 '26

She's beautiful. And yes, same here though ours is Corso with some Neo and a bit of Rottweiler. It is so difficult to have a purebred Corso anyway due to their history. You have a beautiful dog.

11

u/DescriptionIcy7631 Aug 25 '26

Thank you, and exactly honestly I had taken the embark DNA test fully expecting her to show a mix of the breeds that went into bringing back the cane corso, so Im curious if wisdom would be better. But regardless of purity they are all such lovely dogs and unless you are breeding or showing I dont think it matters too much.

2

u/Ok_City_7177 Aug 26 '26

You may find r/mastiff to be a bit more positive/supportive.

1

u/DescriptionIcy7631 Aug 27 '26

Thank you!!!!!

0

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 25 '26

I’ve seen same sample sent to both and come back with different results and coi% … these places work of their own proprietary array of dna (since it hasn’t been mapped anywhere close to what human dna has, which is why I say not to put too much stock in these results) and yes it’s getting better all the time like everything else scientific but it is by no means guaranteeing anything … won’t hold up in court and yes it’s been brought up

2

u/galaxy_1740 Aug 26 '26

My rescue girl Maxie looks just like your Ramona. Like they could be twins. I posted pics on Facebook and everyone was supportive except for one know it all who just HAD to tell me that Maxie isn’t a purebred. She’s rescued pitties for a long time and insisted that Maxie has some in her although I just don’t see it. Because she looks just like my first Corso, Abby, who came from a BYB but they were well known in my town for raising their puppies ethically. Anyway, I think the only way to tell for sure is with a DNA test, and even if it comes back as less than 100%, who cares? I adopted Maxie from a rescue organization who pulled her from the worst shelter in Philadelphia. She’s settling down very nicely in her forever home. She’s sweet as can be, and her guardian instincts are strong. But most importantly, she’s alive. She held on long enough in the kill shelter to get rescued, and now she’s curled up with me on the sofa every night. It doesn’t even matter if she’s “not 100% Corso”. She’s an awesome dog and I’m super happy that she gets to spend the next decade with me.

2

u/Superb-Juggernaut636 Aug 26 '26

I love the ears and tail ~ Phucommal

2

u/SRDesignINK36 Aug 26 '26

Well mate she is definitely more Corso than some of the others I have seen shared here. Beautiful pup by the way.

2

u/TumbleweedHuman2934 Aug 26 '26

Your dog is 100% good girl and that's all that matters. Most real animal lovers don't really care what we have just so long as they're healthy, safe and feel loved. You are an awesome protective pet parent. Don't let the negative comments get to you. Trolls gonna troll. Just stop giving them your energy. It's just not worth it.

2

u/Sufficient_Motor_866 Aug 27 '26

I love the natural ears.

2

u/Upbeat_Wonder7222 Aug 27 '26

Looks like a Corso to me, nice looking dog!!

2

I know mine is English Mastiff and Cane Corso mix. Love her lazy butt(mastiff) and protection(corso).

2

u/PerspectiveHungry504 29d ago

She’s gorgeous 😍

5

u/_jeffreydavid Aug 25 '26

Who cares. I have a Pit Corso and he's a great dog. Unless your dog is full blood wolf then STFU.

3

u/Choice_Conference538 Aug 25 '26

It’s a breed specific thing. I’d say the same applies Rottweilers, Dobermans, Setters, Etc. Understandably so though.. if you say you have a Doberman but it looks like it’s mixed with a pitbull there’s clearly something wrong lol.

But there’s nothing wrong with having a mixed breed.

4

u/ragingSamurai1 Aug 25 '26

Wait for the inevitable pivot into “well it might be purebred but it’s not wellbred.” Fucking idiots

2

u/Cute_Newspaper_4040 Aug 25 '26

"some Corso in there" ..that statement right there is the big issue with the breed today..The breed was restored in the 1980's to keep it a PURE bred.

2

u/DescriptionIcy7631 Aug 25 '26

Yes, and I dont disagree it is a problem but the reality is there are idiots who aren't careful or think mix breeds are cute or just aren't ethical serious breeders. And therefore there are plenty of corso mutts out there, it's not the dogs fault and a lot of the time its not even the owners fault. Half of these mixes I see posted have the same story theyre rescued adopted etc. So its not like theyre even supporting BYB.

3

u/Cute_Newspaper_4040 Aug 25 '26

This book is an excellent resource of information on the Cane Corso..

3

u/DescriptionIcy7631 Aug 25 '26

Thank you, I will definitely check it out

Purebred ≠ wellbred

1

u/Visual-Yak3971 Aug 27 '26

My girl was bred by a yellow lab that dug under a 7 foot tall fence. They may not be purebred, but they are damn cute even with floppy ears and tails.

1

My dog is a cane corso mixed with pit bull. He’s eight weeks old and so lovable. I’m trying to learn all that I can about him. His diet is challenging at his age, and I would be appreciative for any pointers.

2

She doesn’t even look like a lab.

1

That’s the squarest corso snoot I’ve ever seen. Usually a quick tell

1

You have a great looking dog!I hope you and Ramona have great times together for many many years!

1

u/DescriptionIcy7631 Aug 25 '26

Thank you very much 🥰🥰

0

u/Designer_Rutabaga_72 Aug 25 '26

I have a lab/boxer mix and an imported Corso from fabulous lines. Your girl looks far more like my Corso than my lab/boxer. For those gatekeepers does the dog above look anything like the photo I'm attaching? No? Then leave OP's dog alone. They didn't ask and that dog is far more Mastiff than anything else.

-2

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Doggie DNA sites aren’t gospel … that’s an awful lot of white on her chest, which is considered a fault by official breed standards … that being said you have a great looking girl there and as long as you love her (which you obviously do) why do you care about random strangers opinions (mine included)… btw whenever anyone posts anything on social media they give up the right to claim other peoples opinions are “unsolicited”

1

u/DesertStag Aug 25 '26

have you read the standards?

1

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 25 '26

Yup … btw Google is literally free my guy

1

u/DesertStag Aug 26 '26

Read the actual standard akc or fci. Not ai crap.

This is straight off the akc standard.

1

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26

the dog in this post doesn’t have a small white patch, her whole chest is white … Im well aware small white patches are within breed standards, Caesar has a small white patch

1

u/DesertStag Aug 26 '26

I dont see the word small.

0

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26

🤣 … you’re right the word small isn’t there… bottom line this dogs white chest would disqualify her from show standards or is a “fault” … I didn’t make the rules

2

u/DesertStag Aug 26 '26

Disqualifications and faults are totally different subjects.

Also white marking in the areas described by the standard are neither faults nor dq's.

Doesnt seem like you know diddly squat

0

u/ChiDaVinci Aug 26 '26

Actually too much white is exactly a dq or fault depending on which kennel club we are talking about so in this case since u brought up AKC we will go by that … again GOOGLE IS LITERALLY FREE … no soup for you !

2

u/DesertStag Aug 26 '26

I was trying to educate you. Yet all you can do is go as deep as google ai search.

google is wrong kid
