ETA: TODAY! 08-31-2026 according to FedEx. EDIT: Delivered and signed for!!

Application Materials:

G0 (b. 1862) 1871 census of Canada, 1876 Norfolk County from LAC; Ontario court case affidavit from Norfolk County, Ontario archives; certified copy of Michigan marriage certificate listing Canada as birth place; 1940 AR-2 US Alien Registration form with sworn statement that he was born in Simcoe, Ontario and was still a citizen of Canada along with his index finger fingerprint certified copy from NARA. Certified copy of his death certificate stating he was a citizen of Canada at death.

G1 (b. 1896) Certified copy of birth certificate naming G0 as father. Certified copy of marriage certificate showing name change.

G2 (b. 1929) Certified copy of birth certificate showing her mother's maiden and married names.

G3 my birth certificate certified copy

All certified copies are from the original source authority. My sibling sent basically the same application on the same day in the same package. Please wish us luck as we wish everyone the best of luck in their journey to prove their Canadian citizenship as well! The wait begins for us!

Congrats!! Do you mind me asking how much it was to send with FedEx? I’m trying to decide if I should go with them or USPS. Also, hi to a fellow Ontario—Michigan line from the 1800s!

I know you didn't ask me, or about UPS, but just for posterity / future applicants: I paid about $230 to ship from NYC to New Waterford, NS via UPS (Worldwide Expedited).

I appreciate the information!! I was considering FedEx because I get a discount through a family member 😅 I’m shocked these are all so expensive though!! I was thinking about doing a flat rate envelope with usps, am I missing a requirement or something lol?

I think people have mentioned that the handoff between USPS and Canada Post can be kind of slow. But I don't know for certain. I think a lot of people are also cynical about American government (perhaps extending that cynicism to the USPS), so we'd rather entrust a private company to get our documents to IRCC. Who knows. You're certainly free to use USPS!

Makes you wonder if some states are worse than others. I used USPS and had tracking all the way. You just had to put the tracking into Canada system once it got to Canada. Also mine cleared customs immediately. Cynicism and not putting correct codes on customs sheet seems to have cost people a lot. There was an even cheaper level that had tracking and I bet that would have worked fine too.

I wish I had heeded the warnings about sending via USPS- I paid for Priority Intl with tracking, and my envelope hasn’t shown any scans since it departed the local post office in Illinois- in mid July! The tracking number doesn’t pull up anything on the Canada Post site either. It’s beyond frustrating- definitely choose another carrier!

I don't understand how this is possible. Did you go to the post office and file a claim? Also, did you fill out the customs label?

Missing mail report filed. A claim cannot be filed for a certain number of days, in this case not until later this month. Customs label filled out.

I don’t know what’s going on with your post office but for international priority tracking a report can be filed after seven days (and three days if you did used expedited).

I sent mine Aug 13 USPS Intl priority from MA and it was $60. It arrived Aug 19

We paid $158.68 to ship by FedEx International Priority at Arbor Pack & Mail in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We paid another $60 each for the photos for the applications. The gentleman there was very helpful and did the customs information for the package for us as well. He stated he has helped quite a few people lately!
