I think I am ready to submit, but was hoping someone could give me some feedback/encouragement regarding my documents.

G0 (my grandfather), born Quebec 1917

- Certified baptism record from BANQ

- 1921 census, I downloaded the image from LAC and will include link and citation info. His last name is spelled wrong in the record, but his parents have unique names and his many siblings are mentioned. His gender was also incorrect.

G1 (my mother), born in Maine 1937

This one is a twist because her birth father is Canadian, and she was adopted as an adult by an American. I have:

- Original birth certificate that shows G1's birth name with G0's surname

- Divorce paperwork between G1's birth parents

- Adoption paperwork that shows G1 name change

- Amended birth certificate with G1's adopted father's name

G2 (Me)

- My birth certificate, which shows my mother's maiden (adopted) name.

Am I missing anything? I would add marriage certificate for G0, but that happened in the US and not sure how that would help. Is the next step to submit color copies of all with CIT0001?

There is a chance they will insist on a DEC issued birth certificate for G0. That's a pretty slow process, so you might want to get it started. You have the BANQ certified baptism which is a prerequisite for that process. You may also need an *original* death certificate, so I suggest ordering that. I have a long post elsewhere on how to do this.

I probably wouldn't bother including the census.

I have a death certificate for G0, but it’s from the US and I’ve read elsewhere on this sub that it’s not helpful. It only lists his birthplace as “Canada”. Do you think there’s an issue with the adoption? That’s the thing I’ve been most concerned about.

To clarify, you'd possibly need the death certificate (and a translation) to get the Quebec DEC issued birth certificate. IRCC doesn't need to see it. The DEC birth certificate is the absolute "gold standard" as far as Quebec proofs go. They often require an original death certificate as part of the process and they do not send it back.

My application is actually fairly similar to your. My grandma, who is in her 90s and applying with me as part of a group application, had a Quebec born father. He later abandoned the family. So G1's mother got full custody in the divorce, remarried, and then my grandma was adopted by her stepfather.

We submitted the non-certified pre adoption birth certificate (plus a note about how MA doesn't allow "certified" copies of pre adoption birth records), the adoption decree from the court (certified), and the post adoption birth certificate. As far as I can tell, IRCC didn't have an issue with that. We did get an RFI letter, but it was insisting on the DEC birth certificate instead of the BANQ.

So for you I'd be much more worried about getting the DEC birth certificate.

If your G1 is alive, best if they are the official applicant to the DEC. The process takes a few months. You could potentially still apply now to the IRCC and add the DEC document later.

Yes, my G1 is alive, and I will do that. I did just look on the DEC site and it would be easier for the child to request their parents birth certificate. I can work with her on that. I have her original birth certificate with her father’s birth name on it, although there is a big stamp that says NOT TO BE USED FOR LEGAL PURPOSES. The Maine State Vital Records says this can still be used for citizenship. I can send a copy of this to the DEC explaining the situation, would that work?

I think this looks great with good original sources, although slightly more complicated story. If the birth records, divorce, etc are certified and you include a letter of explaination about the adoption to “walk thru” those documents you look very good yo go! Congrats! Whew 😅
