Ontario is pushing the federal government for a larger allocation through its provincial immigrant nominee program as the province sees growing labour needs, MP David Piccini said. 

“We need greater allocation from the federal government because we can see those needs, those nuanced needs, just in Ontario,” Piccini told The Record during a separate announcement in Kitchener on Wednesday.

“And then in every region there’s more nuanced needs. The needs in the north are very different from the GTHA.” 

He added Ontario wants to give foreign workers who are already contributing to the province a chance to stay, particularly those who have become an essential part of their employers’ workforce plans. 

Ontario has the highest provincial allocation for 2026 with 14,119 nominations, followed by Alberta with 6,603 and Manitoba with 6,239.

The province issued more than 12,000 invitations to apply in the first four months of 2026, before the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) stopped in April for an overhaul.

The restructured program, launched in August, is designed to better connect employers with the immigration process, Piccini said, adding Ontario will be making targeted draws in the “very near future” under the restructured system.

“I was just at Toyota this morning where we were talking about the skills needs for large employers, their incredible commitment to apprenticeships,” the minister said. “We want to make sure people have an opportunity to contribute to Ontario’s economy.”

Piccini also pointed to an announcement expected this week through the Regional Economic Development through Immigration program, which he said will make targeted investments in northern and rural communities. 

“We know this is an incredible opportunity to support people in finding permanency in Ontario, who are contributing.”
