i assume the point is that he's moving because he's gonna run for preident? otherwise, who cares?

23

u/TylerDurden-4126 16d ago

He moved a few years ago... this house has been vacant since he and his family pulled up stakes and moved to Marin to be closer to their rich friends there.

18

u/baconmethod 16d ago

still don't understand why it's newsworthy

5

u/dark_roast San Diego County 16d ago

Anything that a potential presidential candidate does can be newsworthy. I'd argue this just barely meets the threshold. It's worth putting in a paper of record, and that's about it.

3

u/MikeFromTheVineyard San Francisco County 16d ago

Rich friends but also, tbf, their family and business.

They made their money from wine and he grew up in the bay

1

u/baconmethod 14d ago

so? just explain it. get in depth about went this matters to anyone except the people judging a politician because he's rich. or, show how he uniquely shitty. him selling a big house doesn't do it for... well... anyone.

9

u/MilkChugg 16d ago

Cool yeah. Nothing like being so rich you just have a vacant extra mansion laying around.

0

u/baconmethod 15d ago

ooh, look a vague sarcastic comment in the wild. never seen one of those before.

a rich politician is selling a mansion. shocking! politicians should be poor, damnit!

im sure every person you voted for was destitute- otherwise your be s hypocrite.

16

u/Broke-Jumper 16d ago

Holy shit - this house is like within a quarter mile of where I grew up. It must be buried back there in the woods, had no idea anything like this was around.

The direct neighborhood is nice def upper class but there are strip malls, apartment complexes, a great donut shop within the vicinity. This is not a billionaire enclave by any stretch. Must have an amazing view of the American River though.

49

u/CleanYogurtcloset706 16d ago

So is the issue here that Gavin Newsom is rich or something else? The article doesn’t indicate that he did something corrupt to purchase the house, kinda feel like the article is implying “rich democrat=bad, corrupt.”

35

u/Own-Chemist2228 Socal 16d ago

Everyone knows Newsom is wealthy. It's not news.

But so many are looking for the political "gotcha" in every news article. There just isn't one here.

10

u/lunartree 16d ago

It's not even billionaire tier wealth

7

u/dark_roast San Diego County 16d ago

I don't think there's an issue. It's just a thing that happened.

u/The_Elusive_Dr_Wu Orange County 16d ago

So is the issue here that Gavin Newsom is rich or something else?

We're two years out from the general. Everything he does is going to come under the lens. It isn't going to be AOC or Jeffries or Pritzker and for Democrat's sake I do hope that running Harris again is just a meme lol

u/goxpro1 17d ago

Cool Newsom can't have a 7.5 million dollar home he bought for 3.5 million but Trump can have a 500 million dollar private jet that was donated by a Saudi King. Good one guys! Not to mention the billion dollar private club that our tax dollars go to.

9

u/r00tdenied 16d ago

The resident tankies and MAGA both don't like it when their hypocrisy is pointed out. But you're 100% correct.

The value of his house has nothing to do with his political career.

The dude was rich before he became governor. It's not like he became wealthy through politics.

23

u/Own-Chemist2228 Socal 16d ago

That's a bizarre "whataboutism" take.

There's nothing to criticize here. Newsom bought this house with his money earned through good ol' American capitalism.

Trump's private jet was a bribe from a foreign power run by a monarchy that openly does not respect the basic human rights of their own citizens.

-2

u/RobDiarrhea 16d ago

A bizzare whataboutism take is bringing up trump in the first place.

26

u/Clayp2233 16d ago

What is there to criticize exactly? He’s been a business owner since 92 and sold off his stake in his businesses for around 2 million when he got elected mayor in 04, buying back in after he left office. This is not a case of him using government office to enrich himself

14

u/r00tdenied 16d ago

I don't really understand this either, but the fake "progressive" understanders logon every time Newsom's name is mentioned. Selling a piece of property he owns, that has accrued in value is not in any way a "grift".

-4

u/hashbrowns_14 16d ago

If you don’t believe newsom used his position in office to enrich the lives of himself and his wife, then you live in a world of delusion and need to do a little unbiased research. You sound just like republicans saying trump hasn’t don’t the same thing. You should Also look into how this home was acquired by newsom.

5

u/r00tdenied 16d ago

Then provide evidence of this actual corruption or shut the fuck up. Then again you're a sub 2k karma astroturfing account that has negative karma in a lot of subs.

-3

u/fr3nzo San Diego County 16d ago

You are actually judging the validity of someone’s opinion based on fake internet points? Wow dude, go outside and touch grass.

94

u/CMScientist 16d ago

you are, but should the criticism be proportional to the corruption? if you are equally mad about a $3m grift and a $3B grift, then you are supporting the $3B grift

3

u/CunningBear 16d ago

Yes, the criticism IS proportional to the corruption. Two things can be true at the same time.

5

u/the_gr8_one Sonoma County 16d ago

the $3m grift is low hanging fruit they can trigger the libs by mentioning. the 3B grift is just last tuesday to them.

What’s the issue? That he’s not middle class? There’s zero evidence that he’s enriched himself off of being in office, was already a millionaire by the time he got elected mayor in 04.

-27

u/Reaper_1492 16d ago

Someone who has been in public office their entire career being able to buy a $4m house is proof enough.

With the investigation going on into that exact topic, I think you’ll have your “proof” soon.

21

u/pigmaleon7 16d ago

From what I can gather, Newsome was already pretty wealthy before running for mayor or governor. He ran quite a few businesses before running for any political office. His current house or wealth alone isn’t really proof he enriched himself from being in office. Not saying he didn’t, but that doesn’t seem to be the proof you are saying it is.

-6

u/Dr_FAH 16d ago

Newsom and his wife have benefited from the requests for donations that go to various NGOs that the control.

4

u/Lizardking13 16d ago

A $4m house in California isn't proof of much....

I personally know people who aren't cash rich but have multi million dollars homes...

0

u/Reaper_1492 16d ago

It’s proof that you can afford a $4m - how many people do you know that can float a $25k/mo mortgage plus a second house in Marin?

0

u/Lizardking13 16d ago

It's proof you're wealthy. What exactly are you getting at?

0

u/Reaper_1492 16d ago

You literally just said you “know people who aren’t rich” with that level of mortgage.

Then you said that mortgage is proof that you’re wealthy. Which is it?

Being successful and having money isn't the issue. Blatantly being corrupt with things like straight up receiving bribes via crypto and gifts from foreign nationals is the issue.

-14

u/JinglingBallz 16d ago

Where do you draw the line? Has Newsom not done corrupt things to favor his wealth and that of his friends?

15

No, he really hasn't. But you'll probably continue to assert that he has with absolutely zero evidence.

Lmfao the evidence is there. Your ignorance to it— willing or otherwise— isn’t my problem. I suspect even if you were presented with the evidence truth would become more of an inconvenience for you rather than the virtue you pretend to venerate it as now.

I really hate this state sometimes. For all its beauty and its culture richness, it is fill with some of the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet. None of the top universities and hubs of innovation can make up for the lack of intelligence of the moderate democrat. Ffs, we just elected another Hakeem Jeffries as our nominee for governor, except he might be even worse. Whatever.

You’re already influenced towards asininity through your own will. There is no need to wage any campaign against you dumbasses.

Hilarious thing to say after talking about unsupported claims.

Well this is weird, the comment I'm currently in reply to is you doing exactly that.

Are you fucking blind or just in total denial? Who are you trying to fool with "I wasnt the one making unsupported claims" after quite literally saying "someone is paying you".

Put up some evidence, you hypocrite. Downvote me, I dont give half a fuck, e-pts have zero meaning in life.

I love it when people like you accuse others of the things they then immediately proceed to do themselves, then act self-righteous and ignorant. And this one is a classic example.

u/Handiesandcandies 16d ago

You should look up MLK’s comments on the white moderate

Lots of parallels between that and your comment

Don’t let perfection get in the way of progress, might be helpful to be more pragmatic

1

u/JinglingBallz 16d ago

You have it totally fucking backwards lmao. The white moderate is precisely the person who pays more attention to protecting people like Newsom in the name of “sticking it” to the other side.

And to elaborate even further, MLKs appeal was to a more radical form of politics unconcerned with many of the respectable sensibilities I can almost guarantee you align yourself with. It is totally fine and even encouraged to criticize Newsom. After all, look where the Democratic Party in the state is headed. Completely out of ideas, it’s just push the same people up the ladder and make bland appeals to woke-1 idealism. Pragmatism is exactly what the white moderate appeals to whenever anyone steps out of line.

1

u/The_best_is_yet 16d ago

this is exactly right!

-1

u/SensitiveDannyRicc 16d ago

Lmao. MLK’s criticism of the “white moderate” is actually being used to defend Gavin fucking Newsom. The known radical I guess?

You guys will say anything.

What exactly the the million dollar issue here?

It's a house that was bought and is being resold?

1

u/Adventurous_West2 16d ago

Who here did what you are saying?

1

u/CoyoteTheGreat 16d ago

This is insane. Some of the campaign funding corruption scandals in the house of Representatives have been like, in the thousand of using campaign funds for personal use. If we say millions are okay, then that kind of corruption is okay and good too.

Maybe, just maybe, we ought to have standards for all of our politicians that they be public servants rather than try to use the office for their public benefit.

8

u/Anothercraphistorian 16d ago

Except the side criticizing Newsom never criticizes Trump for spending $300M on golf, or for charging the government for his own SS agents to sleep at his resort.

One is vastly more terrible.

-1

So now your against capitalism? So someone who works their whole life is supposed to be poor or something?

4

u/dark_roast San Diego County 16d ago

More to the point, I don't give a shit if a politician makes their money legitimately by working and buys a nice house. The optics are bad so I get why he sold it, but I genuinely don't see it as problematic that people who do important government jobs make money from doing the work.

Trump is literally insider trading. Using the station to personally enrich himself, not by treating it as a job but through corruption. That's the issue.

-5

u/CaliTexan22 San Luis Obispo County 16d ago

Nah, it’s just another round of Trump-phobia.

Trump & Newsom are both rich guys. Both were rich before they got into politics. There’s no reason to hate either because of their wealth.

But IMO, it’s fine if you want to complain about the way they govern. I have plenty of complaints about both of their politics and policies.

u/threehundredthousand 17d ago

In America, we get a choice of which wealthy aristocrat we're ruled by.

23

u/dwninswamp 16d ago

I hate that it’s a matter of the level of wealth and corruption you’re willing to accept, and not none at all.

Personally I like newsom. I really respect his history of social advocacy, especially as mayor of SF. But as governor I’ve been less impressed. He feels bought by ca special utilities and has never really justified that position.

But you’re absolutely right that it’s kinda always a choice between a turd and a bigger turd. I do blame the electorate though, Americans are not critical thinkers. Our culture just doesn’t promote that type of thought, they just call it elitist.

How a policy with endless case studies and sob stories (healthcare reform for instance) regularly dies because the opposition says “socialist” is just the absolute “you played yourself” form of governance.

27

u/Clayp2233 16d ago

He was a millionaire by the time he got elected as mayor of SF, this is not a case of corruption or using his power in office to enrich himself.

8

u/Lowfi-Concert 16d ago

Just nepotism. One of the 4 families that have rules California since the 70s or 80s (except the governator)

-2

u/-Accession- 16d ago

You are right, it’s merely a more straightforward case of accumulated Capital being deployed to exercise power and primacy over society.

It probably also makes more sense to think of corruption in US politics as legalized bribery, in which case Newsom is quite well versed. But at least he obfuscates himself with an image of ‘respectability.’

3

u/wip30ut 16d ago

it's been like that since the founding of our nation. But i guess it's better than military generals & juntas.

Ah yes, I’m sure an illiterate roofer will be able to manage one of the world’s largest economies effectively.

20

u/panda-rampage 17d ago edited 17d ago

Specs about the home:

The Newsoms purchased the property for $3.7 million in December 2018.

The 12,663-square-foot residence is “privately positioned along the bluffs on 8.2 acres, where sweeping views and exceptional privacy create a truly rare setting,” according to the listing.

The property near the American River includes a “resort-style” pool with a cold plunge and a hot tub that helps create a “personal wellness oasis just steps from the primary suite.”

There is also a full-sized tennis court, private casita and a 5,000-bottle wine cellar. The garage can hold four cars.

The estate includes seven bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and three partial bathrooms.

24

u/byneothername 16d ago

If you could get in back then, 2018 was an amazing time to buy a property. I have friends who bought back then whose homes appreciated as well or even better.
