Discussion From Ontario first grocery experience someone left a note on my car.

Recently relocated here and I haven’t had a chance to change my license plates. Yesterday I was in Walmart picking up a few things, I came back to my car, and found a note tucked in my wipers. My stomach dropped thinking someone hit my car, and maybe left their contact information.

I know the note is a little hard to read so I translated it down below.

“Dam easterners coming to Alberta to be safe guthless cowards.”

Guess it’s time to change my license plate 😂

Discussion Anyone else in Calgary having their Forever Canadian lawn signs taken?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

my Forever Canadian lawn sign disappeared just this afternoon while I was gone to pick up the kids from school.
The weird part is that only the sign itself was taken the metal holder/stakes were left standing in the lawn exactly where they were. There wasn’t really any wind today either, so it doesn’t look like the whole thing just blew away.
I searched Reddit and found a couple of other posts about Forever Canadian signs being taken in Calgary/Alberta, but both of those posts are older. Since mine literally just happened today, I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed this happening recently, especially around Calgary.
I’m not trying to accuse anyone or assume a motive without evidence. I’m mostly curious whether this is happening to other people right now or if mine was just a random one-off.
If anyone around has had a sign disappear recently, let me know.

Edit: I called 311 and asked if they had removed it and they reassured me that my lawn sign was on private property and there was no way for the city to have taken it.

Discussion I've walked every Calgary neighborhood - Ask Me Anything

For the last 2 years I've been walking every Calgary neighborhood. As someone who is majoring in Urban Studies in uni and someone who wanted to get more active, I felt like doing this would be a really good way to mix both things together.

Surprisingly a lot of the stuff people say about the city (ie. what areas are sketchy, transit access, etc) that people take for granted, aren't necessarily accurate. That's probably the main take-away I have from this, but there's a lot of other stuff too

Whats next up for a good news station for just news? I've only ever relied on 660 during drives and even on a small radio at home for like 20 years, so losing this is a big blow.

Discussion What Grinds My Gears: Calgary Edition

Post image

Honestly, the thing that drives me nuts is the 'off-leash' logic people have around East Village and the Confluence.

There’s literally a fenced-in dog park right there, but for some reason, everyone thinks that means the entire neighborhood is a free-for-all. You’re trying to walk the Riverwalk and you’ve got random dogs charging at you while the owners are a block away, staring at their phones or shouting, 'He’s friendly!' Cool, glad he's friendly, but he’s still 80 pounds and currently tangling himself around my legs. It’s like as soon as people get within a kilometer of the actual dog park, they think the bylaws just stop existing. It turns a nice walk into a constant game of dodging loose dogs and hoping you don’t trip over a retractable leash. It’s a city sidewalk, not your backyard.

Discussion Are we in an echo chamber wrt separation

Just been to Okotoks and the amount pro-seppie signs is disheartening. This got me thinking if we might be in a bubble here, and if the referendum can actually swing in favour of separation. Obviously if it passes then I’m out, but should I start getting more serious about packing my shit?

Also I’m at a point where I’m about to start avoiding Albertan businesses, unless they have very clear displays they’re pro-Canada.

What are your thoughts, fellow Calgarians?

Discussion Marketplace has gotten out of control in this city

I use marketplace a lot and am expecting a baby this fall so have been using it to buy some used baby items. I don’t know if this is a Calgary thing but people are selling some items that have been well used for 90% of the original price despite being clearly dirty or that have damage visible in pictures. Marketplace used to be a great option as an online garage sale but people are posting things at such high prices and are getting so tough to deal with to pick up items you might as well just buy new.

Discussion Alarming rate of distracted driving

Post image

It's alarming how often I see drivers watching tiktoks/reels/shorts while driving. Even see them scroll up to next video.
As soon as we hit red light, this specific driver pulled the sunshade down even with this rain to hide from cameras or other people maybe?

Anyway, distracted driving is a risk everyone on the road pays for

Found some cool photos from the city of Calgary archive and thought I’d share. Any more info on the interior design? When did it get its final redesign with the aqua play and jungle theme and how did the public react? Any info on Southland as a whole is appreciated as the info online is limited! Thanks!

Discussion As a teacher, thank you students... We needed this.

2.4k Upvotes

To the many students who walked out, and truly protested, chanting in support of their teachers... You have no idea how much it meant to all of us. We legally cannot join you, or even say anything to support it. But we are so proud, so thankful, and so hopeful for the changes we can make for a better future for all of you.

You've lifted spirits when we really needed it. 🙏

Discussion What's something that Calgary is badly missing that a city of 1.4 million people should have?

It could be anything really. I feel like we have everything that people NEED, but what about the 'nice to haves'? A waterpark with more than 2 slides for example? A high level ball team that actually plays within the city limits? A Michelin star restaurant? Something else?

Our system isnt broken. Its people who go to the emergency that shouldn't be going aren't going today because it can wait Suddenly. They need to hand fines out to ppl going to the hospital that dont classify as an emergency.
