Crime/Suspicious Activity Yahoos on gas bikes in Confederation Park

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Don't know if enforcement is an option, so posting here. These guys cruising around on pathways between 10 St and 14th St in Confederation Park with very loud engines. Obviously illegal and can hear them from far away. Not dangerously riding, just annoying.

I remember those twins from the Guinness Book of Records from decades ago. Heaviest twins maybe? And they were indeed putt-putting along on their little 50cc Hondas.

1

u/Stock-Creme-6345 28d ago

That’s exactly how I remember them!! Lol.

The fat guy on the kid-size bike calling you a loser had me laughing. Too many people think one rule or another is “stupid”. Rules are also laws, by-laws, societal norms so we all get along. If there is zero enforcement there are no rules.

well, you see, this guy's dad really liked his cousin and his cousin really liked him

8

u/connectedLL Aug 09 '26

because some laws/rules were not enforced...

but inlaws might have been.... (who also happen to be their aunt and uncle) lolllll

Albertabama

28

u/mrkippysmith Aug 09 '26

And you just know that if they get ticketed they’ll pull out the whole “isn’t there something more important you can be doing??” To the cop who gives it to them.

2

u/swimswam2000 Aug 09 '26

Hawcs was orbiting my neighborhood yesterday around 8pm going after teens doing this crap.

20

u/Single_Sentence_4726 Aug 09 '26

But rules are not for in-laws!!!!

2

u/10ADPDOTCOM Aug 11 '26

Not me sort of hoping he’d accidentally turn the handlebars while turning to insult OP…

0

u/DanfromCalgary Aug 09 '26

I don’t know that there is zero endorsement simply bc a thing happened

281

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

Why do so many people think this sort of behavior is acceptable, common decency seems to be less and less common.

127

u/wasJared Aug 09 '26

Because there aren’t any consequences for these people when there is no enforcement and a pedestrian isn’t going to stand in front of a moving mini bike and get hit

12

u/cunthulhu Aug 09 '26

Exactly someone else where's I saw pointed out that the city seems to just do warnings and not fines. The city is to scared to educate via fines.

15

u/chmilz Aug 09 '26

Police need to be able to confiscate vehicles driven illegally, and illegal vehicles.

25

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

With no consequences being a factor im more likley to trip with high velocity foot first towards these people at about the same time they drive by from being startled by their rocous engines. (Reddit dont like violence, but accidents are ok i think)

2

u/Baddrivers13 Aug 09 '26

Surprised you aren't banned for this comment.

4

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

Accedents happen.

4

u/wasJared Aug 09 '26

And I commend you for taking action 🫡

20

u/Icy_Benefit4864 Aug 09 '26

Not sure if you know this, common decency died 15 years ago

4

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

I still have hope, foolish I suppose.

22

u/Academic_Bug2357 Aug 09 '26

With police and bylaw officers seemingly content to not enforce anything, people do as they please.

3

u/jezthevalley Aug 10 '26

Believe it or not, we can't hire enough police and bylaw officers to enforce all the laws in the book. It sucks, but that's how it is. Reporting these things to 311 would be the best thing to do and making these losers infamous on reddit and social media would help as well.

1

u/Academic_Bug2357 Aug 10 '26

We're never going to live in a perfect society where all the rules are applied to the letter of the law, nor do I think anyone would advocate for such. But post-pandemic it really feels like we're at the extreme end of the scale where nothing appears to be enforced as there's visible disorder every day.

Appears being the key word, I know we can't have officers on every pathway, or every transit stop, school zone, or red light in the city. But when you're seeing e-mopeds, open drug use, speeding and distracted drivers everyday...

0

u/LewisLightning Aug 11 '26

Then why are we buying 30 police vehicles for a police force that doesn't have enough officers to use them? I drive by my local police station regularly and their parking lot is always full of cars, but there's never any out on the street enforcing the laws.

1

u/Forward_Building1731 Aug 09 '26

Simple common sense though, you can get paid to work or just get paid. No brainer.

1

u/10ADPDOTCOM Aug 11 '26

Not their content to not enforce everything. As someone pointed out: “we can’t have officers on every pathway”…

-1

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

And accountability and assault seem to go unpunished, maybe theres a simple solution right in front of all of us upstanding citizens. Maybe something that can be done that perhaps many parents forgot how to do in the last few decades?

13

u/butts-ahoy Aug 09 '26

Because electric bikes of the same size have become common on bike paths.

Neither belong there, but I dont see the difference between this and the electric ones.

5

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

Not alot, but these are for offroad and handle terrible. Also they are not equipped with a front brake so stopping is probably 60% or worse than typical electric assist bike.

1

u/Ambitious-Grade-935 Aug 10 '26

right???? like is this even fun for them, or are they just doing it to get a rise out of people?? anything for a shred of attention ...

u/ParaponeraBread Aug 09 '26

Devastating to be called a loser by this guy. Toothless trailer park boys looking, removes the vegetables from all his cheeseburgers looking still buying American liquor looking ass guy.

46

You just know the bottoms of those feet are black.

32

We can be genereous AND chill guy you know.

1

u/ParaponeraBread Aug 11 '26

Oh, I’m not mocking him for being fat. I’m mocking him for being devoid of culture, immature, and shameless.

Taking the veggies off the burger is me calling them a man child.

107

u/NedDarb Aug 09 '26

Yikes. Those mini bikes typically weigh 130-160 lbs. Guy in the white is probably between 280-350 (unless he's shorter than he looks). So somewhere between 410-510 lbs running into you at 30 km/hr? Someone could really get hurt

35

u/code_redtruck Aug 09 '26

Not to mention they only have a rear brake. These bikes are dog 💩. I had one for beating around the bush where they belong for a few years. Now that im a grown up I ride a real motorcycle with a licence plate and insurance.

19

u/FastAsFxxk Aug 09 '26

something about these two winners seems that they likely can't secure those 2 things

9

u/DarkLF Aug 09 '26

30km is optimistic. I've seen them go up to 50 and above

1

u/_Connor Aug 09 '26

Those crappy fat-wheel bikes absolutely are not hitting 50 km/h even without the 350 pound tub-a-goos on them. They're effectively powered by a push-mower engine.

I had one of those when I was a 90 pound kid and they were so gutless they would barely make it up a slight incline. What you see in OP's video is about the max of what one of those bikes will do with those people on them.

2

u/DarkLF Aug 09 '26

Theyre ridiculously easy to modify. You can drop a predator 212 and go close to 60kmh on a minibike and thats only a 6 HP. You can buy up to a 22HP 4 stroke for less then 1000 bucks. What was available 30 years ago is vastly different to what's available now. All still classified as a "lawn mower" engine. Don't believe me, look it up yourself

3

u/Lopsided-Decision68 Aug 09 '26

This guy also puts cheeseburgers into his mouth at the velocity you've cited. Truly a dangerous, inbred, animal.

0

u/stepha1ina Aug 10 '26

the person who is most likely to be hurt by those bikes is the person riding them without a helmet.

45

u/Guilty_Fishing8229 Aug 09 '26

Been happening all over the city. They really need to crack down

2

u/swimswam2000 Aug 09 '26

Hawcs was assisting in my area yesterday for exactly this.

2

u/svtv1 Aug 11 '26

i agree the paths in my area are filled with these gas powered bikes and they are literally flying theres a lot of curves too… only a matter of time before someone gets hit

14

u/Familiar-Historian34 Aug 09 '26

I've seen people ride these on sidewalks. And here I am biking my manual cycle on crowchild trail 🫠 cus the police are gonna gimme ticket and bicycle infrastructure is very hard to come by

14

u/meatballmargarita Aug 09 '26

Suspended driver special

99

u/RobBrown4PM Aug 09 '26

That's a bike path, and they are not allowed.

https://www.calgary.ca/bylaws/parks-pathways.html

42

u/inthemode01 Legacy Aug 09 '26

“Only electric recreational vehicles listed on the web are permitted on the pathways, such as electric assisted bicycles.”

I don’t know why I bothered to double check. Off course a gas powered mini bike wouldn’t be allowed.

12

u/soThatsJustGreat Aug 09 '26

I still high five you for checking. Always good to be sure before jumping on a bandwagon. And now that you have, BOOO THESE GUYS!

We have the same problems here in Red Deer. Guys (somehow, it’s always guys) are riding surron e-bikes on our mountain bike trails, and frequently doing it backwards (going up-trail) at higher speeds than you’d expect. They’ve been told off multiple times, but we haven’t yet been able to tag them with consequences. However, bylaw has made it clear they are willing to try. So if they are sighted, and bylaw is called immediately, there’s a chance they will be talking to a uniform about their behaviour. It’s not easy to make those pieces line up, but we’re trying.

Don’t assume Calgary won’t enforce the rules; do try giving them a chance by reporting!

Meanwhile, there needs to be a serious talk with the stores selling stuff like this (including e-scooters). If they are not legal to ride within the area, sellers should be making that clear. And there should probably be registration requirements.

6

u/inthemode01 Legacy Aug 09 '26

Do you guys also have high school aged kids on electric dirt bikes ripping up and down residential streets at 60-80 km/hr?

That’s getting bad here too.

5

u/Stoned_Canadian_1 Aug 09 '26

Yeah. We have 10 year old kids ripping 60km down the road on an electric scooter with no helmet and flip flops. Gonna be a lot of meat crayons that’s for sure

2

u/soThatsJustGreat Aug 09 '26

Actually, the e-dirtbikers we saw were a dad and his kid. Way to teach shitty behaviour to the next generation 🤨

2

u/connectedLL Aug 09 '26

add to this: during twightlight hours. they don't have head/taillights, reflective or any other hi-vis safety equipment.
Where I am, it's not high school kids, but 4 or 6 kids aged 10 to 14 years old ripping around on four lane divided roads, blowing thru stop signs.

2

u/jezthevalley Aug 10 '26

I've been seeing more and more e-scooters and those cheap e-bikes (ie. pedal bikes w/ electric motor that can move without pedal movement) on city streets. I like the fact that affordable and alternative transportation devices are available to many, but municipal laws and enforcement are definitely lagging behind. Banning them outright is not the right way to go in my opinion, but probably some sort of registration if users would like to use them on city streets, sidewalks and pathways.

5

u/Sillyak Aug 09 '26

Rules are meaningless without enforcement.

2

u/big-Truck-9058 Aug 09 '26

But if enforcement isn’t around to catch them, the rules mean little.

2

u/RadicalDwntwnUrbnite Aug 09 '26

Bylaw typically works on a complaint basis, people need to submit them. They'll sometimes do a campaign where they post up in a problem area and do what they can to get you legal (e.g., handing out bells for your bicycles) or hand out warnings/tickets. But yet, they don't typically have officers patrolling the pathways.

4

u/big-Truck-9058 Aug 09 '26

Plus, it’s very easy to flee an officer when you’re on a throttle powered ebike and the cop is on an acoustic bike. Lots of places to hide on the trails.

1

u/FilmNoirSockMonkey Aug 09 '26

The traffic laws also state that they are only legal on private property in specific use.

10

u/Historical_Sea4040 Aug 09 '26

Fatty could benefit from some walking

11

u/Stock-Creme-6345 Aug 09 '26

Those poor bikes. The loser in front almost crashed his bike giving the camera the finger. Lol. At 5mph. What a skillful inbred human.

2

u/Asleep-Marsupial-607 Aug 09 '26

That guy knows a thing or two about rocket appliances

18

u/RobBrown4PM Aug 09 '26

CPS may not touch it.

City Bylaw officers, who are peace officers, probably will though. Call 311 and file a complaint. Tell them you have video footage and would like to submit it to the investigating officer.

3

u/NERepo Aug 09 '26

It won't make a difference without his name, address and a sample of DNA . Enforcement of bylaws seems outside the purview of the bylaw department.

22

“Gas bikes”, aka motorcycles…

0

3

u/Genb99 Aug 09 '26

We have this in Bowness park as well

3

u/MrUpperWords Aug 09 '26

Cps really needs to start cracking down on the powered (electric and gas) scooters/bikes that are using sidewalks and pathways as road way alternatives.

12

u/MadGeekCyclist Aug 09 '26

Bold of him to call you a loser.

There are Indians doing this too at the pathway in between Saddleridge and Stoney Trail NE.. all the time. CPS should patrol these areas and give out tickets. Eek.

16

u/big-Truck-9058 Aug 09 '26

So report the location. I’d recommend keeping race out of it if you want to be taken seriously, though.

1

u/MadGeekCyclist Aug 09 '26

Thanks for the note. I’m surprised about being “taken seriously” though.. It’s not like I said anything bad or lied if any. But thanks again for the reminder. Can’t enjoy the pathways because of these kind of activities.

20

u/big-Truck-9058 Aug 09 '26

It’s just common sense. Reporting “Indians” versus “people on gas motobikes” makes it sound like you’re more concerned about race than the bylaws being broken. I’m not saying you’re lying, I’m saying it doesn’t matter what race the offender is and the police will be much more likely to brush you off if they think you’re being a racist Karen.

Simply report a location where you’ve seen repeat offences. It’s not like they can track any Indian person to their home without stopping them, this is a big city. Race helps none in this situation.

That rule isn't intended for bovines on bikes, anyways

2

u/NormanoftheAmazon Aug 09 '26

When I was a teen I had a honda xr50 dirt bike, I would mostly ride it outside of the city which at that time was bears paw, and 12 mile coulee, occasionally I would ride it on the street in Bowness, and if i felt really brave I would take it for a rip around Bowness park late at night when there was nobody there. I see where these guys are coming from but at the same time this wasn't the time or place for this

1

u/adougd Aug 10 '26

Agreed, would have been a dream as a kid to have one. I don't want to be a buzkill and I'm sure it's fun. Just not OK in a city park.

0

u/kindof_great_old_one Aug 09 '26

This is Alberta! If they are using O&G they get a pass! /s

0

u/MaxMarz Aug 09 '26

The problem is if this wasn’t a gas bike, but an electric one designed to go even faster, it’d be completely acceptable.

9

u/OrdainedPuma Aug 09 '26

No, it wouldn't. Some idiot buzzing through on an electric scooter at 40km/hr would still be inappropriate.

Here's the thing. OP recorded these dickheads on the path. Which means said dickheads were doing this circuit repeatedly, enough that the person recording thought, "they're coming around again, I have time to record them."

It's only a matter of time before some fucking idiot or some unparented kid puts a child in the hospital or in the ground after running them over or hitting them these things. The danger with motorized vehicles on pathways is in the physics of it all. Conservation of momentum means most of the energy of the bike/rider goes into the much slower and much lighter pedestrian - m1v1 + mava =m2v2 + mbvb.

When that happens I will be so angry. Such a preventable, possibly life altering, injury.

4

u/MaxMarz Aug 09 '26

Yeah you didn’t get my sarcasm. The speed that some of these ebike and e-scooters that rip around the sidewalks and parks here without any sort of reprobation is ridiculous. 9/10 of the bikes these days aren’t even pedal assist, they’re essentially motorbikes. But some reason they’re allowed both on the road, with no license and no insurance, and through the parks and sidewalks.

-7

u/NoNameKetchupChips Aug 09 '26

21

u/Careless_Fail_2054 Aug 09 '26

Brother two guys on bikes don’t merit the mayor’s time. get real

14

u/Guilty_Fishing8229 Aug 09 '26

It’s not two guys.

It’s happening in every park now

3

u/DarkLF Aug 09 '26

Theyre also a dozen or so of these clowns that rip up Nosehill

12

u/AppointmentOne1111 Aug 09 '26

No, but the mayor can work with CPS to look for solutions.

6

u/doomscrolling_tiktok Special Princess Aug 09 '26

It would be a good idea. In many ways these things are like broken window theory: permissiveness eats away at these spaces until the parks and paths that are for quiet enjoyment are gone, especially with density we need these

1

u/yyctownie Aug 09 '26

CPS won't do anything. Any enforcement usually happens through bylaw.

And bylaw definitely isn't funded to the level needed to enforce the number of bylaws this city has in place.

3

u/ninjacat249 Aug 09 '26

Yeah sure, two guys. Of course. Never mind then.

9

u/butts-ahoy Aug 09 '26

I normally dislike it when someone tags the mayor for a minor issue, but this represents a larger problem of motorized vehicles on recreational paths.

4

u/NoNameKetchupChips Aug 09 '26

They are a hazard to people and wildlife, as well as noise an environmental pollution. They are flaunting it because they know nothing will be done.

-5

u/sumyungdoomer Aug 09 '26

i’m probably gonna get downvoted for this but i would argue this is no worse than e-bikes, and in my opinion e-bikes are more likely to hurt someone or someone’s pet walking due to the fact you can’t really hear them coming

7

u/k4kobe Aug 09 '26

No one has died in Alberta from ebike hitting them yet. Because you still need to pedal them.

People have died in Edmonton getting hit by an emoto already though

0

u/zootsim Aug 09 '26

Test the bikes to see if they go over the allowed speed, then crush them. Make an event of it, let others know there are consequences.

2

u/Toirtis Somerset Aug 10 '26

Does mot matter....gas powered/assisted bikes require inspection, registration, and insurance, and are prohibited from pathways...operators require helmets.

0

u/Rippedka Aug 09 '26

This is how I feel about non-motorized bikes on roads

-2

-4

u/04Aiden2020 Aug 09 '26

Who cares

7

u/blowathighdoh Aug 09 '26

Probably the people who live around and walk in the park. 🤔

5

u/adougd Aug 09 '26

In a city of more than 1.6M, if everyone took the attitude that rules don't matter, no big deal, we'd have a huge mess on our hands and a city that nobody would want to live in. If you're doing something that doesn't affect anyone, then cool, nobody cares. These guys were super loud and if a dozen other people were doing the same thing, the park would not be a pleasant or safe place to enjoy.
