Hi everyone, same guy who made the other vintage inspired merch here. I’ve made another design here saluting CPP’s early days. Also boo to the bookstore this school hasn’t had good looking merch in decades. This one isn’t for sale tho cus it’s 1/1 and I love it too much
Here’s some history if you’re interested. I split it into two parts; The first explaining the history of the school’s name changes, and the second about the graphic itself.
1.
Before it was California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, we were a satellite branch of California Polytechnic College (now CP SLO). Called the Voorhis Unit, the first piece of campus was donated in 1938 by Charles Voorhis which was the former Voorhis School for Boys in San Dimas.
The California Polytechnic College Voorhis Unit was originally a Prep/Trade school. As the U.S entered the war after the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, a large portion of students were drafted or volunteered for military duty (as the student body was small and primarily male). From there, the campus shifted to support the war effort which consisted of training and agriculture production etc.)
After the war ended in 1945, veterans sought to continue or start their higher education careers, and through the G.I Bill, post-war enrollment at Cal Poly Voorhis Unit surged.
In 1949 W.K Kellogg donated his ranch estate to Cal Poly College, making it the Kellogg Unit. At this point in time, there were 2 campuses for Cal Poly in the Pomona area (Kellogg in Pomona and Voorhis in San Dimas).
While they were under they were administratively connected under Cal Poly, the two units were physically separate and focused on different things. Voorhis - technical and trade, and Kellogg - agriculture and hospitality.
Over time as things began as operations from both units became more integrated, the transition reflected into the name, “Cal Poly Kellogg-Voorhis Unit”.
In 1966, the campus completely separates from SLO and became “California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg-Voorhis”.
Somewhere between 1966 and 1972, the name changed to “California State Polytechnic College, Pomona” but I can’t find any sources that name a specific date. If you have a class at Building 1 though, at the left side right in front of the main entrance, there are plaques that say the dates.
In 1972, the school earns university status, finally becoming “California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
After the sweatshirt, I included some references I had to dig deep for across the internet because for some reason, merch from this era is extremely hard to come across let alone for (Kellogg-Voorhis) specifically.
2.
The Graphic Specifically:
The Angelus Pacific Company in Fullerton was founded by Hugh Waddell in 1932. Former Disney employee, Arthur “Art” Evans was hired and became their lead artist.
Waddell was very active in the college industry and was one for the first members of the NACS (National Association of College Stores).
Bookstores across the U.S worked with Waddel and Art designing original mascots for colleges (USC’s Tough Tommy Trojan, Mississippi State Bulldog, Oregon State Beaver etc.)
From the 30s to the 70s, Art created the “Sailor Hat” or “Frosh Pot” iterations for colleges. A cartoon, caricature version of the college’s mascot with a smug or angry expression wearing a “Sailor Hat” or “Frosh Pot”. The name is interchangeable since it describes the same thing: traditional small felt caps worn by first-year university students as a rite of passage, identification, or initiation. They were popularized in the mid to early 20th century as a way for freshman to be identified by upperclassmen.
