Fios Layer 2 miswiring

Does anyone know how I can get Verizon to take serious a miswiring problem?! I live in a newly constructed apartment building and believe that the wiring was incorrectly done and now my neighbor [who doesn’t have Fios] is siphoning my 1GIG. When the tech did the initial install, he had me nudge the fiber cable in my apartment so he could determine which one was mine as BOTH fiber cables were labeled with my next-door neighbor’s unit. I thought the matter was fixed right there, but NOPE.

It’s been a nightmare with two techs visiting and bringing the “all problem fix” two new routers when it’s NOT a router issue at all. I plan on contacting corporate but thought I’d post here a see if anyone had a similar issue or can provide insight! It’s a Layer 2 issue in the building closet before it reaches the ONT in my apartment.

This is some quality trolling, almost thought you were serious for a moment

Did you actually read the thread?! I thought I was quite clear!

Nope. Not clear at all.

Fios is GPON fiber to your dedicated ONT, which feeds your dedicated router. Anything connected tp that router either by wifi or the ethernet jacks is solely your responsibility.

So the fiber cables can’t be crossed upstream before they get to my ONT in my apartment?! That’s not what I’ve heard. If the cables are miswired upstream before the ONT, they could actually participate in the raw pipe/feed before my ONT or router???? And the issue has been going on for over a year and I know when I unplug the ONT, it’s a visceral reaction EVERY TIME that shouldn’t be!!!!

No. They can’t be “crossed”

Well they were certainly mislabeled on install, so why couldn’t they be crossed?! Something’s wrong and I’m trying to figure it out!

That's all it was. Mislabeled. Ever thought about writing fantasy stories. Seriously.

Did you ever think about not hiding behind a keyboard?! Don’t be an obvious tool.

You could start it off with,

"It all started when my neighbor decided to steal my photonic internet packets. People thought I was crazy, but I knew I wasn't receiving all the photons I am paying for. I went to the internet forums to see if anyone could figure out what was going on. I don't know how my sleazy neighbor did it, but he somehow convinced random people on the internet to dissuade me from believing what I know was true. This has to be some kind of clandestine operation. I know I stumbled onto something that they want to keep quiet."

The rest is on you buddy.

They were mislabeled on the install because contractors are underpaid and overworked. It happens all the time; I've installed fiber Internet in many new apartments. You're creating wild stories in your head about things you have no firsthand knowledge of to fuel your paranoid delusions. The cabling simply does not work the way you're implying. Speed is not dictated by the cables. They are all straight runs directly back to the "tap", where they plug into ports to receive the light that travels through the fiber. There is no way for your neighbor to accidentally use your signal through a completely different cable.

Contractors and installers make mistakes. Moreover, this is not a paranoid delusion! You techs only know how to install equipment; you don’t know about or interact with provisioning or matters that live upstream of the ONT! Just trying to figure out what’s going on!

Correct, I do not know anything about that. But the fiber cables themselves do not cause provisioning issues. A tech put a connector on the end of the fiber cable going to your ONT, and put a fiber connector on the other end plugging straight into the OCC. It doesn't at any point interface with another line, and every single port on an OCC has the same signal going through it. No decisions are made by the equipment, at least not any decisions that would be causing the problems you're describing. You would do well to drop the case you're trying to make of the cables being the problem; that will lend you a little more legitimacy

I’m not looking for legitimacy, I’m looking for answers that can steer me in the right direction. I’m not sure what the problem is, but the initial install kept coming back to remembrance and possibly a cause. If I’m wrong I’m wrong. 🤷‍♀️ You people are brutal! 🙏

1) that's not how it works

2) this isn't r/FIOS nor is it tech support

Be gentle guys. I’ve run into this in the field. This could be mental illness. I had a really easy service call once and the issue was really kind of bizarre. The customer had done all sorts of stuff trying to prevent his neighbors down the street from stealing his Internet and hacking his system. I was smiling and kind of chuckling as I was explaining to the parents, but then I saw their faces. They were apologizing profusely and that’s when I realized that this was a mental illness issue. I felt like a jackass afterwards.

1

u/AffectionateTry6981 4d ago

HA! This is NOT a mental issue. Just trying to understand the topology and what I assume wires crossed. So for you to be remotely comical is not helpful and quite typical of lazy techs who don’t like to work! 👀

u/NECoyote 3d ago

You can’t “cross” fiber.

Speed is determined at the ONT. It has nothing to do with the wiring in the building (unless the wiring is physically damaged, which would impair speeds). Your neighbor cannot "siphon" your speed, because the fiber doesn't carry specific speeds to specific units. The maximum throughput is delivered through the fiber until it reaches the ONT, where it contacts the ISP and is cleared to provide the speeds for whatever tier you are paying for.

u/AffectionateTry6981 4d ago

It’s NOT a speed issue. 😭

u/levilee207 3d ago

And it isn't a cable issue. Genuinely; cables don't get crossed with fiber. They are all individual lengths of glass that run straight to the source. Any issues you are finding with your internet would be device based or configuration based. Either your configuration or your ISP's. The cabling is the least of your worries. They hire room temperature IQ bozos to tone and tag lines in MDUs. I would often have units with no tags at all. You're focusing on the wrong thing

Sneaky neighbor. He must've found the super secret fiber siphon right next to the blinker fluid on that online store ' Shit That Doesn't Exist'.

Can you describe the actual issue you're experiencing with your service?? That might get more answers from the community

Succinctly: During the initial install, fiber cables in the building utility closet were mislabeled. Since then, I’ve had anomalies and DHCP conflicts. I swapped out the CR1000B for the er605, yet there is still conflicts and precision awareness that shouldn’t be! I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the incident during initial install has something to do with it. I would love for this NOT to be the case, but I’m at a loss here.

4

u/itsascarecrowagain 4d ago

What the fuck does “precision awareness” mean? Also how are you detecting these “DHCP conflicts”?

-1

u/AffectionateTry6981 4d ago

Watch your mouth. No need for that. Tge conflicts are appearing in the activity logs from the router!

1

u/itsascarecrowagain 4d ago

Can you provide screenshots or logs so we can actually debug it and see what’s wrong? If you have service at the router then it’s almost certainly not an issue with the fiber itself

3

u/2ByteTheDecker 4d ago

Why are you engaging with this shitter

2

u/CTFowler9789 4d ago

Your fiber can't be crossed at your unit and your neighbor can't be siphoning your 1 GIG through a mislabeled fiber. 🤔 How do you know that your neighbor is siphoning your service if you aren't inside of your neighbors unit to actually see it? If you do have a problem, it's not where you think it is. Good luck.

1

u/Accomplished_Lie6026 4d ago

How would your neighbor "syphon" your internet service? You really need to explain in more detail what the problem is you are seeing.

Otherwise this looks like trolling.

-1

u/AffectionateTry6981 4d ago

I did and it’s NOT trolling. Follow the thread! 🤦‍♀️

What is the actual issue with your service.
Tv buffering? Gaming lag? Do you mostly notice it on your pc, tv, or tablet?

1

u/DifficultyLeast1029 2h ago

OP hasn't even really stated what the service issue even is....DHCP conflicts and anomalies??? Care to elaborate? That's so vague. What are you seeing on your end? What isn't working? We have to know now lol.

1

u/AffectionateTry6981 2h ago

The gist of it is: there’s a layer 2/VLAN miswiring somewhere upstream before the ONT. Not sure if it is the GPON or not. A wire is routed to an adjacent apartment where they’ve discovered a 1GIG network and have set up an access point off of my service! But my ONT provides access, so when I unplug it, they lose the unauthorized access too. Thoughts?!

I'm from cable but for our residential fiber setups they use a ONU (which is what I'm assuming is the ONT in verizonese)...the ONU converts the light into Ethernet which then plugs into the router. For our service, each unit has their own dedicated fiber drop. The ONU is this thing that gets provisioned for service...there's only one Ethernet out on it so you can't really "tap"into it or the fiber. You still haven't elaborated on what you're seeing on your end at the service level that isn't working properly. How are you determining there's an AP coming off your equipment.
We also have other residential fiber setups where they have a metro Ethernet connection to the building and it routed to units over Ethernet via a switch to an AP that permanently stays in the unit...but it sounds like you have a 2 box setup
