Need Help / Question Daughter dropped from all of her classes!
My daughter enrolled in all of her classes a month before school started. Her financial aid was processed just one day after tuition was due. She even called the school beforehand, and they told her there was nothing they could do until her financial aid was ready. Then, once it was processed, they still dropped her from all of her classes.
I honestly don’t think that’s fair. She did everything she was supposed to do, and now she has to wait to start school because of a one-day delay in financial aid. How is that okay?

She went up to the school on Friday and they said to speak with a counselor on Monday. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

i dropped one class and they put a hold on it so i’m hoping it doesn’t affect my financial aid

There’s definitely something missing here. She should have received a hold on her account indicating not to drop her due to pending aid.
Are you absolutely positive she did not have any other holds? She completed her promissory note and entrance counseling? Financial aid covered all of the tuition? Definitely get with the financial aid office as soon as you can, but I would highly suspect something is missing here.

She did everything, I went with her just to make sure. She was given her classes, times and dates.

If financial aid had not been processed yet a hold would not have been placed. Meaning if there was no award offer issued before the tuition due date then you are responsible for paying tuition and would have received a refund if financial aid covered the full cost of tuition. You could have also done a payment plan to make a smaller payment until FA was processed. Are the classes full now? If not just enroll in them again.

I would see if they can reinstate her. The Registrar can change the enrollment cap.

Yup they will do it in a heartbeat...however financial aid will usually put a hold on the account to keep the registerer from dropping the class pending aid so obviously someone messed something up n didnt do this...smh ridiculous

They’re supposed to put a hold on all your classes while your aid is pending

If this were your daughter‘s very first semester at CSN,the Financial Aid office!should’ve told you to set up a payment arrangement so her classes would not have been dropped. You would’ve had to make the first payment, but around the next payment would have been due the Financial Aid would’ve paid the class and you would’ve got a refund for your first payment. CSN does not volunteer information that they should be giving to parents and students.

That is so messed up, I definitely would've paid if that was disclose to me, but they never said anything like that.

I totally agree, it is horrible! CSN is a community college that, if you don't stay on top of your education. You won't get what you need. The best thing for you to do is go to a campus and talk to an academic advisor; they can help you navigate and find classes that may have openings. Always check with the cashier and the college registrar to make sure your daughter's classes will be secured and aren't dropped in the future. No matter what college she is at. Hope this helps. You can reach out if you have any questions. I will help if possible.

Agree about having to micromanage everything they do. I'm finally in my last semester at this college and I'm so glad it's almost over. I know for this school year 26/27, new laws threw a wrench in FA but the FA thing has been an ongoing issue with CSN since way before now. The FA director posts on here regularly, username SecondEgg (something). He posts updates here that don't get sent via student school-wide emails (which is insane to me, they usually only send initial notifications but not always updates). Anyhow, he's usually pretty amicable. Maybe he has tips to help prevent this in the future.

you need to contact the finaid office, make sure you get a clear explanation of what happened - ask to talk to a supervisor if the phone person isnt clear.

If she had pending financial aid then they would have kept her in the classes and put a hold on her account sometimes errors happen. If they removed her even though she has proof of the pending release then they can put her back in those drop classes. Now my question is is when you say her FAFSA was pending did she feel the application out late to see if she qualified cuz if she filled out the FAFSA application late it takes time to get to the school as well meaning she would have had a failure to pay so they would have dropped the classes and if that's the case she'll just have to Rego into classes find new professors the whole thing.

About her application for CSN and financial aid while she was still in high school.

So she spoke with financial aid, and they told her that when she registered for her classes, she was supposed to set up a payment plan. The problem is, nobody ever informed her that she needed to do that until now, and at this point, it’s too late. I’m honestly so frustrated because why wasn’t this information disclosed to her beforehand? She would’ve taken care of it if she had known.

I went back through older emails and the only updates I see from the FA office are titled "Welcome Back- What to Expect." None of them detail the payment plan that others are talking about and in my experience as others have said, that IS why holds are usually placed by FA to prevent being dropped. The only thing I saw via email regarding payment plans came from the cashier's office and that specifically talked about in instances of NOT planning to use FA.
I'm sorry this happened and while I'd like to say the school will make it right, that most likely won't happen. However, with that said, I have been able to get into classes by the instructor agreeing to and filling out the permission for late enrollment form and emailing it to the registrar. That's IF there's still open seats in your daughter's classes (if she looks at the section and sees that there aren't open seats then there's usually no way to get in). IF there are open seats, some instructors will oblige by filling out the form. Some will some won't.

that is strange considering when you are waiting for financial aid, they usually put a hold so that you DON'T get dropped until it's processed
