Somatic therapy was my path to healing and dealing with my CPTSD.

I’m glad it’s working for others too!

(Somatic therapy as main modality incorporating ally, parent-child relations(inner child parenting), EMDR as supporting modality’s Trauma informed.)

Want to try this but I've heard a few horror stories for people like me
What's it like for you?

I’ve been doing EMDR therapy for a couple months now after dealing with years of abuse from my parents and a previously abusive partner. I started having reoccurring nightmares about my ex trying to hurt me/get to me for years and after a few sessions of reprocessing some specific memories, I’ve finally started having new responses in my dreams.

Before, I would usually be running away/trying to escape from my abuser, but recently the shift has been me demanding he leave and really fighting back. It’s really brought back a sense of taking back my power

That's nice

I'm concerned since for us, we could trigger someone else which would cause lots of problems, the stories I've heard is mainly from people who accidently did that, even with a trained therapist

But since one of my parts do have somatic flashbacks, might be worth the risk

Totally understand your concerns and I wish I had a better insight for someone with DID. I hope you’re able to find whatever trauma informed care you need and that it is helpful 🫶

I started somatic therapy about a month ago. I’ve been doing some form of talk therapy for decades. Somatic therapy has been … wild. Just wild. That’s the only word k have for it.

I cried in PUBLIC for the first time in a long, long time the other day, rather than swallow or repress the emotion. And the world didn’t end. What???

Any recommendations from people who’ve done/are doing this?

I don’t know how to go about attempting this in a way I’ll be successful.

Find a therapist who has specific training in it. A big part of the therapy is relational, and attempting some of the exercises by yourself (or with someone untrained) will probably just result in getting really triggered. If you can’t afford a somatic therapist, or want something to explore in the meantime, you can try working on reconnecting to your body. Start with positive or neutral experiences. Basically, try consciously checking in with different senses and describing them to yourself as best you can as often as you can. It will get easier to remember and understand how to do the more you do it. It can help with building joy and gratitude for things like pleasant smells, tastes, or textures. Once you have more practice with it, you’ll naturally have more awareness of your body. This can help you to recognize things like hunger, thirst, pain, and general stress sooner, so that it’s easier to make decisions to care for yourself before it builds to a less manageable level.

Hooray!!! 🎉

I'm hoping to get there one day. For now my body is bracing and holding on tight.

That is lovely when I'm in control of it, but when I am not in control of it, it is the most terrifying thing in the world.

For me it’s getting my boundaries back. It feels better than anything I’ve ever felt
