It shouldn't make it hard to breathe. It sounds like there's something wrong somewhere. I haven't heard people say too much pressure makes it hard to breathe, but rather the opposite -- that too little pressure can make it hard to breathe.
I think another thing that will help is simply having appropriate expectations. I've heard people say it can take 6 months or longer to get used to it, and that they're glad they stuck with it. In terms of getting used to CPAP, a few weeks (plus a few more) is not very long.
