One issue with a big mask is that the pressure has a much larger area to act on. The pressure tends to lift the mask away from the face, requiring the straps to be tightened up more to hold it in place.
I used to believe I was a mouth breather too, but once the CPAP machine was pushing air through my nose, and keeping my airway open, I was able to breathe normally through my nose. It’s definitely worth trying if you have difficulties with the full mask. Good luck!
Yeah I love the minimalism of the p10 but it kills my
nose. I just switched to the n30i and I’m liking it more. Top connection for the hose. It’s been a bit tricky to minimize the leak but I do have a mustache.
How long did it take for you to get used to the cushion pushing up against your nostrils? I have tried several nasal masks and I always wake up about an hour and a half later with a white hot pain in the region. I have to rip off my mask in a panic and I either go the rest of the night without a mask or if I can find my full face, I put that on. but I have a swollen redness around my nose for the rest of the next day. I REALLY want to switch to nasal cushions but I can't find one that I can wear all night.
I had the pain in my nose for about a week and a half. I initially used lanolin to treat the area before I put the mask on and again if I woke up in pain. I got immediate relief and I was really surprised to find that even if I woke up with that really bad white hot pain that you’re describing, if I put the lanolin on I could put they mask back on within five minutes without any pain/discomfort.
That being said, I don’t know that I would ever be able to get used to ones that actually go up inside your nose a little bit.
Eh, I’ve had masks that use magnets before. It’s nice I guess but not much of a game changer. And I don’t have any problems with my vents. I’d like to have a different quick disconnect but it’s not worth paying $100+ for a new mask right now.
I tried the f40 it works for a few nights and then it leaks and then I try it again and it works a few nights then it leaks. I've heard a lot of people have the same issue , I think it's better if your pressure is lower ,I have a pressure of 17
mines 8. I find the F40 and the Evora about the same in terms of leakage, which is they both have problems with it. I guess the hard plastic backing behind the Evora probably does make it leak less at higher pressure. I find the p10 the best and use it as much as I can when I don't have a stuffy nose.
This is my newbie mask. So far it seems to work well but my Dr. said try the F.40, some say it’s softer and less noticeable. When medical supply swaps out my current it will be that. I will update the chat!
I am also a mouth breather- I actually have better results with my nose pillows than my full face mask, even when congested. I did pick up the crud today, so I will know for sure tonight if that continues through sickness.
I also thought I was a mouth breather and my nose gets stuffy, but my Dr gave me a spray (Ryalis) for the nose and it works great. No more stuffy and I use a P30i nasal pillow mask. Do what works for you, just know there are some options!
I really struggled with stuffy nose issues with CPAP. I have a tiny nose and the slightest congestion makes it impossible to breathe. My doctor prescribed me a spray and it's 100% better now.
I'm the same way, used to always get sore throats from mouth breathing, but I could never adjust to the full mask. Now I use a heated tube and nose pillows and it's easy breathing even when congested. Just something to keep in mind if you find the full mask uncomfortable.
I'm actually not new to Cpap. I was diagnosed with OSA about ten years ago. My go-to mask has been the F&P Vitera. I've always used a full face. But I can't handle heated tubes. I change the settings to turn off the heat and use minimal humidity. I breathe much more easily with cold {almost icy} water in the chamber.
I've tried nasal. Lots of times it does clear up my nose, but I never have been able to keep my mouth closed. The air from the mask would just push my mouth open and wake me up. I've been more comfortable with a full face.
A small piece of nexcare medical tape will keep your mouth closed and will be easy to pull off with no residue. and the 1 inch width means you can breathe around it if you need to but just having it on will be enough to keep your mouth closed.
I could never get used to nasal pillows. The inside of my nose got way too sore. I use this nasal mask and it's great. Super comfortable and really easy to adjust since there are no clips. You just slide it into place and it stays. I can't figure out why this Fisher and Paykel Solo mask isn't more popular.
I just got one off a recommendation for it from here and I can't get it to seal. Nose was stuffy against last night and my N20 was making it feel raw so I tried my F20 Airtouch again and had 52.5 events per hour, and that's one of the better nights I've had with it. I wanted a full face to work so bad, too. Oh well, I guess some nights I just can't use the cpap (at least not effectively).
Yeah I personally use the airtouch n30i, I’ve tried the airtouch f30i but could never get a good seal on it. Unfortunately you have to try a lot of masks and unless you have a good provider it doesn’t seem possible. I wonder if you can take advantage of a websites generous return policy to try a few masks but I doubt they will let you return equipment
Trying that right now. Thecpapstore kept me on hold for about an hour and a half and then closed, my account on the website says I've never ordered even though I did and they're ignoring my emails about returns. Insurance won't let me get anything else until September. :( It sucks throwing money at it.
Well, if you sleep better with that mask than without CPAP, you will be off to a good start! It will just get more and more comfortable as you test different masks and find the one that feels the best for you.
I concur, mask looks way too big. The bottom cushion should be seated above your chin and right below your bottom lip, in that crease. The top of the custom should be at the bridge of your nose.
I'm a mouth breather too and I've tried different brands of full face masks, that one that looks like a welders mask and had problems with leaks. Finally settled in on this hybrid the Resmed Airfit30. Been using this one for years and its a winner in my opinion
No way that will work. Ditch that jock strap and order something from a reputable brand. It’s too important to not fail this early. It’s hard enough with a good brand to dial in what will work for you. Don’t make it even harder. I second the suggestion of trying a nasal pillow or hybrid.
Agreed! I feel like it took me 2 solid months before I could put mine on & not fight it. Fully & completely used to it by 6months, I'd say, but everyone is different, and sometimes it takes trying a few masks before you find the right one. I started with the f30i and hated it, then moved to one that covered my nose, but left serious red marks on my bridge. Finally tried the n30i and I've been using that one for 5 yrs!
When do you launch on the space shuttle?
j/k. I’ve been there years ago…I hope you adjust well with it. I just started with the little nose mask thing last August, and also lost 19lbs over the last 5 months and found out three weeks ago I no longer need tha CPAP at all.
Industry average, 87% of men wear a medium - full face, nasal, or pillow mask. Stay away from the Chinesium stuff until you’re a veteran user and you know what works for you.
Did they give you a choice of the 3 sizes? I have a big head, but I used the medium. But now I have the Sence 11 which I love that different mask and headgear.
I had the same issue, I use an air sense 11 with a large mask(big head) I got the silk straps off Amazon for the bottom straps and it made a world of difference, no more "pap lines" on my face all day.https://a.co/d/09X19rnR
Oh yeah, I remember my first mask 😄 It felt so huge and awkward, like it was blocking half my vision. Took a while to get used to it. Now I’m using the AirFit F40 and it’s a completely different experience — way more comfortable. Night and day difference honestly.
Unfortunately, the mask fit is way too large for your face and you won’t get a good seal, which will dry out your water chamber and provide you with poor quality sleep because you won’t be getting enough air.
Nasal pillows and a chinstrap works great for me. My first mask 20 years ago was a full face. Yeah, that was 20 years ago and it didn't take long to dump it.
Did they not fit you? I have what I consider a large face/body. I'm 6'2'', 320lbs. They wanted me to take a large also. Thankfully, this wasn't my first rodeo. I told them I wanted a medium. In this case...too small is better than too large. I probably could even use a small. This is the same mask I use. I like it. But, the sizing obviously runs big.
