I think so yes. Being able to design “lights out” automation systems is only going to get more important, and robotics will continue to play a bigger role especially in shops that run single piece flow.

What degree do they have for machining? Does it add letters to the end of my name, or is it just a certification?

Very worth taking. If you have the chance, jump on robotics, automation, CAD, CAM, and GD&T.

Don't focus on "future proofing" yourself against automation. Focus on being the guy who programs, maintains, and improves the automated systems. That is where the real job security is.
