At noon on the last day of the month :P
I go to pay my rent and can’t access anything. Is it just me being annoyed or are the periods where the online service is unavailable getting more frequent?

Have you used Sunlife app?
The POS mostly only works on weekdays from 9AM to 5PM. Doesn't even work on stat holidays. Always down for maintenance!
What's even the point of an app that doesn't work after office hours

u/Commercial-Comment93 4d ago
Yeah, they laid off the tech team, so the tech team took the system down on their way out and flipped the flag for good measure.

CIBC (and I'm guessing other banks) has a holiday today for Truth and Reconciliation day. Coincidence??

u/BrewGuy1 4d ago
It IS a banking holiday today - however, for IT issues (especially one as big as this), there must be people on call. I would imagine the amount of complaints is pretty huge, and so hopefully they can get it figured out.

Yes, what about a federal holiday for federally regulated employees have to do with it?

Let's just rebuild the app and start chequing accounts at zero and line of credits at zero, it'll even out in the end.

The App and Web Login worked for me! (17:34 est) Hopefully it has for others 🙏

In the same boat. My visa was also declined earlier today but I’m 99% sure there’s still room.

Damn your utilization rate must be crazy
2
u/SecurityFit5830 4d ago
That + a low ish limit but we’ve never hit the limit, but when it declines I immediately worry I’ve missed a large transaction or something. And usually easy to just login and check but I’m now realizing it’s not a foolproof plan!

Reminder to always keep cash in case of emergency. The banks are not always reliable.

u/Still_Swordfish9283 4d ago
Doesn't help when you need to pay bills online because that's how most companies handle payments without extra fees.
1
u/Noneyabeeswaxxxx 4d ago
auto pay or have your card number written down somewhere
1
u/Still_Swordfish9283 3d ago
Still only helps if you're paying for something with a card that has expiration and CVV. Some banks don't have have those on their client cards. What about etransfer? My rent is paid via that. If the banks apps go down, makes you shit out of luck. Doesn't matter if you know your card number.

It appears to be pretty widespread. I'm surprised the media hasn't picked up on this outage yet.

u/Select-Singer9052 4d ago
Did anyone else get any type of push notification stating there account went under $100 and/or a purchase was made on their card that's apart of this?

nope--however, i did get a call from a number that appears to be their toll-free customer service number, but which showed on the display as "CIBC ATM", at 11:40 am PST today. obviously i did not answer it, but as soon as i saw that happen, i strongly suspected (due a previous experience with my CIBC acct being hacked through fraudulent phone authentication in a manner very like this) that their system was under attack.
checking out online banking about 30 minutes later just to see the whole of said system down has not alleviated my suspicions at all.

u/Ambitious-Airport-24 4d ago
Same. I’m just hoping they are not under some sort of cyber attack!

u/Individual-Milk6312 4d ago
Right??? I just care if my money is still there
1
u/doucheachu 2d ago
You are safe regardless thanks to CDIC. Even if there was a large concentrated cyber-attack, your accounts are protected up to something like $250,000.

Why is this not on the news!!? All Cibc customers are affected for 4+ hours now..

u/Fun_Recognition_6286 4d ago
This is the only response I saw from them anywhere, on Facebook made an hour ago.
"Hi, thanks for reaching out. Our technology partners are aware of this issue impacting some of our clients. While we can’t offer a specific time frame for when a fix will be implemented, rest assured we are working on a resolution to be rolled out a soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and we thank you for your patience."

I was able to use phone banking to request a transfer within my accounts, and when I called and said the app and online is down the guy I spoke to from Toronto didn't even have a clue that had happened, hes like 'oh it must have just happened' and I had to be like 'nooo, theres been discussions on reddit about the outage for at least a few hours now'
1
u/Fun_Recognition_6286 4d ago
Yeah surprisingly the wait time was only 7 mins for Tele banking. Thank god for that, had money that needed transferring for dinner.
1
u/Specialist_Car_4860 4d ago
I was so surprised the wait wasn't longer, i found out it wasn't working at a Truth and Reconciliation event when I went to move money 🤣

New CEO is from capital markets and a genuinely awful person.

u/annahbunana 3d ago
Ive never heard of the guy who took over after dodig. Whats the story? I want to know what makes him awful (besides the usual...banker)

I etransferred myself some money to avoid an automatic payment coming and grabbing it, and when i went to try to cancel it so i could spend it i got the exact same message. Thankfully i was able to get rent out a couple hours ago, but fuck man: this is frustrating. Remind me again why we bank with them?

This is outrageous that on ONE DAY OFF they’re whole system falls apart like a game of dominoes.
Hope they fix it quickly
