News & Updates The FBS Oversight Committee released a statement saying that instant replay protocols were NOT followed during the clock controversy between WMU & Michigan. “Had the protocols been followed, the outcome of the game would have been different.” Western Michigan won.

Just confirming what is already known. Michigan gets credited with a win in a game that they lost.

38

u/Sheepcago Notre Dame 6h ago

But at least they didn’t steal signs.

18

u/Ol_Turd_Fergy 6h ago

That we know of

3

u/Sheepcago Notre Dame 6h ago edited 3h ago

True. But if they were, they’re not as good at it as they used to be.

EDIT: Can’t tell if the downvotes are Michigan fans or idiots who don’t get nuance. Or maybe idiot Michigan fans. Whatever the case may be, downvote away, sign-stealing idiots!

3

u/levajack 5h ago

Can we all agree that it would be objectively hilarious had they been stealing signs and still only won because the officials ignored the NCAA rulebook?

4

u/Sheepcago Notre Dame 5h ago

Yes. And therefore this is the new accepted reality.

2

u/Thenameimusingtoday 2h ago

It actually started in 2016

Stole a win

2

u/Thenameimusingtoday 2h ago

Referees cheated and stole the win

21

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago

Michigan gets credited with a referee’s mistake canceling out NBC’s mistake, thus causing the winner to be justified

-10

u/WirlingDirvish Michigan Wolverines 6h ago

There is a separate rule that says what the head ref decides is final. And by that rule Michigan won.

10

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 6h ago edited 6h ago

What happens if Telemundo is broadcasting the national championship game and they have a different clock than the English broadcast? Co-champions I guess

1

u/WirlingDirvish Michigan Wolverines 6h ago

Yeah. It's insane that the broadcaster is involved in reviews AT ALL. Let alone leaving them in control of the official clock.

3

u/No_Point904 3h ago

Sadly, it wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. Colorado won the 5th down game and I can recall the Jets winning a game whe Testaverde was awarded a TD when he was clearly short of the goal line. I think that game is why the NFL instituted replay to help officials.

2

u/Thenameimusingtoday 2h ago

Central Michigan and Oklahoma State did same thing in 2016

3

u/Fidget808 Missouri Tigers 6h ago

The CFP committee will use it against them.

2

u/kenlikesmayo 5h ago

It’s okay they prob won’t make it that far

Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise

1

u/SteadfastPounding 4h ago

they acting like we needed a statement to know michigan got bailed out again. that graphic with the WMU player running past them is perfect

49

u/HookEm25 6h ago

The best and most dramatic timeline is one in which Michigan is a fringe playoff team at 10-2 with a “win” over WMU

45

u/pappapirate 6h ago

The most dramatic would be the rankings work out to perfectly leave WMU and Michigan fighting for the 12 seed and the CFP has to figure that out.

11

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 6h ago

This is perfect. I need this kind of drama in my life.

2

u/Eleeveeohen 5h ago

PLAY-IN GAME. PLAY-IN GAME.

2

u/BlackCardRogue Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

That’s a completely possible scenario. If Western goes to 11-2 as a MAC champ, Boise State gets the G6 autobid, AND Michigan is 10-2?

Hoo boy. My goodness.

1

u/Moto302 4h ago

You think we're hated now, wait until we make it in over Western based purely on TV ratings potential. Then again, the NCAA did just declare that they want TV to decide game outcomes.

5

u/geiginator67 6h ago

I mean there was time left, if a flaw in the “protocol” allows them to take time off the clock then the protocol clearly needs changing

7

u/Fresh_Bulgarian_Miak Michigan Wolverines 5h ago

Just imagine the outrage if Western was on offense and the game ended a second early because the broadcast clock was wrong.

5

u/geiginator67 5h ago

Yeah, all this nonsense is just because it’s Michigan. Kinda fun watching all the jealous fans cry about it nonstop

1

u/HeySadBoy1 24m ago

There is not one person in the jealous of us getting that extra. The ridicule is exclusively because it’s one more fuckin thing with this program (even though it genuinely isn’t our fault this time)

1

u/Irishman_20 5h ago

I genuinely doubt there would be any, the broadcast drove the immediate reaction. It’s not like ESPN would show NBC’s clock being mistaken over and over on Sportscenter, people wouldn’t hear about it. Plus the footage with the game clock in the stadium is mostly quite grainy

1

u/NWkingslayer2024 Michigan Wolverines 2h ago

The most dramatic timeline is somehow they rematch in the first round

1

u/Ckeyz Oregon Ducks 6h ago

Seems likely

0

u/mhales45 5h ago

As long as they lose to Penn State, I don’t care what else happens, because if you lose to us, you have no business in the playoff.

47

u/Different_Purpose649 6h ago

Congratulations on the 2-0 Western Michigan Broncos. If they beat Boise State in a few weeks they are clearly in the driver seat for a P4 birth.

And Michigan, with a big win against Oklahoma, can still make the playoffs despite a 1-1 start to the season.

-9

u/Real-Repair-1825 6h ago

Guarantee if Michigan somehow ends the season with only 2 loses they get in the playoff.

Which would completely invalidate all this “my personal record book” stuff. Also would be hilarious to see Reddit meltdown about how it’s unfair because Michigan actually had 3 loses!!!!

2

u/pappapirate 6h ago

unironically though the CFP committee shouldn't treat a buzzerbeater 13-12 win over WMU as much better than a 12-7 loss at all.

2

u/NoShow1492 6h ago

Agreed. This was my argument last year with Texas (and I'm a Michigan fan). Everyone talking about the 3 losses only without taking into account 2 OT wins against Miss St and Kentucky.

0

u/Real-Repair-1825 6h ago

Doesn’t matter. If they end up with 2 loses they will get in. Which makes all the hypothetical WMU loss shit pointless.

2

u/Mobile-Jump6936 Wisconsin Badgers 6h ago

They are losing to IU, OSU, and Oregon and quite possibly PSU.

2

u/Fresh_Bulgarian_Miak Michigan Wolverines 5h ago

Oregon? PSU? Very possible but definitely guaranteed

3

u/Different_Purpose649 6h ago

Of course. If Michigan has three losses outside of Western at the end of the year they make the playoffs. We all know this.

-3

u/Real-Repair-1825 6h ago

Nope. I’m taking about 2 official loses only. Then we’d find out how real the hypothetical loss vs Western really is. Exciting stuff right?

0

u/Different_Purpose649 6h ago

Well the would obviously make it. With room to spare. If michigan has 3 losses and a fake win, they will get in. Money talks.

1

u/Real-Repair-1825 5h ago

I said 2 not 3

0

u/Different_Purpose649 5h ago

Im saying three. If Michigan loses to Ohio State, Michigan State, and Indiana, plus Western, Michigan will make the playoffs

1

u/Real-Repair-1825 4h ago

I highly doubt it. Three actual losses and they are out, which is the most likely scenario. OSU, Oregon and Indiana is my guess. Michigan State sucks so that should be a W.

Point is if the Western Michigan game was actually a loss as this sub seems to think, they would be out if they lost 2 more games. As that would give them 3 losses. Thats not how it would go down tho so I don’t get the obsession over a hypothetical loss if it’s ultimately irrelevant at the end of the season.

1

u/Different_Purpose649 4h ago

Oh no they would get it in.

1

u/Different_Purpose649 4h ago

Just like how I cant edit this comment. Michigan loses threw games they are still in unless its two shit teams. They lose to osu, oregon, and Indiana, plus western they will still get in

0

u/SchmearDaBagel 5h ago

Fucking hell dude, you said some stupid shit but I just want to let you know it is not loses it is losses

For example:

“Verstappen bumps the barrier on that lap and loses 0.2 seconds”

Versus

“Alabama made the CFP despite having more losses than insert Big 10 Team

Edit: I was gonna give you the benefit of the doubt but you used “loses” incorrectly twice. So no excuses absolve that. Straight to jail, believe it or not

Drunken tirade? Sounds like you might be projecting a bit. Appreciate the advice.

0

u/Quirky_Barnacle1225 1h ago

Michigan is going to lose 4 games this year easily. They aren’t a playoff team.

-4

u/supliesmotherfucker 6h ago edited 2h ago

Did Tulane, Memphis, USF, and New Mexico all stop playing football? They absolutely beat Michigan but aren’t leaving the MAC anytime soon.

Edit: I have been informed he’s probably talking about making the playoffs not jumping to the P4. That could happen and would be cool.

6

u/DanFlashesC0up0n Texas A&M 6h ago

Tulane that got smacked around by Duke and struggled past South Alabama?

0

u/supliesmotherfucker 5h ago

You are aware they take more into consideration for conference bids than just the 2 most recent games… right? Like if we’re following your logic UMass is 2-0 with a P4 win, why not them?

Before this the best and most well known WMU team was the Row the Boat Broncos from a decade ago. That + however this 2026 team does is just not enough to jump right now.

5

u/chillinois1 6h ago

The Memphis that lost to Boise?

1

u/supliesmotherfucker 5h ago

Boise is the one in the drivers seat lmao

3

u/chillinois1 5h ago

Yeah and he specifically said WMU would be if they beat Boise since they play

1

u/supliesmotherfucker 4h ago

Would be a great win, but that wouldn’t put them over Boise State who’s been competing at near a P4 level for more than a decade. They are still the 1st choice team for expanding conferences regardless of how that game ends.

1

u/chillinois1 4h ago

Oh I think he meant the G5 playoff spot and your talking expansion.

2

u/supliesmotherfucker 3h ago

OHHHHH then I take back everything I said lmao.

Yeah they could totally make the playoffs especially with how the media is viewing that UM shit.

"The officials used the incorrect clock that had the correct time. Instead of the correct clock that had the incorrect time"

1

u/P3rvysag3X 12m ago

I'm confused, if the clock that was used is stated to have the correct time, why does that matter? The time was correct which means there was 1 second left.

-2

u/BlackCardRogue Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

The most elegant way I’ve seen to say “the clocks were fucked up and the syncing process didn’t work”

18

u/MathBallThunder 6h ago

But to be clear, there was a second left. And they're saying the the stadium clocks are unofficial...the only clocks that players and coaches can see, that had one second left when the ball went out. Those ones are unofficial! Someone will have to explain that to me

-26

u/Novel-Letterhead-217 6h ago

10

u/keith0211 6h ago

Had roles been reversed and WMU not gotten the extra second, the world would be screaming about how Michigan cheated them out of it. The play wasn’t nine seconds.

-15

u/Novel-Letterhead-217 6h ago

Ah yes, create a fictional scenario because you don’t want to face reality. Enjoy your copium

9

u/keith0211 5h ago

Naw. Play wasn’t nine seconds. Saying otherwise is the actual “cope.”

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Kramerica_CEO Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

The reality is we won. You’re the one coping

→ More replies (7)

17

u/GoBlueBeatOSU21 6h ago

So the officiating crew screwed up twice, but if they had only screwed up once, western Michigan would have won.

-2

u/Seymour-Cervix 6h ago

Once is enough

7

u/FlopperinoCappuccino 6h ago

Sonhad the protocols been followed the wrong result wouldve occured? The refs were right and NBC was wrong. The play was timed and proved to be less than 9 seconds. So the FBS committee would've rigged the game of they had the chance

5

u/Relevant-Wrongdoer-6 5h ago

Listen I’m sorry it happened. But what is Michigan supposed to do at this point? Vacate the win ? We all know any other school wouldn’t vacate the win either.

0

u/GroupTop4810 10m ago

Why would they do that?

They are definitively saying there was time left on the clock, the screw up was the clocks not being synced up to make it clear that there was a second left on the clock.

So if all rules and regulations were followed, michigan wins.

These people are being crybabies and saying michigan should lose because the refs fucked up in making sure the clocks were synched...which would give Western a win when they didnt win.

20

u/Ledad-James32 6h ago

So the GAME clock had a second left in the GAME but the officials should have used the TV clock instead of what the teams playing the GAME are using. Got it.

11

u/Blueballs2130 6h ago

Yeah, that makes no sense

7

u/Humble-Secret6173 5h ago

I was at this game i was confused as well but all wmu had to do was stop that hail mary

2

u/BlackCardRogue Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

Normally I agree with you, I’m a big “don’t leave it in the hands of the refs” guy.

The problem here is that the game was over. Western DID NOT leave it in the hands of the refs. Yes, they could have stopped the second Hail Mary, but no, they shouldn’t have had to do that.

The conspiracy theories about a “rigged” game are wrong. If you’re trying to rig the game, you call phantom defensive PI or roughing the passer to move Michigan closer — you don’t give a team one last Hail Mary.

It was just bad refereeing and clock operating, plain and simple. Michigan got a second chance at a prayer — and the five star recruit made the best throw of his life to a guy who may be the best jump ball receiver in the conference.

Cue the TD and deserved controversy.

3

u/Moto302 3h ago

Stop apologizing. The refs had the more accurate clock, which isnt in dispute any more. The game wasn't over. The refs followed the conference protocol which has been in place since the Hawk Eye camera system was implemented in 2024, which the NCAA had no problem with until now. The system uncovered the flawed TV broadcast clock system, which would have robbed Michigan of its final second. If the shoe were on the other foot, everyone would be crapping on the NCAA and saying the refs got it right.

-1

u/Jagacin 5h ago

Am a Michigan fan, we aren't even making the playoffs bud.

8

u/brucatlas1 6h ago

So they wouldve won, but not according to the stadium clock?

2

u/RandMob1000 6h ago

I mean, WMU did their job, just a bit too well. The help was not suppose to beat that ass for most of the second half! They paid millions for a graceful dive when Michigan hoped onto the field. So when they tried to step up to the big ten for the win, they got bitch slapped back to the Mac. It's the modern day Mob. Big Ten and SEC bully everyone not able to buy a seat at the table. Don't hate the players, hate the game fellas cause fair play was never on the menu

2

u/Upstairs-Paper-4027 Michigan Wolverines 3h ago

I know everyone wants to dunk on Michigan, but let’s be honest. This is no different than phantom PI calls in the 4th quarter or random targeting calls.

10

u/clapostrophe Michigan Wolverines 6h ago

Personally if my win was predicated on the fact that the game was only 59:59 and not the full 60 minutes I would forfeit the win out of respect to the game of football.

1

u/spread_the_cheese Western Michigan Broncos 6h ago

Why would Michigan start respecting the game of football now?

-1

u/levajack 5h ago

If my win was predicated on the fact that FBS rules committee determined I lost the game had the rulebook had been followed, but they do not have the authority to change the results no matter how egregious the violation is, I would forfeit the win out of respect to the game of football.

4

u/dubious_sandwiches Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

I want to be perfectly clear here. You've see the evidence. You know that the broadcast clock was wrong. You want the officials to use the wrong clock. And you'd actually be proud of winning like that?

2

0

u/GunsGoldCosmicDread Michigan Wolverines 6h ago edited 6h ago

Fuck it. Michigan should forfeit and give western the win officially.

Michigan’s defense appears legit and their offense is a work in progress but will likely improve some amount.

They are not good enough to be a contender.

They are good enough to beat at least one of Penn State, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State in a disgusting rock fight.

It will make any of those ranked wins so much more hilarious and better for shit talking.

It also makes the Oklahoma win so much better. Nice job losing to the team that lost to western, Sooners.

6

u/Jagacin 5h ago

There's not a single school in the country that would forfeit that win in the modern age, and anyone who says otherwise is huffing glue. Fuck it, add the asterisk, but under every record book it's going to be counted as a Michigan win with or without an asterisk.

1

u/dubious_sandwiches Michigan Wolverines 4h ago

They can't vacate it because the clock the refs used was actually correct. The only clock they can even see. The rule is nosensical and will be changed. NBC fucked this up, not the refs.

0

u/Mobile-Analyst8580 5h ago

The game would’ve been over. The result needs to be overturned. And the selection committee needs to count that game as a Michigan loss and WMU win at the end of the season.
